The AVATAR teaser trailer is here! Scratch that.. It's supposed to be here but the proper links at Apple's trailer page aren't working. UPDATE - Apple has fixed the links and you can click on any of the screenshots below to watch the trailer in HD.

It's weird to comment on this trailer because usually when I see a trailer it's the first impression of that film, never before having seen any footage. But in this case, I've seen a good 16 minutes of the film in 3D. But this is actually pretty well cut together and features a good deal of footage that wasn't in the Comic-Con presentation. I'm sure it'll look much better in 3D and on a giant screen, which is where I hope to see it this weekend. What do YOU think? Strike back below and debate with your fellow schmoes!

I'm sure the 3D experience and technology will be amazing and the only reason I will see it. It looks like a live action Ferngully and disappointing for a James Cameron Five year ordeal. But reworking the trailer might have its advantages but for now, it seems to childish.

Trailer doesn't do it justice.
I was pretty underwhelmed by the trailer - but then I saw the proper 3D 15 mins on Avatar Day and WOW. You just can't advertise this thing in a conventional way on the internet with 2d trailers. You HAVE to see it in 3D in the cinema to do it justice. Which is going to be a wee bit of a problem for the marketing bods...

I really hope the movie is more interesting than the preview (yes, I saw the 16-minute preview, it's just as underwhelming, IMHO). It's not bad, it just looks a little cliched. The whole "alien-as-aboriginal" is overused. At least District 9 didn't make the aliens speak English.

Well, I like it. I didn't at first...wasn't what I was expecting. But I re-watched it in 720p and it looked pretty damn good. I'm sold.

I wonder if this is the land Mystique and Nightcrawler come from... no but, seroiusly, this looks visually awsome, kind of reminds me of Planet of the Apes for some reason.

WoW Cinematic Trailer
Honestly this reminded me of the World of Warcraft cinematic trailer, as the character design is very close to the night elves. I will be seeing this movie but I just do not think it will live up to the hype. But I will reserve judgment until after I actually see it.

last I checked, the concepts and designs of the movie are still pretty clear in the 2d trailer, and that is what is being criticized. where exactly has anyone criticized the 3d fx? the movie looks like Star Wars, with cgi worlds, elastic cgi aliens, cgi technology. there's nothing in the trailer that makes the movie look even remotely interesting. oof, another movie about cgi aliens, I'm in...

Seen 17 min
Just came back from a showing of 17 min of avatar on the biggest 3D IMAX screen in the world here in Oslo, Norway. It was the best i have ever seen in 3D. It's like an over the top animation movie. Feels a bit like watching a video game. The avatars remind me of Doug Jones as Abe Sapien in Hellboy. The graphics are ground breaking, but im a bitt sceptical to the love story in the film!!!

You have to understand that the reason some people are "hating" or dissapointed by it is because of what was said. We've been told the last 2-3 years that this will be the mother of all sci-fi movies and bring technology and special effects to the next level.



Fuck, Spielberg said this movie will do what sound did for silent pictures and color did for black and white.

You know what?
It'll be funny when Neill's film turns out to be better than Cameron's overall, and for ONE TENTH of the budget. It would actually bring D9 up to my top five sci-fi films ever.. Just for THAT. (Being able to do that would be groundbreaking in itself.)

I think that the effects look pretty silly...and the main reason for this is the way that Cameron has been building this film up. Dont say for ten years that this film will contain the most groundbreaking special effects ever put on film and then release footage like that. If Cameron wouldn't had said anything I think I would like the effects better. I have no respect for a director who is so...

A movie should build up hype based on the actual movie...not a blowhard director tooting his own horn every five minutes. If you want to see how a good movie builds up hype take a look at District 9. I never even heard of that movie till the first trailer. That movie simply build up hype based on the fact that it was an amazing movie not because the director was bragging about it all the time.

That trailer looks fantastic to me! The effects (which I'm sure aren't the completely finished effects) Look great to me! I Wasn't one who was too excited see this movie but now...holy s#*t! I haven't seen a movie that has completely blown me away since Dark Knight. If anyone can do it Cameron can. Hopefully it's lives up to the hype.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within Flashbacks
I know I'm going to start a geek war with this but, I've seen this type of trailer for this type of movie before. It look like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, which is one of the worst movies i have ever seen. I know people out there like that hunk of crap but i hate it! its one of three movies in my life I've walked out of theaters on. And its the only moive I've ever demanded my money...

Back from IMAX screening in JAPAN!
I have to say that Im finding myself TRYING to like this movie more than I do so far. Even after the scenes I just saw at the IMAX Im not quiet sold yet. Dont get me wrong the effects are great and I like the story idea but Im honestly not finding anything really special from what Ive seen so far. Especiallly when you think about all of the amazing and crazy creature and world designs we have...

Dont get me wrong the effects are great and I like the story idea but Im honestly not finding anything really special from what Ive seen so far. It all seams done before. I want to feel like Im in another world and really relate to the characters. I just felt thrown into a few Jarassic park action scenes and thats about it. Im not giving up on this yet I think the movie could still be amazing when we finally get to see the full thing in December but we'll have to see. After all this is just a small teaser to get us excited!

This looked sensational and everything that an important film should be.I was watching poetry at work in visual form.Maybe the CGI wasn't ground breaking but it's pretty damn good and i think everyone is missing the point of this teaser.This will primarily be 1st about emotion not just special effects.The cast can only take u so far so everyone needs to lighten...

BEOWULF 20XX ... maybe it's just expectations (there weren't any) but this was kind of a letdown. I will still see it and I bet it will be awesome, especially in a theatre and in 3D. Fingers crossed

After all the hype i was expecting something revolutionary. Instead I got what looks like any trailer for a video game these days.

The movie looks spectacular. Epic. This trailer already has a better story than T4, Star Trek, & Transformers 2 combined; and this trailer only had one line of dialog.

in that trailer impressed me. The blue things are absolutely awful, just awful. Not big on the cast of this movie either. When I'm most excited about the doufus from Dodgeball, you know something is wrong.

This looks like the elements of Matrix reloaded, elements of the new Star Wars trilogy, elements of Waterworld, and some stupid looking blue people.

The film looks great. CGI isn't flawless, but it all looks so damn beautiful I don't care.



Also, all the haters were going to hate no matter what. Remember when all these same haters said long ago "if the effects are not the greatest thing ever then I'll hate it.". That's the hater mentality for you.

It does look like beowolf. Nothing really great, the graphics in Halo 3 seemed better then this. I love how the hype for this movie has turned people into robots. Fox new all they had to do was keep this in secrecy and let the hype build. Then people with no spines would automatically love it without seeing anything, then when they saw bland run of the mill stuff they'd have no choice because...

There is certainly a dramatic story there, but let's hope Mr. C. can introduce some nuance and not sledgehammer us with a trite morality tale.

Like i said, the aliens in District 9, being complete CGI, looks way WAY WAY better than these Navi people... if you don't agree then your just on Cameron's balls... I'm going to give it the benefit of doubt though, hopefully this will look better in 3-D or I-Max, and hopefully they polish the NAvi up a little

Why would anyone be expecting photo realistic CGI on a movie that's been in production for quite some time? Every movie now has CGI. Avatar wasn't going to suddenly change CGI from, "Great" in Transformers 2 to "What? That was CGI?! NO FRIGGIN WAY THAT WASN'T REAL!" CGI.



Plus, beyond the CGI complaint there wasn't one negative thing about that trailer.

It doesn't look as real as I would have imagined, but it's also a teaser trailer from a movie in post-production. Everything else looks incredibly epic. I already saw such a wide range of emotion from CGI characters before I've even sat down and transported myself into their world through this movie. I can't wait!

While they do look stunning, what we've seen, I believe, isn't what most people had imagined. As I said in my post, I think a lot were expecting to see something to rival Gollum (a truly remarkable photo-realistic character), especially considering Cameron said that was what convinced him he could pull off Avatar, and what we've been shown isn't that. Though I am hoping it's merely a matter of them polishing them up before opening day.

If they're bitching about the movie in general, then I agree with you, particularly because it's only a teaser and have very little to go on.

Two ways this will be game changing. Either it's going to tank horribly, no one will try anything like this for a really long time, and Cameron will go back to documentaries. Or, it'll blow everyone away and Cameron will beat his own box office record. Based on the teaser, and all the hype and talk about how revolutionary this will be, I'd say it's swinging more in favor of the former. But who knows, maybe it'll look better when it comes out.



All that said, I did enjoy the trailer, and it's James Cameron so I'll definitely check it out. But I think if they hadn't hyped this up so much it'd be a lot more well-received.

all the haters only have themselves to blame for the overhype. JC only said that the technology for the motion capture was groundbreaking. He never once pushed "photoreal" at the public. That was just fanboys dreaming. And i dont care what you say, a few of those closeups of the Na'vi faces are pretty fucking incredible.

ehhhhh........... hopefully the plot is good. The setting and backdrops look beautiful, but the CGI just looks kinda funny to me. I'm sure I'll still see it, and hopefully more trailers will be released that make it look better.

If this is what the big deal is all about then I think they failed. It's great CG but it's obviously cg. I think Final Fantasy the movie may have looked more real.

Not sure why they've been treating this like holy grail of film making. The effects looked great in some scenes but looked like pixar presents an adult Fern Gully the next. I'm sure it'll be great, just not the groundbreaking blockbuster to end all blockbusters that the people behind it have made it up to be.

I hear that 95% of this movie is done in CG (including the human characters). This is a huge feat for CGI, I'm very impressed with this trailer. James Cameron truly is the man.

Awesome SFX, however, the blue "people" themselves look too CGI'y in certain scenes. That might bug me a bit, but c'mon...it's James Cameron. And insane action. You know I'm there. I'd give the trailer a very high 8.

Wasn't sure when i first looked at the lower quality over at msn on my computer, a bit over-hyped here also :) But then I took the high resolution at apple and watched it through my TV and it sure looked sweeeeeeet.

I think if the hype had not been sooo huge just for this trailer, people would be flipping out about how cool it looks...but the over-hype (mostly Cameron's fault) for this trailer and the negative reactions I'm reading have me wondering, what the hell did you think it was going to look like?

kdraines is right on the money about the misplaced hype. This looks pretty, sure, but I'm still not convinced- especially by the tag "From the director of Titanic". I only liked the Terminator films and Aliens. Wolfman looks hells-a-more interesting. :)

Yup, that's CGI all right. And saying it will look better in 3D is a cop-out (only bad movies are truly enhanced by 3D. It detracts from good movies).

How, exactly, does it look "retarded"? That's a very... ambiguous statement and not very precise or educational.

Cameron, himself, has been interviewing for the film during the last four years and been preparing us for it for the better part of the last decade. With such comments and films like Aliens and T 1&2 in his resume, it's not hard to see where the hype is steaming from.

Saw the trailer 1080p and I'm impressed. While the characters look obviously fake they look convincing and not CG even though they are. I'll definitely be seeing more.

Cameron is yet to dissapoint me but the creatures look like Star Wars CGI. It felt a bit Disney for me. The planet very similar to Chewie home in SW:ROTS.

My teaser review
i thought that the teaser was a great one. it told a story without any dialouge. i thought the REAL-D looked amazing. sure the flying dragons looked like your normal CGI creatures but they looked good especially in the scene where the humans and the Na'vi are fighting in mid-air. the Avatars in my opinion looked real. if you freeze frame the scenes with them in it i believe that they look real....

That said, it's James Cameron, which should be enough capital for anyone to be found sitting in a theater on opening day. I know I'll be there. This teaser not only met but exceeded my expectations in every regard. This is what sci-fi should be. Grand and epic ideas coming to life. All I've gotta say is... Thank the f***ing Gods that someone like Michael Bay isn't in charge of proceedings.

I will definately go see Avatar but to be honest i don't know whether it will live up to all the hype or for that matter make over what it has already spent in producing the film. Regardless of it looking quite visually stunning I think it will make a fair ammount but not enough to make a large profit.

District 9 is the sci-fi movie to beat right now, and from what I know about Avatar's story, it doesn't sound as intriguing as D9's was.

I'm disappointed.
Was hoping for something in the lines of "Aliens", bloody and violent, and instead got a PG-13 "Episode II, cgi-creatures with wars for children" vibe.

I really, really, REALLY hope to be wrong come December.

Beautiful CGI rendering! The CGI will look different when you see it on a movie screen as opposed to a computer monitor. This is some of the most gorgeous CG animation I've ever seen. And yes, it will revolutionize motion pictures because nothing on this scale has ever been done before. Imagine everything you saw in the trailer but in true 3D.

Look different on the big screen? That's what they said about "The Phantom Menace" and "Hulk."

Turned out not to be true.

This looks terrible.
Cheesy video game CGI, a cliched man vs. nature storyline, and it all just looks like an episode of the Clone Wars. And this is what's meant to revolutionize motion pictures?
