Avatar destroys Blu-ray sales record on opening day

Apr. 23, 2010by: Paul Tassi

Not content with mere box office records, AVATAR is storming the DVD market, with its first day Blu-ray sales at 1.5M, more than doubling THE DARK KNIGHT’s previous record of 600K. All in all, AVATAR sold about 4M copies its opening day, but does the team behind the film care?

"We're not focusing on sales," "Avatar" producer Jon Landau said. "We're focusing on the events. There were 300 kids there today. They're the future, so this is raising awareness, and that's a great thing."

The event he’s referring to was a tree planting ceremony on the Fox lot for Earth Day, which is all well and good, but I’m guessing he cares a little bit about sales.

AVATAR is trying to stomp NEW MOON’s DVD record into the ground, as the vampire flick has sold 6.5M this year. With 4M its opening day, it’s a safe bet than the Na’vi will prevail over their furry and sparkly rivals shortly.

It ain’t 3D, but it’s the closest you’ll get for a little while until those newfangled 3D TVs start popping up. I actually never did see AVATAR in 2D, so I’ll be interested to see how well the film holds up at home.

Extra Tidbit: Dont forget, you can win a copy of the Blu-ray from us here!

My problem with this film

Everything looked too CGI, there were times I was looking @ Sam W., and couldn't tell if he was CG or real. I didn't feel once that the CGI charaters were real, it just looked to cartoony...

If you couldn't tell if he was CG or real doesn't that mean it is good CG?

Sooooo......

I finally checked out this movie now, to see what all the hype is about. I was completely unimpressed, yeah, nice visuals and all, but the story sucked. I turned the movie off after an hour because it was so bad.

Totally agree, I never saw it in theaters, but was highly disappointed when watching the Blu Ray. Don't get me wrong, it looked awesome, and was an alright movie, but i probably could only stand to watch it once more at the most.

Yeah, I'm gonna make another attempt at trying to watch it all the way through. Like I mentioned before, beautiful scenery, but not such a good story, with sub-par to bad acting.

Finally saw Avatar tonight after purchasing it on blu-ray. Let me officially apologize for my negativity about the film in the past, this movie blew my mind & i watched it on my computer & not the blu-ray yet. Should have known better than to doubt James Cameron, the 12 year wait was worth it.

Jeez, I really feel sorry for you. I'm no die-hard Avatar fan but even I know that the absolute best way to enjoy that movie is on the big screen. No 3DTV, Blu-Ray, or home theater set is going to do that movie justice. If it blew your mind away on a computer screen, imagine how you would've gone gaga when watching it in the cinema. Why didn't you, by the way?

Not surprising. But this whole "we're more interested in the moral values" is getting kinda' preachy. I like Avatar, and I think it's a cool movie even in 2D, but a few things like Sam Worthington really put me off. I can't stand the guy. And to think that this took decades to make is a lil' odd. It's pretty amazing, but not "15-years in the making" amazing, y'know what I mean?

Sam is a pretty limited actor, his range is shit, but unlike T4 or Clash I think he worked in this film. He represented the avg Joe. And just think <<<<<<>>>>>>

Now that he is pure Na'vi we won't have to deal with his expressionless face any more, they can actually make his CGI self act. Also I don't think it really took 15 years to make, just took a decade for the tech to catch up to the idea

It was an alright film I don't get the crazy fandom for this movie though. The characters weren't fun or interesting at all. I like the message it sends but the characters and dialogue just put this in a category of movies to show off my tv with. Can people stop using the word hater too. That has to be the most annoying word. I just picture an annoying gay dude saying saying it everytime I read it on someones post.

damn hater, I bet your business card sux too

but seriously, the dialogue was fine, but the movie was great, if it wasn't then it wouldn't have made a fraction of what it grossed

I'll give you that the dialogue wasn't terrible but at best it was just fine. The movie is also an excellent movie, but to me none of the characters were memorable and there weren't any memorable lines. It feels they tried to push the "I see you" line to be memorable but it just came off as cheesy to me. My worry about this movie though is that it seems people are putting it on the same level as Star Wars which I think is not even close to that level. I'm just that what made this movie from

And dude my business card is bad ass.
10:23PM on 04/25/2010
I pretty much agree with you there, it was no star wars, then again star wars didn't always have the best dialogue either...even though they did leave you with some pretty memorable lines. I think why people loved it so much is because it took CGI to the next level, and while we will excuse the lack of original story and dialogue for this film, JC won't get a pass for the sequel. IMO

I'm sure it's bad ass, but does it have a water mark?

I wanted to wait for the special edition, but I wasn't able to. Saw it in the store and had to buy.

Have to say, the film holds up amazingly well in 2D & on a small screen. I actually enjoyed it more this way (bumping up my rating from 8/10 to 9/10), and it's made me come to the conclusion that 3D is a distraction more than anything.

I'll admit, I use to criticize this movie like hell on more than one occasion and boy was I dead wrong. I just got done watching it and all I can say that it deserves all the praise it is getting. Fantastic movie in every aspect and Cameron did a great job. Beautiful cinematography. I'll probably double dip when the super edition comes out in November.

I'm an HD whore, so I'll get the SE later

Although it's a "mediocre" movie, I can't wait to see the BR and extra features. I own every James Cameron flick, so I kind of "have" to get it as a completist. Plus, I'm sure the Special Edition in November will have great features.

I'm very tempted to buy Avatar Blu-ray right now. But I'm gonna wait for a better version to come out. Avatar is a kind of movie that you need some special features to accompany the movie.

Best bluray I own

I really enjoyed the 3D theater version, and I was very impressed with the 2D bluray version as well...makes the money I shelled out on my HD tv and ps3 feel well worth it

to the haters...we out number you, by A LOT, so step back and just ignore it if you really hate the movie...

I for one think it brings CGI to a whole new level. That is why I loved the Abyss and T2; JC took good story ideas and gave us incredible movie experiences...and yes John Smith in space getting it on with a blue

I'm probably the only person on the planet who still hasn't seen this. Oh, well.

EDIT: No, wait, it seems that Zohan hasn't, either! I suddenly feel like Will Smith in "I Am Legend" when he meets the chick and the kid, and then the movie goes to shit, and ... okay, I'll stop now.

"We're not focusing on sales," "Avatar" producer Jon Landau said. "We're focusing on the events"

Riiiiight. That's why you're releasing this, then possibly a re-release, then possibly a big special edition, then a theatrical re-release.

Man, you greedy pigs know how to con people big time. I'm not falling for the Avatar con.

Pocahantas meets Dances with Wolves in space with Blue Smurf Thundercat people. Yeah, very original.

-Do you not know how business works?

-Have you ever enjoyed anything that wasn't totally original?

I know that your answer to both of those question is yes. So, with that in mind, quit being a whiny bitch.

I agree terminal ... hilariously pathetic that guy would even say something so blatantly false.... and equal parts offensive he expects anyone to buy it.

Now if he'd followed that comment about kids with a , "because then we will unlock earnings for generations to come!" ... then I'd believe the first part.

Why does it seem that people either love or hate Avatar, while I only think it's above average. I don't think it deserves best picture, but it's a fun sci-fi/fantasy/action film and better than a lot of blockbuster movies. I don't like that they rushed out a bare bones edition to cash in the film's success while it's fresh in people's mind, only to release an extended version in Nov, but they aren't the first to do so. I can wait until Nov.

Well, let's see: The majority of internet posting computer users are youths. Youths have an inherent need to 'be different' and independent. Not all youth does this, but that perpetually-there feeling can, and therefore does, periodically cause said youth to act out in overt manners.

If you notice people who have just watched a truly awful film (let's say... Gigli), they tend to simply go, "Well, that sucked" and move on with their lives. But, if that same person sees a blockbuster like

To Hunter: Uh, no they don't. Every last one of them says the exact same thing; about the story being unoriginal. That's not really, "...their reason[s]..." when that one thing has been said 10,000 times.

Plus, how is giving a reason for hating something an, "At least". At least what? "At very least they give their reasons for not liking it." - Um, okay. I'm not sure what your point is but okay.

My point I'm trying to make to Jeff527 is that he doesn't give any reason at all as to why Avatar was so great.

You can say a lot more than the story. The cheesy dialogue, the underdeveloped characters, the overall ridiculousness of some of the things in the movie. Top those off with a redundant story and you have yourselves a beautiful, yet mediocre, movie to watch.

I doubt it holds up at all. Avatar's sole redeeming factor was the effects, and as those cannot be adequately and appropriately translated into the home video market, at least not by the vast majority, it has nothing else going for it.
