Avatar sequels may be further away than you expected

Jan. 11, 2012by: Dave Davis

If you've been aching to spend more time among the Na'vi, your post-Pandora depression may be continuing for a while longer.

Bleeding Cool recently caught up with AVATAR producer Jon Landau, who told them that the first of James Cameron's sequels is "four years away", which potentially puts AVATAR 2 in theaters around 2015 or 2016.

Cameron has been discussing a return to his deep space second home ever since the first movie was on its way to a $3 billion global box office total. But while Fox was optimistically anticipating the first of the two planned sequels in 2013 or 2014, perhaps the director hasn't made much headway beyond the details he's dropped in various interviews in the two years since the first blockbuster dazzled the world's eyeballs.

While Cameron has often discussed diving into the oceans of Pandora and/or visiting the moons of Polyphemus in the follow-ups (to be made back-to-back), he's also been involved in tech advancements, Mariana Trench research, an AVATAR prequel book, turning the screws on the 3D re-release of TITANIC, and overseeing Disney's upcoming AVATAR theme park.

Looks like for now, if you want another taste of the slender blue tree-loving aliens, you'll have to settle for whatever fanfics/slash can be found on the net.

I enjoyed Avatar for what it was, but I can live without any sequels. Much like Fincher with the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequels, I'd rather be seeing some original films from these directors rather than sequels.

Must be pretty awesome to only have to do your job once every 10 years.

You're right Izzy, but, personally, I'd rather take ONE EVENT MOVIE every 10 years, than one mediocre or even average movie every year. Beside, the time and passion he puts in EVERY ONE of his movies proves he's doing this job because he' passionate and love movies instead of because he needs a job (he can afford it!). Aside from Piranha 2, I don't think he's ever done a film he wasn't "in love" with, and I respect that. But, still, I can see your point.

OK, the fact remains he's a movie director who directs one movie every ten years.

Where's your logic,do you realize how much work he puts into his films. Not to mention being part of the development of future movie technology.

Funny cause me and my cohorts were just talking about this the other day and they was like "it'll be out this year, we should see the preview anytime" and I was like "I don't know about that..." but either way I don't even care. Avatar was alright.

Fuck him. I hate James Cameron for not delivering on Battle Angel. He was the only director who could pull it off beside Ridley Scott, who was never likely to direct it since Blade Runner is too similar. But Cameron has been poking around other bullshit for too long, and it's pretty much guaranteed that he'll never do it. So I say fuck him. Fuck him right up his stupid ass. James Cameron is the movie equivalent of a father who makes false promises, and whose son doesn't go to his funeral.

How dare you! Aliens and the Terminators alone this man deserves no hate. Though Battle Angel would be cool.

Instead of wasting money on these, he should spend the money to help Guillermo del Toro make sure At the Mountains of Madness sees the light of day sometime within the near future.

i too think the man deserves no hate, and in fact, although he did avatar which i think it sucked, the man gave me more joy than sorrow, with terminator, aliens, the abyss, true lies and titanic, so, i guess i can forgive him for making this piece of crap good for nothing blue movie, and yes, i too hope it takes forever for them sequels to get made, if at all, because hes not getting any younger :P
oh, and by the way, battle angel is already announced, so dont go losing all hope yet :)

I'm sorry but I was not amazingly impressed with Avatar. It was alright, but nothing mind-blowing in the aspect of it's story-line. Also I don't understand where the story could really go from where the original ended.

Oh and two thousand sixteen just seems to far away. The average film fan will have forgot about the first one.

James Cameron is a great director who makes great movies. I'm glad he's taking his time on the sequels to Avatar. Other directors like Steven Speilberg have lost a lot of my respect over the years by rushing out WAY too many movies. Tintin and War Horse were both in production at the same time, Cameron would never direct two movies at once. Tintin and War Horse both turned out average too. Avatar had an unoriginal story, but at least it was a good story. Tintin's plot and pacing was all over
