Are Jason Statham and Tom Hardy in contention to play Snake Plisskin in the Escape From New York remake?

Mar. 26, 2013by: Paul Shirey

A while back there was talk of an ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake involving Gerard Butler, who would take on the role of Snake Plisskin, made famous by the gravely-voiced Kurt Russell in John Carpenter's 1981 classic. That quickly went away when New Line lost the rights, but now that Joel Silver has them in his mitts, the reboot train is about to leave the station and according to NY Daily News, there are already two stars in line to take on the eye-patch mantle; Jason Statham and Tom Hardy.

As a big fan of the original (and a moderate fan of the lackluster sequel), I'm not really excited about either choice, but if I had to pick one it would have to be Hardy. He's still new enough not to bring a stigma with him, whereas Statham is just too...Statham. I like the guy, but I'd rather he not come in and make a mess of such an iconic character. NY Daily New's source had this to say about Statham:

Jason is the type of actor who has the physical attributes and screen presence to reprise Snake. He has a proven track record as a leading man and would do a great job.

Hardy has proven a bit more range as well, given his work in WARRIOR, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, and LAWLESS (I still haven't seen BRONSON...I know, I know), while Statham has shown that he can beat a bunch of guys up at once. The inside source had a similar perspective, saying:

Tom was immense in The Dark Knight Rises and deserves to get a break in a top role. This could put him firmly in the A-list"

I don't know how the role of Snake Plisskin puts you in the A-list. He's an awesome character and one of my favorites, but he was always a cult B-list hero. It's not a career-making role in my opinion. Hardy is also starring in this year's MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, which is essentially an Australian Snake Plisskin, so I'm not sure taking on the American version will really do him any favors. However, the film is on the fast track, according to the source, which states:

Studio Canal wants to make sure they get one of the two men before the summer."

The whole thing just feels unnecessary, but if they're going to do it, I hope they can pull it together and make something fresh, while remaining true to the original concept. Otherwise, this will just go down as another failure to launch. A director could make or break this one, too, but don't expect a big name to tackle a reboot of an '80's cult actioner.

Extra Tidbit: All right, gang, you know the drill. Who should be Snake Plisskin? I vote for Kurt Russell in a sequel, rather than a reboot. Too old my ass.

Another movie that should NOT be remade. Russell was the perfect Plissken.

Didn't they just remake this it was called Lockout. That should've been a sequel. They should do what they're doing with Mad Max.

Obviously Russell is the best choice. If not him, Thomas Jane. He's american, and can pull off that down-on-his-luck, antihero persona pretty well. He's the best choice if you want to capture the spirit of the original character. If you cast Hardy or Statham, they might as well not call the character Snake (although I like both those actors).

I like both....

...but not as Plissken. I'd rather see Olyphant in the role.
Tom Jane can do anything and after Silver screwed him in Bullet To The Head it would be appropiate for him to throw this TJ's way. But from what I hear this is a Origin story, and Jane may be too old to play this part in that way. Same for James Purefoy, who I think would totally kill in this role.

But I think my vote for a Origin of Snake Plissken may go to Jason Momoa. Maybe he's too tall?
Edgar Ramirez?
Vin Diesel would

Vin Diesel would have been great in this role 10 years ago but now he's too Vin Diesel. Just like Statham.

if it's gotta be made and its gotta be one of these two, my vote goes to Hardy all the way. Statham has basically played the same role in his last half dozen actions movies. I'd love to see someone like Joel Edgerton or Frank Grillo in the role.

WOW, I thought Bale's Batman voice was campy - listening to Kurt talk as Snake is pretty funny.

If it has to be any one of those choices, definitely Tom Hardy...but I would prefer Kurt Russell returning to close out the trilogy....and make up for Escape from L.A.

NEITHER

I like both guys and I am open to an Escape reboot. I love Carpenter but I actually think Escape starts great but drags a bit. A reboot could be cool. It is important to remember that Russell was a controversial choice who had done mostly Disney work. Both actors are capable, but I would like to see someone who can really nail it with an American accent and anti-hero vibe. Karl Urban owned in DREDD. Thomas Jane could be cool too. I'd love to see someone like Neil Marshall direct.

My vote goes to... VIN DIESEL, if you think about it, his Riddick character is quite similar to Snake.

Badass with an attitude an a sparkle of humor

my choice

is obviously not to remake the movie at all. but if i had to choose between the two, tom hardy all the way. statham is decent but i can't see him carrying this picture. hardy has a lot more depth. kurt russell kicked ass with his attitude in the original as well, not just his physicality.

So because these guys are popular Hollywood wants them to play every action hero of the past? Hardy is already doing Mad Max (and I give this film some slack because it is truly a reboot, a la James Bond, not a remake). But whatever, I'll never watch a remake of Escape From New York, I don't care how slick they polish it or how hip they make the trailer. Not even good reviews would get me to watch it.

Gerard butler actually is the second best choice

the first being Kurt 'plissken'Russel.

Same here as with max, most people would love to see an older max and plissken movie.

He! Max & Plissken actually sounds good for a buddy movie.

I'd like to see someone more outside the box. For example Josh Holloway would be the perfect choice for something like this. He's charismatic, badass, and I could easily see him don the eyepatch.

I could also see Gerard Butler, Timothy Olyphant, or Thomas Jane. But having Kurt Russell back again would be the best choice.

Thanks for reminding me there's a new Mad Max film - and Mel Gibson isn't in it (seriously, how badass would it be to have seen an old, grizzled Max?!). Story aside, Escape From New York is awesome because of: Donald Pleasence (dead), Ernest Borgnine (dead), Isaac Hayes (dead), Lee m-fkng Van Cleef (dead), Harry Dean Stanton (looking a bit peaky) and KURT RUSSELL (still alive, Hollywood!). In other words, fuck this remake.

UNNECESSARY

Don't bother casting this...it'll be a shitty remake, like they all are, and ruin the reputation of the original.

Snake/Max

You can't have the same guy play Mad Max and Snake Plissken! That's like hiring the same guy to make Star Trek and Star Wars!

Love Hardy and he would be great in the role. If he were to take it, then digitally replace him in Fury Road with the REAL Max. In fact, digitally replace him with the real Max anyway. I love Statham too, but I have the same problem with him being cast in this as I did with him being cast as Parker. Statham plays Statham, nothing more. I love Statham as Statham, but

My casting: Viggo Mortenson as Snake, William H. Macy as Brain, Carla Gugino as Maggie, Dennis Franz as Cabbie, and Ian McShane as Hauk. Oh yeah, and Idris Elba as The Duke.

Of course Kurt Russell would be my ideal choice.

I'd like to see another one with Russell in the role. BUT, if I can't have that, I'd say Guy Pearce is the man to take the mantle of Snake. He already did an Escape From New York remake of sorts with Lockdown. He was the best thing about that movie.

Neither

Statham is just Statham, and will add this to a list of pointless shitty action re-makes he seems to be collecting as of late. Hardy just took on the role of Mad Max, which is annoying enough (love Hardy, but c'mon that's Gibson's franchise) having Hardy take on two past roles is just too much.

This is all before taking into account the fact that we don't need a re-make anyway.

I got nothing against these two guys because this movie shouldn't have gone ahead in the first place and they both deserve better but since my cries will fall on deaf ears, I'd go with Hardy who'd give Snake the necessary character depth better than Statham would.
I dunno maybe my choice is a little baised because i just watched Rocknrolla the other day.

If they have to do a remake which I prefer them not too then I wanna see David Morrissey as Snake Plissken after seeing him with the eye patch as the Governor in the Walking Dead theres times I think hes Snake with his coat. I don't care if he has already worn a eye patch in something so popular but I think hes better choice than Hardy and Statham as much as I like both of them alot. Plus David Morrissey has a better american accent than statham.
