Avatar tops Titanic as highest grossing domestic movie ever

Feb. 3, 2010by: Mike Sampson

It's the moment you all knew was coming and it's finally here: AVATAR has surpassed TITANIC as the highest grossing movie in US history. AVATAR had already become the biggest worldwide hit but needed a few extra bucks to line its pockets with before taking the domestic box office crown. Fox announced this morning that AVATAR has officially brought in $601.2 million, pushing it over the $600.8 million that TITANIC raked in back in 1998. And AVATAR is still #1 at the box-office.

Naysayers will quickly point out that the 3D format and the extra ticket cost it incurs has created an unfair playing field with TITANIC, which brought in its cash solely on multiple viewings. Also AVATAR has a way to go before it can catch GONE WITH THE WIND as the leader in total ticket sales.

Yet it is still a remarkable achievement for Fox and James Cameron as many were speculating that AVATAR could bomb and barely make back its cost of production. With no films proving they can knock off AVATAR as #1 at the box-office and the 9 Oscar nominations it received only giving it an extra boost, it's possible it could reach $1 billion before it's all said and done (unlikely, but possible). The next real contenders to knock off AVATAR are THE WOLFMAN and VALENTINE'S DAY, which both hit theaters on February 12.

Extra Tidbit: Somebody get to work building James Cameron a Scrooge McDuck style Money Bin.

how off wasn't i when i estimated this film to score around $220-250 million... i didn't perticularly like the film, but still congrats to cameron.

still wondering though, with the kind of risky projects he's making: how much of the profits he winds up getting? anyone knows? both for titanic and now this, he must be getting notes from his bank saying his account is "full".

I'm sick of hearing about adjusted inflation and 3d ticket prices. None of that shit matters. All that matters is that it made the cash. You can adjust Gone with the Wind all day long but at the end of the day, it did not make 2 billion smackaroos.

...but Avatar did.

Im not in love with Avatar, but I enjoyed it. And the argument about how generic it is is getting old. We all love movies that just look like 300 others. As a matter of fact, most people on this site are drooling over The Expendables. Yet, it will look like nothing original. Cant you haters find a reel argument ?

Awesome

Domestically, internationally, globally number one, and still going strong.
Intersting to note, Cameron not only has the one and two ranked films, but does so but 700+ million bucks! From RotK to Titanic it's 700 million dollars! That's huge, that's an entire 'blockbuster' film! And Avatar will be well over BILLION dollars ahead of RotK when all is said and done (hell it basically is a billion ahead of it now). Amazing.
If it hasn't changed the game technically (it has) it certainly has in

If it hasn't changed the game technically (it has) it certainly has in terms of what is possible with a film at the box office.
Yes inflation effects it, but as I've written many times, so does the competition new films face that older ones didn't. Not far to compare films from different times without included the competition factors as well.
But yeah, we've had a new star Wars Trilogy, Harry potter, LotR's and everything else and nothing came close to Titanic. Then Cameron returns and blitzes Titanic with Avatar. Quite amazing.
I don't care if you hate the guy or his films, but you have to admire that, especially considering how much shit he took for both Titanic and Avatar before their respective releases.
Man, the 'I told you so' cookies at Camerons house must taste AWESOME!

I can't believe Titanic was dethroned. I honestly didn't see that happening for another 20+ years, if ever. I thought if any movie could top Titanic, it would be a Harry Potter or Batman or Star Wars-related movie, not a non-sequel Sci-fi movie with no big name actors. Despite its flaws, Avatar was just a great movie. Sorry, haters. the public has spoken.

Another thing

Wasn't this movie like the most pirated when it came out at the time too? To have the most pirated movie yet have it break every box office record is impressive.

Congratulations Avatar! If anything, cracking a box office-record in this day and age, with so many entertainment options for people to spend their money on, I think that is a much bigger feat than nickel and diming the achievement with inflation and 3D factoring. This is 2010 - an era when they thought this type of record couldn't be broken because of how dilluted the film market is and how many other options there are for people to spend their entertainment dollars on.

if you bring up inflation, it doesn't make you smart, it makes you a serious f-in douchebag for assuming you are the only who knows what inflation is.

Congrats

Seems like the inflation "experts" are still sleeping but congrats to James Cameron and everyone that worked on the movie!

I don't know if I'll enjoy Avatar or not when I see it, but this is still an excellent achievement. I honestly only expected Avatar to make enough money to break even, it's hard to believe it's become such a phenomenon.
