Avary does time

09.30.2009

Roger Avary, writer of some fan favorite movies, RULES OF ATTRACTION (Yes, people like that movie), SILENT HILL, and the one that got him a shared academy award, PULP FICTION has been sentenced to one year in jail for vehicular manslaughter.

As one of our readers so eloquently stated, we are a movie website, not a law website (still cracks me up), so here are the facts.

Avary pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving back in August of 2008. The writer was driving 100 mph when his car crashed into a telephone pole. The accident killed a passenger and ejected his wife who was treated for non-life threatening injuries. On top of the year in jail, Avary also received 5 years probation.

Wow. If that were anyone else they would have gotten a little bit more than a year in jail and 5 years probation, don't you think? Then again he's gotta live with that shit for the rest of his life. Avary was currently working on an adaptation of the FPS (first person shooter) "Return to Castle Wolfenstein", but it looks like he might have to put that off for now.

Extra Tidbit: Good caption for that photo: 'Who's going to jail? This guy.'

I agree with "filmaddict" below. I've met Avary a couple of times and he was a REALLY down-to-earth guy, real nice to me, even before I even had this dinky website.

He also ADMITTED to his mistake and will be doing the TIME. There are MANY PEOPLE in the world who can't do either of those things, so I think he also deserves a little respect for owning up to this tragic event. I'm not CONDONING what he did whatsoever, but if the option is a guy who does that and RUNS AWAY FROM IT and a guy who

Now

Next up...Polanski. A year in the pin and five years probation seems extremely lenient. Must have had a good lawyer.

The guy gets what he deserves

I like Rules of Attraction a lot. It's very underrated.

Dumb move on his part but he deserves to be punished if that's what caused somebody to lose their life.

And Rules Of Attraction is my favorite movie. I'm the opposite of Zombie Platypus down below. I could relate to the movie big time!

Too bad for him he's not a pro-athlete, he could've got off with a couple months.

Well...

I've spoken with the guy before. He used to read my blog. He seems nice enough, and it's unfortunate what happened--but, you know, he pleaded guilty and admitted his wrongs and didn't try to hide behind it as many other celebrities do when tragedies occur. I'm not justifying what happened -- just providing a different perspective of the result.

If I was in jail Id used the time to write. I guess he could try and write an incredible screenplay.

Like Judd Nelson said...

"Christ. Vince Neil only did 30 days and he killed somebody." Same charges, too.

I was wondering what would become of this. I knew he was drunk, hadn't heard about the 100 mph bit. I just don't get it. What the hell was wrong with him, and his willing passengers?

By the way, I'm one of those people that liked 'Rules of Attraction'. I can't relate to any of the characters at all, but I love it. Avary's direction was really top notch there.

Extra Tidbit

LOL, right on.

Hopefully this means this guy gets booted off of Silent Hill 2, he and Gans singlehandedly ruined the potential of the first film.

But beyond that the guy is just a real scumbag of a human being, and if the producers and studio in charge of SH2 are wise they'll ditch him and get a new writer just to avoid the bad PR.
