Are these the frontrunners to play Snake in the Escape from New York remake?

Aug. 29, 2014by:

As much as you (or Kurt Russell) may vehemently dislike the fact that an ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK reboot is in the works, it looks like it may happen sooner or later (although at this rate, it looks like the latter). Last we heard the film was actually inspired by the fantastic Arkham games, the second of which features a walled-in prison-like city. While Plissken will always be the lead, they may be going for a bit more of a team effort this time around.

Starlog lists the team as such:

Plisskens team consists of Mina, a warzone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger; Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving member of the Presidents security detail who harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plisskens former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery.

This brings us to the main man himself, Snake Plissken. While no one has signed anything yet, word is that offers are going to be extended to the following three actors: Charlie Hunnam (PACIFIC RIM, Sons of Anarchy), Jon Bernthal (THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, The Walking Dead) and Dan Stevens (THE GUEST, Downton Abbey).

Inherently, I'm never against the idea of a remake/re-imagining/re-boot, but it all comes down to whether or not the filmmakers are able or willing to try something different. Even though I wasn't a fan of Zack Snyder's DAWN OF THE DEAD, it was a different beast than its George Romero counterpart. None of these actors are Kurt Russell, and that's fine as maybe they can bring something different to the table. I feel who they choose as a director will really go a log way in telling us whether or not this is another cash grab.

Extra Tidbit: Who would you prefer out of these three actors?

if they're going for a younger Snake then Hunnam, BUT if they're going for a Snake that's a little older, Bernthal gets my vote.

My favorite action movie getting a remake.... Knew it was coming but why. Why doesn't anyone come up with something original or how about an original story. A movie doesn't have to have the main character from the first movies as long as its done right. Why not make a sequel based on the events that occurred after Snake shut the world down pretty much. I know people are going to complain "Its not Escape from NY if Snake's not the main character." Ill respond with "Its not Snake if its not Kurt

I know people are going to complain "Its not Escape from NY if Snake's not the main character." Ill respond with "Its not Snake if its not Kurt Russel." A movie can be good if theres effort. This remake like all remakes will be bad to average so why not change it up. Do something like 20 years after Escape from LA the world never got back to the way it was after what Snake did. Have a new character and make it a semi sequel/reboot. Which means it will be a sequel but can be sorta a reboot as well with the same feeling then you can have Kurt Russell cameo somewhere as Snake. I will never understand why people will rather see a full reboot of pretty much a lazy re-imagining of a great movie than see someone who has the imagination pull off something that can be in the same universe as well as being its own thing. Prometheus is a great example of setting up a movie in a exsisting universe but turning it into its own thing at the same time. Even though some hate that movie to me its better than any remake based off a 80s film. Even Terminator is doing something similar where the new movie is to continue off from the previous movies but then become its own thing.

Escape from New York will be a good movie to expand the universe with not just reboot it. I would like to see more of the universe John Carpenter created not some universe that Carpenter created then someone decided to make their own version of it. So please to who evers making this movie just do something new. Take who ever is running up to play Snake (which my pick would be Jon Bernthal) and create a new badass in the universe. I can really see a new character played by Jon Bernthal get into the face of Kurt Russell's Snake. If the movie was to be about how the world was after Snake shut it down there could be some very great sci fi/post apocalyptic story going on. If they take Jon Bernthal and have him be this character with similar traits have his own story that interwinds with Snake Plissken it could open up the door where Bernthal and Russll run across each other. Russell has stated he had always been interested in returning to the Snake Plissken role again but feels he is too old for it so that would be perfect to tone down his role. Or maybe have the movie be Berthal (I am going to continue using him) hired to track down and eliminate Plissken which takes him to some unique and interesting places. Then maybe throughout the course of the movie you catch glimpses of Snake but theres no opportunity was taken to get up close enough til the end. You can really get the build up for people when you see from a distance Snake gunning down some guys and wondering off. There could be so many ideas I just don't want to see a no effort version with a modern twist of a movie was great.

Where's Josh Holloway?

I mean c'mon...how does Hollywood NOT see the perfectness in that casting?

Well... I suppose I don't really want this to turn out to be good, so get that dreadfully dull Charlie Hunnam in there.

If this is happening and these are the three it has been narrowed down to then I would have to say Jon Bernthal. Not only do I think that he could do a very interesting take on Plissken but he is also the only one of the three that is an American and considering Snake is a very American character then it only seems fitting. Not that the Hunnam or Stevens would do a bad job.

I always thought/hoped that instead of a 'reboot' they would make a companion piece to the first film showing..
- how Snake got caught.
- what happened to the President while Snake was making his way through New York.
- how they got to the bridge.
Some scenes you would likely have to include and unfortunately reshoot. But the idea of something that runs directly alongside and throughout without retelling the original story beat for beat seems interesting to me.

"Reboot"? This thing won't make it as far as an inferior sequel involving surfing and mechanical sharks.

A third 'Escape' is the only 'Escape' I want to see. Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, John Carpenter as director, John Carpenter as composer.

I agree about a third Escape, but am not opposed to a recast. After seeing what they're doing with the new Mad Max, if they got the casting right I think it could work. But screw another "reboot."

Kurt Russell. John Carpenter. Escape from Earth.
Please. Please. Please. Fucking Please.
...and then no other option will be discussed ever again.

Can we cut a deal? How about they get to reboot this franchise if Russell and Carpenter get to make a sequel to Big Trouble In Little China? I'd consider that acceptable.

Like any actor has returned to an iconic role. It's not as if Bruce Willis... oh wait, he did. Harrison Ford would never... scratch that. I can't imagine Arnold or Sly returning to... never mind.

Kurt Russell is Snake. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

A Hollywood studio needs to let John Carpenter and Kurt Russell finish their f*cking 'Escape' trilogy. Seriously, the fact that a talentless hack like Tim Burton is still directing, but a genius like John Carpenter hasn't been hired by a major studio since the late 90s is complete bullshit. I want to see 'Escape from the Earth', not a reboot of 'Escape from New York'. Anyway, if they do end up remaking 'Escape from New York', I'd like to see Wyatt Russell (Kurt's Son) play Snake. He is a talentless hack. Have you seen Dark Shadows, Batman Returns, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Mars Attacks, and Planet of the Apes? All of those movies are awful.

Extra tidbit: Kurt Russel

He is Snake plain and simple. It would be like some one recasting Rocky, Dirty Harry, or The Terminator.

...any particular reason why they can't just have Kurt Russell reprise the role for a third and conclusive chapter in what would then be a trilogy?? If they're worried about box office draw, get a high profile actor that's currently a big draw to play the villain and maybe a few other currently known actors for smaller parts. Enough of the Goddamn remakes! Christ, is that all this new generation is going to have (countless recycled incarnations of gems from days past)?

if any of these three, then easily Charlie Hunnam

but, I'm disappointed. Last we heard Jason Statham and Tom Hardy were in talks for the lead role. Would've absolutely LOVED to have seen Statham as Snake!!
