Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle In Time casts Storm Reid in lead role

09.14.2016

The more I hear about Ava DuVernay’s A WRINKLE IN TIME, the more I like it. I've loved the casting of Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which (Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah Winfrey, respectively), and the casting continues to kill it. The main character of the novel, Meg Murry, is now going to be played my multi-racial actress Storm Reid (12 YEARS A SLAVE).

In A WRINKLE IN TIME, Meg Murry (Reid) is a smart, strong-willed girl who goes out to find her lost scientist father in another dimension, helped by a classmate, her genius younger brother, and three angelic figures named Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which.

This is great news! I love the idea of adding more diversity to the cast (already evident with the casting of Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling), as there is definitely a dearth of POC main characters in family films (not saying they don't exist, but that the ratio is definitely more than a little skewed, especially in big-budget fare). And with MOANA about Pacific-Islanders and QUEEN OF KATWE starring Lupita Nyong’o (who won't be covered in misguided motion-capture this time), it looks like Disney is doing a great job of adding more diversity to their slate (which isn't entirely new, but it's good to see that it's continuing).

So you guys excited for this adaptation?

Extra Tidbit: Meg Murry was played by Katie Stuart in the 2003 TV movie.

Scratching this off the list to see. Don't like the director and the second I heard her being hired I knew exactly what would happen. Sure enough it did. If you respect the source material you stay true to it. I detest race and gender bending stories. Call me a racist I don't give a fuck. I'm a purist, I like seeing on screen what I read with the same characters as close to exact as possible. Silly me. A minority writes a story with characters reflecting what they see, their experiences, and

A minority writes a story with characters reflecting what they see, their experiences, and the way they see the world and its lauded as brilliant. If the story is by a white person that features white characters...WHITE WASHING, WHITE PRIVELIDGE, MUST REPLACE NOW, DIVERSIFY!!! Fucking disgusting. People whine and rightfully so about cultural appropriation when a film is whitewashed like Gods of Egypt or Exodus Gods and Kings. Those movies without a doubt deserved the backlash they got and I was one of the people bashing them for it. Two wrongs don't make a right however. Its downright sickening when people who rail against appropriation if white people whitewash other ethnicities stories & characters, yet cheer and support when production race/gender swap white stories and characters. Ahh yes "equality" at its finest.

An excellent young actress who will do well in the role

I wondered when Ava DuVernay was hired that she would go for a mult-racial cat.

Let the traditionalists howl; they're beyond boring in any case.
