Avengers: Infinity War to be the first movie shot entirely with IMAX cameras

05.07.2015

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has been the biggest advocate for the true IMAX aspect ratio, lending movies like INTERSTELLAR and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES a scope that can only be experienced in a real IMAX theater. I figured it was only a matter of time before he took the plunge in directing an entire movie in this format, but it looks like Joe and Anthony Russo will beat him to the punch. Arri has developed a new digital IMAX camera and while select action scenes in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR will utilize this format, the directors have announced that they'll be shooting the entirety of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (both parts) with them as well. This marks the first Hollywood feature-film to be shot in this ratio.

Joe and Anthony Russo on using the IMAX ratio for filming:

The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring ten years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/ARRI Digital camera.

There's two very important things to note regarding the format of INFINITY WAR, and the first is that unlike Christopher Nolan's films, the Russo's will be utilizing a digital medium. The resolution will undoubtedly better than your run-of-the-mill digitally-shot flick, but how it measures up to 70mm is a wait and see. I suppose we'll have a better idea of the look once CIVIL WAR hits screens.

The second and most important is that the Russo's are shooting in 2D. There is no question that Marvel will pull a post-conversion process to have 3D copies of INFINITY WAR out there, but whether or not 2D IMAX will be available is up in the air. This would be a huge loss for those of us who appreciate the 2D presentation and would like enjoy the high resolution without 3D. That's not even a knock against the post-conversion process, but rather a statement on filmgoers who prefer to watch a movie in its native format. J.J. Abrams shot a sequence for THE FORCE AWAKENS in IMAX, and Disney is advertising IMAX 3D (again, post-conversion) for its release, so perhaps we'll know this December whether or not Disney plans to release films shot with IMAX 2D in their native format. I certainly hope so.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART I will open on May 4, 2018, with PART II hitting on May 3, 2019.

Please don't make it 3D. Its such a waste. I have not seen one movie in 3D that I thought was better because of it. You lose so much of the beautiful cinematographer with 3D

This is good news. Should give the film the scope it deserves. I love the MCU but if I had one real complaint it would be that the films feel almost too small for the huge scope of their stories. Almost too ground level at times. Shooting in IMAX should change that.

Would love for it to be filmed in 2D IMAX (70 mm).

Can't describe

I am very happy that marvel is taking the steps to ensure that this movie is as epic as it needs to be. The culmination and conclusion to 10 years of the MCU is Infinty Wars basically it's going to the biggest, meanest, and epic super hero comic book movie of all time. what will marvel do next?!

Please have 2D options

I wish they could film with 70mm IMAX, but I know that makes things very difficult. Hopefully digital will be close to 70mm. However, I refuse to see it in 3D. I just can't stand 3D. The only movie that has benefited from 3D was Avatar (and maybe that's because it was the first true native 3D movie). Neither The Hobbit, Transformers 3, or even Gravity would've been any different in 2D. The Dark Knight Rises and Ghost Protocol were amazing in IMAX. There is so much detail and clarity and

There is so much detail and clarity and there were several scenes where all you can say is "wow". And if there were ever upcoming movies that could benefit from IMAX, it is the upcoming Marvel movies and Star Wars. I have been planning to go see The Force Awakens in IMAX, but if it is only available in 3D I'll just go to a standard 2D screen. The same goes for Civl War and Infinity Wars. Sorry... rant over haha.

How about Marvel studios quit with the cheap post 3D conversions

How is it that Marvel Studios which makes hundreds of millions with each new film release (at least 3 films a year), still goes with the cheap post 3D conversion?
Do you think they'll actually have Thanos in Avengers 3 or will it be another promise broke as it was with Avengers 2?

Anybody want to join my class action lawsuit against Kevin feige for making my balls explode? I do hate that my theater only gives the option to see imax in 3d when that's available though.

Why the shit post conversion?

Marvel's regular post conversion guy, Stereo D, are really bad at what they do. Russo's should had opted for the digital 3D IMAX cameras (ones used in TF4) instead of converting (and significantly downgrading image quality) later. Unless someone grows a sensible mind and calls Prime Focus UK (responsible for Gravity) to do it.

Does it even count if you don't shoot it on IMAX film?

I mean a Digital IMAX camera can really only be an Eleventy-Billion K camera. It's not just the image resolution that people film in IMAX for.

Chris Nolan backed away from this idea cause the camera was loud.....

Unless they have fixed the noise issue with IMAX cameras with the new model, these cameras are known to be extremely loud and make it difficult on the actors to do standard dialogue scenes. That's why up until now, only action scenes have used the format. Maybe they have fixed this issue or maybe they trust their actors to work with the noise like they work with green screens. The other possibility is that the film will be a full 90 minute action sequence.

Noise is only generated by film loaded IMAX cameras.
