Are Mark Strong and Bryan Cranston vying for the role of Lex Luthor in the Superman/Batman film?

2 years agoby:

While we all speculate on who will play the next Batman/Bruce Wayne, there's one other character that is said to appear in Zack Snyder's follow up to MAN OF STEEL, the untitled SUPERMAN/BATMAN film, and that's Lex Luthor. Portrayed by Gene Hackman in the early Donner films and then by Kevin Spacey in Bryan Singer's SUPERMAN RETURNS, the door is now open to bring in some fresh, bald blood and two names are popping up on the radar of late. The first is none other than Walter White himself, Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston. His name has been circulating thanks to El Mayimbe at Latino Review and, honestly, I think Cranston is the man for the job without question.

However, there's one other famously bald actor who has played the villain many times over and that's Mark Strong. Digital Spy caught up with Strong and posed the question about him possibly portraying Superman's arch nemesis, to which he cryptically replied, "All I can say is... watch this space." So, does that mean he's in talks, being considered, or just blissfully hopeful? Hard to say, but it would also be hard to believe that Strong wouldn't at least be considered by producers for the role.

If they're going for an older Batman I see no reason why we can't have an older Lex as well. After all, MAN OF STEEL is not Smallville and it's not necessary for both characters to be the same age (or appear to be). Personally, I think Cranston is it. Mark Strong is great, no doubt, but we've seen his villains many times over now. I'd like to see Cranston "break bad" on ol' Lex Luthor and bring a new kind of intensity to the role.

What do you think? Strong or Cranston? Or, someone else entirely?

SUPERMAN/BATMAN is slated to hit sometime in 2015.

Extra Tidbit: Clancy Brown is the king of the animated Lex Luthor. That is all.

I would take either of these guys, but I slightly favor Strong. I've actually thought about him before in regards to the part.

MICHAEL ROOKER AS LEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rooker has an incredible screen presence and has been HIGHLY UNDERATED for so many years. Only recently (thanks to Merl and Walking Dead) has he finally got the respect he deserves. I cant wait to check him out in Guardians. Rooker is clearly the perfect choice and I cant believe no one has considered him yet. He has the physical presence and he can be really sinister when he wants to be. Mark Strong is great but he was already Sinestro. Cranston is the man, but would make a much better

That's... actually, not a bad idea. Rooker pretty much owns every scene that he's in.

Terry O' Quinn!

How many times do we have to see Mark Strong play the big-boss bad guy in a film? Didn't he technically play Lex Luthor in Kick-Ass? I like the guy but sheesh! I say get Terry O' Quinn (John Locke from LOST) to play Luthor. He's got the mild-mannered face with the "I'm a f*cking psycho" eyes.

Fist off, Lex Luthor has to be my least favorite villain of all time, and my favorite aspect of MOS was that there was no Luthor. Having said that, if he has to be in the next one, I think Strong is a no brainer. He looks freakishly like Lex already. I'm a huge Cranston fan, but I feel like he'd just be playing Walter White on a bigger scale.

Now, this is a perfect role for John Hamm in my opinion, just make him bald!! You know, just because Lex Luthor is bald in the comics doesn't mean the only actors that are suitables for the role are the ones that are bald in real life.

I think either would be a great choice here, but I am leaning more towards Cranston. But even more than that I would love for the role to go to Micheal Rosenbaum since we know he really wants it. It's always nice to have an actor in a movie who actually wants and cares about the project.

If only..

If only we could convince David Goyer to hire someone to help him write dialogue and character development, and get Zack Snyder to fire his DP: Michael J. Fox, this may actually wind up a great flick.

Screw Luthor..

I'd rather see Bryan Cranston play Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne. (No, that's not a typo.) Michael Keaton is the closest we've come to an almost physically humble Bruce Wayne, someone you wouldn't think of as Batman. I think Cranston fits that bill while also serving as a somber Dark Knight.
Yes, he'd also make a fantastic Gordon and likely anyone you asked him to play, but I'd like to see him as Batman.
As long as Lex Luthor is arrogant, egotistical and proud I don't mind who plays

Give the part to Mark Strong

that'll leave the far more talented Cranston available to better projects that aren't written by David S*** Goyer.

Mark Strong FTW!

Even though Mark Strong is becoming typecast, and expected by the viewing public as a villain, he has the physical profile, and the attitude to portray Lex Luthor....Billy Zane would be a close second. Bryan Cranston is an excellent actor, and is underrated, but I don't think he could pull of performing the roll of LL.

Honestly, neither, as I'd love to see Cranston as Jim Gordon, and Strong was already Sinestro and the bad guy in Kick Ass. I'd like to see someone really different for Luthor. Also I don't think we're in for another same-old Lex, I am 100% confident we'll get billionaire Lex w/ Presidential goals.

I'm so SICK & TIRED . . . .

of watching Lex Luthor in every Superman flick! ! ! ! ! there are far more challenging super villains other than Lex that Sups & Batman can battle. ultimately, i will still be a fan & watch it, since i'm a huge Superman fan. but i definitely won't be running to the movie theater to watch it, unless it has gotten plenty of awesome reviews.

Neither

Both are great actors, but it's too soon after Breaking Bad for Cranston and Strong had his shot at DC villainy. There are plenty of great actors who I'm sure would be willing to part ways with their hair for this role.

My pick, for what it's worth, is Danny Huston.

Denzel Washington would be a good Lex...but just wondering if anti race people will question why white criminal bosses like The Kingpin from Marvel and Lex (if it were to happen) had their race changed. Funny enough, while I don't have a problem with this (Michael Clarke Duncan was a great Kingpin), I do have an issue with Bond being black. I don't know, may be I am a closet racist. Noooooooooooooooo!

I hate it when they significantly change a character and it feels like a "stunt", and yes sometimes when they change a character's race for a film it falls into that category. However, Denzel would be a flipping amazing Lex Luthor. I think he seriously might be #2 on my list now.

i hope they realize the actor playing Lex doesn't already have to be bald....

anyone can become bald for the role.

either way, Cranston doesn't work in my opinion. even in Heisenberg mode, he has too much of a vulnerable side. it's built into his face and makes him so awesome as Walter White. Lex shouldn't get any sympathy from the audience. he needs to be cold.

Funny how Conroy owned both Wayne and Batman...Clancy Brown owned Lex and Hamill owned Joker. The animated people behind DC's animated universe have always known what they're doing. It's a crying shame they don't control the the going on's with the WB's cinematic universe which seems all over the place.

As for this story, I don't know who Cranston is so can't make a judgement on him. I have, however, seen enough of Strong to know that he could own the roles of Lex or..Brainiac!

You might know Cranston as the dad from Malcolm in the Middle. And of course he's currently starring in the mega-popular show Breaking Bad on AMC. And you're right, DC Animated's producers simply nailed every bit of casting on all of their shows. Everyone you mentioned plus Dana Delaney as Lois Lane, Michael Ansara as Mr. Freeze, Cory Burton as Brainiac, Michael Ironside as Darkseid... never a single misstep.

Casting Cranston would be a terrible idea. Why? Because as soon as he shows up on-screen with a shaved head, the audience is just going to see Walter White, not Lex Luthor. Strong would be a better choice, although honestly I feel there's probably better casting to be found beyond just those two guys.

Of course, I say that in violation of my own opinion that we don't need yet another movie with Lex Luthor as the villain.

BILLY ZANE for Lex Luthor! He's a good actor that's done a wide range of roles. But who am I kidding...with the actors they got in MOS they'll be looking at Oscar contenders. Let's just put any actor on the shortlist who has previously shaved his head for a role.

If Mark Strong wants to completely cement himself to playing bad guys for the rest of his career, then he should probably take the Luthor role if he's offered it. Cranston would make a fine Luthor, but I don't think he's the guy for the part. What happened to that rumor of Bradley Cooper shaving his head for Man of Steel? I'd love to see him chew some scenery as the CEO of LuthorCorp.

And what about Chris Evans as Flash....

Both good choices for Lex Luthor. I'd like to see a lesser known actor. Jay Giannone. [link] would make a good Lex Luthor.

Mark Strong would be my pick of the 2. While I'd like to see a Lex that is a bit older than Clark, I think that you need someone that can, & wants to, go the distance of playing the character for at least the next 10 year's. Not saying that Cranston can't. I'm just not sure he will.

I agree with worthystevens that Bryan Cranston would make a great Gordon. He played an amazing Gordon in the Batman Year One animated film, which was as much a story about Gordon as it was about Batman. Gary Oldman's version of Gordon did take inspiration from that story and how the Nolan films treated the character is one of the aspects I really enjoyed. Before Batman Year One, Gordon in the comics was not much more than a cop for Batman to talk to, but Cranston cottoned on to how much the

Can't imagine Cranston being to interested in such a black & white villain role that pales in comparison to his now iconic Walter White. It would look like he is cashing in on his Walter role and be no challange for him in any way. It would be a terrible career move and a step into the typecast trap.

As much as I love Cranston, I just don't see him in a role like this. He definitely has an intensity, but he's a very layered actor who plays the typical everyman on an evil streak, very well... not the polished, typical megalomaniac billionaire that Luthor is.

Lesser of two evils...

Strong would be my go-to Lex out of the two posited choices. But the best choice would be:
JOSH BROLIN

How about neither? Strong's better at playing rough-edged protagonists and seems kind of bored as the villain, while any devious bald-headed criminal mastermind Cranston plays will never live up to Walt. And if you're going to stay true to the comics, you'd need someone roughly Cavill's age...both Strong and Cranston have hit the 50 mark.

Mark Strong as Alfred Pennyworth....now THAT is something I'd like to see.

Get an actor not known for playing villains...someone who can bring a fresh

Clancy Brown

Even when he plays a good guy in a movie his voice sends chills down my spine

I don't know if I could buy him as Luthor. However, I think he would make a very interesting Gordon.

Mark Strong, and here's why:

I want Cranston for Jim Gordon. Ever since he NAILED Gordon in the year one animated movie, he has been my top pick. I am always amazed that Andrea Romano manages to get voice actors who look like the actual characters. Kin Shriner as green arrow, Morena Baccarin as black canary, Nathan Fillion as green lantern...Hell, they should just shave Clancy Brown and give him the Lex job.

Oh mark strong for sure. Then he can play joker, and cheetah, black manta, no reason he can't play every major villain in every DC franchise is there?

In my opinion, Mark Strong is the ideal candidate to play the villain, as he has a stronger(no pun) archtype, which he does really well. With that said, you can't help but want a change of pace and see a great actor such as Cranston for the role.

DC keeps knocking it out of the park with their villain casting. Michael Shannon was an amazing Zod, and either of these actors will be a great Luthor.

Though I like Strong and the work he has done I feel it may not be in their best interest to use him as Luthor. Even if they don't bring Reynolds in as Green Lantern I think it is best if they use what is already established and that being said he was awesome as Sinestro. I also think that Cranston would bring more to the role as well. I think he is the better choice. I do agree with Soloist, though, Terry O'Quinn would be a Kick as Luthor also.

I would be fine with either one of them getting the role since they're both incredible actors and would bring alot of depth and range to Lex Luthor.

I still like the idea of Terry O' Quinn (aka Locke from Lost) also being Lex Luthor as well.

That would be some damn fine casting if DC could pull it off.

And Jon Hamm or Thomas Jane for Harvey Dent/Two Face.
