Avatar's Stephen Lang offered role of Khalar Singh in Conan

03.03.2010

Even though he was bordering on a caricature of the uber-military hard ass, I thought Stephen Lang's turn in AVATAR as Col. Quaritch was one of the highlights of the film. And it appears someone else thought that too, as according to Latino Review, Lang has been offered the main villainous role in CONAN, Khalar Singh.

Not familiar with Conan lore? Here’s the official description of the role that went out in the fall:

Khalar Singh is in his 40s to 50s, Asian or Middle Eastern, Central Asian, Mongol, Turkish, or Persian, open to all ethnicities; commanding in size and manner, a warlord and formidable warrior, brilliant, cruel, weathered and tanned by the many campaigns he has waged and won. He is driven in his quest to find the Queen of Acheron and has been building an empire to do so.

His goal is to find the Queen whose blood will bring life to the demonic minions of Acheron while making himself king of this hellish power. With this power, Khalar will protect his legacy against the onslaught of master sorcerer, Thoth-Amon so that his weak son, Fariq may rule after his death. While riding into a Cimmerian village to recruit his old comrade, Corin, his large collection of mercenaries slaughters them to the last soul when Corin refuses to join them. The village’s only survivor was young Conan. When Khalar’s search has finally narrowed to the likely discovery of the queen at a monastery of female monks, he also learns Conan is older and hungry for revenge…

OK, so Lang isn’t exactly Asian, Middle Eastern or Mongol, but stick him in the tanning booth for a few hours and he’ll be good to go. These talks are in no way confirmation he has the part, merely that it’s been offered to him, but I have to imagine it’s likely to end up happening, which would be a very cool addition to the film.

Extra Tidbit: I’d like to see Lang and Stallone duke it out for the title of “Baddest Old Dude Ever.”

This isn't a Conan movie!

I dig Lang. But this "story" of Conan is waaaaay off. Maybe the horrible Arnold movies had Conans family slaughtered but that is not what happens in the real story. The real story is much deeper than some enlsaved kid grows up to be uber-badass and go after the men who killed his family. I'm ok if a film deviates to make it more accessible, but there is a difference between dumbing-down and more accessible.

There wasn't a lot of things I didn't like about Avatar but Lang's character was the main one. Granted, most of it was the writing but I found the character cliched, forgettable and definetely passed "bordering on a caricature". Hopefully, he'll fare better with Singh.

I mostly remember Lang from "Tombstone" and his role as Pickett in "Gettysburgh." Then I remember his small role in "Manhunter," the only time I remember him using a New York accent. I also caught all three of his movies last year, each of which he was terrific.

Michael Mann must like using him. Lang had a large and pivotal role in Mann's highly under-rated cop series "Crime Story." This guy has beefed the hell up over the years. He is also very Gary Oldman-like in his constant appearance changing. Supremely underappreciated actor.

F#ckin ay!

Lang is a brilliant actor and his role as Quaritch was completely badass! It took me a while to realize he was Clanton in "Tombstone"...that's how talented he is. He was even one of the main highlights of "Public Enemies" and he was barely in it.

I'm 100% behind any role he takes cause he's always exceptional and has always been a very cool guy in real life.

To sum up, I fully support him taking this great role!
