Awfully Good Movies: Turbulence (Video)

09.07.2016

Turbulence (1997)

Director: Robert Butler
Stars: Ray Liotta, Lauren Holly, Brendan Gleeson

This weekend, Tom Hanks is piloting a crippled airplane to possible Oscar gold in Clint Eastwood's SULLY, but not even Chelsey Sullenberger can save the plane in this week's Awfully Good Movie: the 1997 thriller TURBULENCE, starring Ray Liotta and Lauren Holly! Take one psychopathic murderer of women, add a spunky flight attendant, put them together on an airplane one fateful Christmas Eve, and you've got yourself some comedy gold. Granted, it's not supposed to be funny, but when you've got a movie with dialogue like "You're gonna be the first cop to die with a plane up his ass!", chances are it's gonna be a bumpy flight. So please get back to your seats, put on your seatbelts, and make sure your funny bones are in their full upright position.

Extra Tidbit: Robert Butler, who directed this flick, is primarily known as a TV director who directed the pilot episodes of STAR TREK and the 1960s BATMAN series. Speaking of BATMAN, the late Shirley Walker composed the score for this flick, and you can thank her for the awesome music from BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, which celebrates its 24th birthday this week. And contrary to the rumor, no, Ray Liotta does not in fact smell like apples. (That one was for all you MST3K fans out there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvEs2_Lsn74)

One of the biggest unintentional comedies I've ever seen

I know this was supposed to be Lauren Holly's big push for the A-list, but her acting in this movie was so atrocious that I don't think her career ever truly recovered. I remember laughing when Ray Liotta was supposed to be torturing her; not the reaction the filmmakers were going for, but that's the reaction I got from her performance.

The only reason that makes this movie watchable - Ray Liotta.
