Avatar is officially the highest grossing film EVAR

Jan. 26, 2010by: Dave Davis

After steamrolling the competition since its release, Jim Cameron's big blue epic AVATAR has officially taken the box office crown away from... Jim Cameron.

TITANIC just plowed into one of those floating moon-mountains and sunk to number 2 on the all-time box office charts (yes yes, not adjusting for inflation). In 39 days, AVATAR has roped in a global total of $1,858,866,889, compared to TITANIC's measly $1,843,201,268. Next stop: 2 billion!

Fox says this: "We are deeply gratified that so many millions of people around the globe have embraced AVATAR. Its success results from the efforts of literally thousands of people, who, over the course of several years, worked to bring James Cameron's vision of Pandora to life. The themes of protecting the environment, respecting life, and yearning for a peaceful planet have united moviegoers worldwide. We're very proud of, and grateful to, James Cameron, his amazing and dedicated team, and all the many people at Fox, who worked so long and so hard to achieve this milestone."

For those who grumble every time a new 3D movie is announced, better get used to it -- 72% of AVATAR's tally ($1.35 billion) has come from the 3D showings. So expect studios to view the format as an acceptable business approach for quite a while...

Extra Tidbit: Although I enjoyed AVATAR, the Editing Room's abridged version of the script is pretty damn funny.

Ah... big bunch of fail here lol. Might as well start the thread off this way. As least they admit that most of the money comes from higher priced 3-D showings.
Come on -20 rating! lol
I kid, I kid Avatards - you know you love me. Lol

Cad, to be honest, I can appreciate the fact that you've stuck to your guns from the start. I dont sahre your view on Avatar but taste is very personal and I cant fault you for not sharing mine.

I guess I should be happy, there's a lot worse that could be #1. These days hype and word of mouth make the money, not necessarily quality (like Transformers 2). Avatar had both, and although not the most original it was still above average. I guess after Dark Knight I believed, or wanted to believe, that a real quality movie could bring in the big $
9like gone with the wind or godfather), but I guess I forgot that hype played an equal part in it's box office gross. Anyway, I tip my hat

For an asshole who predicted it wouldn't make over 300 million domestically, I fully eat my words.

oh.. and I'd much rather have a sci-fi adventure film about not destroying our planet before it's too late be the #1 grossing movie ever over something like Transformers or Shrek 4

I too predicted it to be about 300 million. I underestimated the technology behind this film.

Amazing acheivment

Awesome accomplishment.
Man, if I hear another 'but adjusted for inflation its only..." I'll kill someone. Adjusted for inflation is only part of the equation. To acurately compare films from different times you need to factor in all forms of competition a film faces today that other films didn't in pervious times. That of course is too hard which is why an easy, lazy way to compare them is just by adjusted for inflation.
Let me ask you this. Would Gone with the Wind have sold the same number

To acurately compare films from different times you need to factor in all forms of competition a film faces today that other films didn't in pervious times. That of course is too hard which is why an easy, lazy way to compare them is just by adjusted for inflation.
Let me ask you this. Would Gone with the Wind have sold the same number of tickets today as it did in 1939? No. Would it have sold as many tickets as Avatar has in 2010, probably not. Actually I sure it wouldn't.
The reason? Competing forms of entertainment like Dvd, TV, Internet, Music, Radio and every other form of entertainment that fills our lives today is what Avatar is up against. GWTW didn't have any of that competition.
If you're gonna compare films, do it right and don't quote adjusted for inflation unless you include ALL the factors.
Like I said, to calculate all those factors is hard, if not impossible. The only real way to compare a film is to compare it against other films of its general timeframe. That way ticket prices/inflation ect are all roughly the same and you compare box office on an even keel. In which case Avatar have carved a massive path through all recent films, and ultimately will end up around about a billion dollars ahead of other films (ROTK)from similar times (Titanic excluded)
GWTW adjusted domestic gross is what 1.5+ billion. No film will ever acheive that today, because of the direct competition from other films and other forms of entertinament. So comparing them on adjusted for inflation figures is totally inaccurate.
Oh yeah, the other thing, the 3D premium is about 20% of regular ticket prices. Take 20% off 1,8 bil and you still have the outright number two movie, and it ain't over yet.

3-D is not here to stay...well, not exactly.

Three questions:

Are me and my girlfriend the only two people on this planet that have not seen this flick?

Was the typo in the headline some kind of reference to the movie don't get? Again, because I have not seen it yet.

Since 3-D was "reinvented" to get people to start watching films in the theater rather than their homes, what are theaters going to do when people can buy one of the Sony or Panasonic 3DTV's by the end of 2010? More likely 2011.

I really don't see 3D taking off in the home. Those TV's are impressive, but the fact you'd need a huge screen to actually make the 3D effective, the need for everyone to have glasses, and the severe lack of 3D programming in the beginning, it just seems like a bad idea. Then again, I never pictured Avatar grossing a trillion billion dollars.

Avatar blows. (Box office gross =/= good quality.)

Cameron pre-Titanic rules (Because they weren't sappy pieces of shit.)

3D can go to hell. (It's just another way for people to be elitist. "Oh no, you didn't watch it in 3D?! Criminal!")

I can't believe a movie topped Titanic. Well done, Mr. Cameron, you did it again. Avatar was an awesome movie, despite the haters (who, at this point, are resorting to sarcasm...I can only laugh). I'm just glad it was Avatar and not New Moon or Transformers 2...maybe that's something both the Avatards and the haters can agree on?

Awesome BUT...

Avatar is an awesome movie and all that but I was happy with Titanic being the biggest film of all time. Take note, I'm not a huge Titanic fan. But I know a raw-filmmaking movie when I see one and Titanic was a representative of what film is all about compared to Avatar. Yes, yes, movies must adapt to technology, but you can't argue with the fact that there's way more satisfaction in seeing a more "raw" movie with quality than seeing something that's 90% CGI.

Ok fine, Titanic (the ship itself) was mostly made-up on a computer screen but you know what I mean. [link]s a cool movie and it isn't too bad at the top spot. Way to go, Mr.Cameron.

this is good news

Like it or not, Avatar is a movie that gives people a reason to go see films at the theatre, a movie that can not be appreciated as much on DVD as on a big screen and in 3d. We are losing the appeal of movie houses, if this film can help to keep theatres relevant, i'll be the first to applaud.

And guess what, it's done just that.

Though I didn't think the film was amazing, I'm glad it's number 1, a completely original story thats had time and effort gone into it rather than an [link] etc. Hopefully this will make studios realise they are wrong shoving reboots down everyone's neck as it clearly isn't what people want.

Original? Who cares?

Yeah yeah, Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves..hey even A Man Called Horse, or Little Big Man. They all have the same sort of theme, man meets indian princess, marries, saves the tribe etc.

Who cares, they are all derogatory but in no way make the films less enjoyable. In fact, I adore all of the above mentioned films.

I think we should all celebrate the success of Avatar, all have a group hug and then go hug some trees.

I haven't seen Avatar yet and I'm really sick of people bitching about the movie hitting big. Titanic is probably the worst movie of all time and even if Avatar is half as bad I'll sleep well knowing it knocked that piece of crap out of the number one slot.

I have to admit though. I assumed Avatar would be a big hit but not THIS big. Good on Cameron.

Good stuff.

Avatar was pretty awesome, a real 'go-to-the-cinema type of film'. I'm glad Titanic has been knocked off, because it was a bit too sappy for my liking.

And for the people suggesting that 3d is getting people out of the home and into the movie house... I'm afraid to say that Sony are scheduled to release their 3d tv's this year, amongst other brands. Sorry guys :(

Editing Room...

I always found the Editing Room abridged scripts ptu films in the right perspective. You can enjoy a movie as entertainment, but the fact might very well be that the movie wasn't all that good. In Avatar's case, it isn't a completely awful movie, its decent actually... but to call it a Best Picture... to that I say watch more movies. Even is you love the movie, you have to admit that the enormous amount of stupidity ER's script points out makes it impossible to give it credit beyond being

GREAT NEWS

Its about fucking time! This is a great day to be a movie fan! I fucking hated Titanic, hated it grossed so much money. Avatar is so much more worthy of the top spot, I realize they were both made for the same guy, but trust me Cameron has redeemed himself in my eyes by making an awesome movie like Avatar! FUCK TITANTIC, Avatar is the real deal

Since a ticket for Avatar costs about twice as much as for Titanic.. No, it isn't... far from it so far.
Anyway. Avatar is pretty generic and bad. Titanic is a real great epic movie though. And Cameron overall is the most overrated director ever.

Yes it's overrated and the story's not that good. BUT, it brought a lot of attention to 3D and heavily utilized the IMAX format. So for that, I'll give Avatar props. Good news for an industry that seems to be alienating more and more of its audience every year.
