Avatar 3D roadshow?

Aug. 21, 2009by: Mike Sampson

Weren't wowed by yesterday's AVATAR trailer? That might be because you saw it on 2D on your computer instead of in a theater in 3D as it was intended. Fox and James Cameron seem keenly aware of that and realize that even after Avatar Day, there will still be plenty of people they need to win over. How do they plan to do this?

Fox has partnered with Panasonic for an aggressive marketing campaign that will have the 3D footage coming to YOU. How exactly? Panasonic will be taking a number of their 103" 3D compatible HDTVs and creating an AVATAR roadshow, if you will. They'll be installing the TVs inside rather large luxury tractor trailers and heading out on a tour or US and Europe. The truck would presumably stop at your mall or local movie theater and you can head inside to be brainwashed treated to "full HD 3D assets" from AVATAR.

It's unclear when exactly the tour will begin (the press release states simply "this fall") or where it will stop along the way but expect more details soon. This is the one time that it's OK if you a stranger asks you to come inside their truck to see something really cool...

Extra Tidbit: James Cameron is editing the film using 3D Panasonic monitors.

Terrible

Just kidding. I second LoCkEd_N_LoAdEd. I absolutely loved it. I wasn't expecting anything, and I'm not usually a fan of CG, but I had this stupid smile on my face the whole time. I couldn't help it! Unbelievable. I can't wait for December.

and face about melted too, just like ShortRound's avatar below. Not kidding, that was the most awesome thing I've seen in a long time.

One thing I'll say about this movie; considering its budget, and all this marketing, it better be bigger than Titanic if they want to make all that money back.

After seeing the Avatar Day footage, I was blown away. I'm still in shock over the night & day difference between the 3D & 2D footage. How do that even work?

Avatar might not make much its opening weekend, but word of mouth will make this film a major success.

I did not go to Avatar day, but I saw the 25 minutes of footage at comic-con. This movie looks very amazing. You need to see it in 3D to get that effect. This sounds weird, but even the parts when people are just walking around in the army base has a really spectacular look to it because of the depth. It feels like you are actually there with the characters.

I also just got back from Avatar day, and it was absolutely fantastic. It's one of the most visually stunning movies ever made. As long as the story is solid, this movie will be amazing. The trailer does not do Avatar any justice.

Since when was there a James Cameron movie that didn't have a good story? Case in point, Terminator , Aliens, The Abyss, T2, True Lies, Titanic... the list goes one. Anywho...

I too saw the preview, and man... Avatar is going to rock the boat. YOu know how for years people talked about how Star Wars "inspired" them to make movies... That's what this flick is going to be. I'm willing to bet money on that. It's going to be huge.

AVATAR DAY

i just got home from it and just listen to me. read this with no hate or love towards avatar. i walked in the Imax 3D theater with a little dissapointment from yesterdays trailer. but then the tables turnned around when i saw this 16-minute preview. boys and girls, the trailer didnt even scratch the surface. i had a smile on my face the whole time i was sitting there with my 3D glasses on. and the only part that sucked was when the screen went to black and the lights turned on. everyone was

AVATAR will un doubtly get best movie of the year hands down.

Sure, in style this looks like a huge blockbuster, but I don't think this will be the big hit everyones expecting it to be. I'm guessing maybe around a "Terminator Salvation disappointing" $100m. And I agree with Red4 about 3D looking like layers.

Saw the 3D Avatar Preview today. Not that impressed actually, and that's not only because the theater totally messed up the screening. After about 5 minutes the sound went out of sync and stayed that way for the rest of the 15 minutes.

So will this movie even be released on video? Or is it only worth watching if you see it in IMAX 3D?

seen 17 mn

Just came back from a showing of 17 min of avatar on the biggest 3D IMAX screen in the world here in Oslo, Norway. It was the best i have ever seen in 3D. It's like an over the top animation movie. Feels a bit like watching a video game. The avatars remind me of Doug Jones as Abe Sapien in Hellboy. The graphics are ground breaking, but im a bitt sceptical to the love story in the film!!!

only 4 more months Can't wait!!!!!

I think the movie looks fantastic without 3D; that's why I gave this a neutral rating, because 3D is just a gimmick in my opinion. I don't know what's wrong with my eyes or what, but 3D movies have never worked for me. They don't look 3D at all; they just look like layers sliding over one another, while giving me really bad eye aches. I saw the 3D Terminator show at Universal Studios, and I saw Beowulf in 3D. It didn't work on my eyes at all. I decided immediately after that I will stay away

People on the internet says the IMAX footage looks fantastic, much better than the teaser.
