Avatar game by Ubi.

Avatar Realizing it would be criminal not to develop a next gen video game for his epic sci fi adventure AVATAR, James Cameron has partnered with mega game manufacturer Ubisoft to create what'll presumably be an action adventure game to be released alongside the film in 2009.

Cameron, it seems, was immensely impressed by Ubisoft's plans for the game, mentioning, "I told the Ubisoft team I wanted them to be free to do their very best work and not think of this as a movie-based game. They responded with a fully realized presentation which captured the soul of the world and the characters, while promising to be a knockout game on its own terms. Their passion inspired my confidence that they are going to do something transcendental." Wow, sounds ambitious.

According to AVATAR producer Jon Landau, the game won't be a strict retelling of the film's story but "instead play out as a nonlinear story that shapes itself to the player's action inside the alien world."

In the film, Sam Worthington stars as an ex-Marine who's stranded as an avatar (a human mind in an alien body) on an alien planet inhabited by a race of sentient beings known as Na'vi and finds himself smack dab in the middle of a civil war. The film's avatar plot device prompted Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot to throw out this bizarrely cryptic statement that the game will "let us see the world and ourselves from another angle, acting as a mirror that will help us understand the consequences of our choices." Umm, how bout less with the moral lessons and more with the kick ass sci fi action adventuring, k? It's a video game, for Pete's sake. Let the movie handle the dramatic morality. AVATAR is set for release May 22nd, 2009.

Extra Tidbit: We may have gotten a spy shot at the Na'vi last month.
