Awfully Good: Worst of 2016

12.28.2016

The Worst Movies of 2016

I think we as a human society can agree that 2016 was a particularly awful year for a number of reasons. And that misery sadly extended to the movies as well. Here’s my list of the worst of the worst—films were all memorably terrible for their own special reasons.

10. MOTHER’S DAY

Garry Marshall sure had a hard-on for that calendar, didn’t he? The latter part of the director’s career was inexplicably comprised of sappy odes to random holidays that wasted the time of audiences and the talents of some of Hollywood’s top stars. This time around they roped in people like Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts, Jason Sudeikis and Timothy Olyphant for a movie that seemingly exists only to promote matricide. Nobody expected this cinematic greeting card to be good, but considering it’s Marshall’s final film before his death makes it especially heinous.

9. THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT

The first two Divergent films weren’t particularly exciting, but ALLEGIANT was a $100 million dream come true for insomniacs, lacking any real action or plot movement. Granted, lots of boring movies get made each year, but this one deserves a spot on this list for being so dull and unappealing that it effectively killed the franchise before completion. And it takes a special kind of suck for the universe to collectively agree, “Nah, we don’t care how that story ends.”

8. BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

SUICIDE SQUAD had its issues, but BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (I still can’t believe they kept that title) was by far the worst DC movie of 2016. The dreadful script, full of story mechanics and character motivations that make no sense, is enough to sink it, but Zack Snyder’s fundamental misunderstanding of the characters is the movie’s real Kryptonite. I’ve given this multiple chances on home video, and while some of the big action may be enjoyable, the rest of the film will wear out your patience and your fast-forward button.

7. BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE

Zack Snyder wasn’t the only one to desecrate The Dark Knight this year. With the return of the Animated Series’ Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy, THE KILLING JOKE should’ve been a homerun. Instead we got a lackluster adaptation of Alan Moore’s comic tacked on to an unnecessary prologue about the drama of Batman and Batgirl boning, which literally nobody in the world asked to see. Why does 2016 hate the Caped Crusader so much?

6. GODS OF EGYPT

I initially hated this shiny fantasy epic, mainly due to my disappointment with the career of Alex Proyas, who directed THE CROW and DARK CITY. And make no mistake, GOD OF EGYPT is god-awful, but the enjoyably goofy elements and cheesy CGI has grown on me in later viewings. There’s a dumb confidence to how badly this butchers mythology and a swagger to the hammy performances by Gerard Butler and Co. that it’s slowly bordering on entertaining. But still 100% a bad movie.

5. NINE LIVES

Kevin Spacey as a cat. ‘Nuff said.

4. COLLATERAL BEAUTY

Don’t they show movies in advance to test audiences? Did they skip that step with COLLATERAL BEAUTY? Because I can’t believe any human eyes were actually exposed to this wrong-headed, faux-inspiring drama before the studio decided to release it. For a film about miracles, the only thing miraculous is how it manages to simultaneously be stupid, saccharine, and spiteful, with not one but two awful twists. And this movie has Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren and Keira Knightley for God’s sake! Does Will Smith have some sort of British blackmail system set up?

3. YOGA HOSERS

While COP OUT, RED STATE and TUSK weren’t great, at least you could see what Kevin Smith was going for by making them. With YOGA HOSERS I have no clue what Smith was trying to do, other than give his daughter and Lily-Rose Depp their own vanity project. Clearly, I enjoy a good “dumb movie,” but this story of Nazi bratwurst and Canadian jokes is stupid beyond legally permissible levels.

2. THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY

I will probably do a full column on this movie at some point in the future, because Sacha Baron-Cohen truly took things to a new level here. THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY was created with the sole purpose of embarrassing Mark Strong for life. From having his scrotum sucked to having to a rocket shoved up his ass, the sheer number of jaw-dropping things the poor actor was forced to do for a cheap laugh is honestly kind of amazing. There’s specifically a scene involving an elephant in this movie that will haunt your dreams forever.

1. SEQUELS NOBODY WANTED

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, ZOOLANDER 2, BAD SANTA 2, ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, THE HUNTSMAN: WINTERS WAR, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON 2... If there’s one thing that defined 2016 for cinema, it was the unending glut of follow-ups to movies that nobody asked for. Thankfully, pretty much all were disappointments at the box office and unloved by the few who turned out to see them. So if there’s one hope going into the new year, it’s that maybe, just maybe, Hollywood learned their lesson about leaving well-enough alone.

Probably not.

Happy 2017 to everyone and thanks for reading this year!

Pfff`

BvS being on this list, but Independence Day 2/Huntsman Winter's War/Nine Lives only getting passable mentions is a joke. I swear the hate BvS gets is hyperbolic. The warehouse fight scene alone was worth it.

My biggest disappointment would be Batman: The Killing Joke. Like you said, it should have been a homerun but it just sucks. However, I enjoyed The Brothers Grimsby a lot.

BvS Should not be on this list

I don't care how upset you were for whatever reason with this movie. The action was awesome and the story wasn't even remotely that bad. I am really struggling to understand how people can honestly "look me in the eye" and say this is one of the worst films of 2016.

BvS??

I agree with nearly everything here with the exception of BvS. It sure isn't going to win any awards but had enough going for it to not be listed here. I personally liked it quite a bit.

Batman: The Killing Joke was the most disappointing for me

How do you screw up a Batman film based on the killing joke and voiced with the Animated Series cast? Well, for starters you have Batman f#%* Bat-Girl and then you pay for the shittiest animation around to make this look like a fan film.

Most of the DC animated movies have stuck to that animation style, regardless of their budget, to look like the animated series from the 90s (specially BATMAN). I'm not defending them; just explaining their reasoning.

I agree with this list 100%.

Are movies still a subjective art form? From the comments below, there's right movies and wrong movies to be on this list? Granted, I did think BvS sucked and not simply because it was a "disapointment"

Hi, Mr. Bandwagon!

BvS? Come on! Definitely doesn't belong on a best list, but not a worst either. You have let disappointment cloud your objectivity, and you didn't specify which version you are talking about, which is now a requirement when talking about that movie. That GIGANTIC oversight alone makes me wonder how long you will be here.

He said he's given it multiple chances on home video. He most likely has seen both version and compared them.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice should be nowhere near this list. I get that people didn't like it as much as they thought they would have, but it doesn't deserve to be ranked amongst the year's worst.

If anything, the worst comic book film of the year was Doctor Strange. Except for a few cool scenes and some good characters moments, the story was bland and very disappointing in terms of Strange's transition from broken surgeon to sorcerer supreme and the only saving grace was Swinton

Awesome movie. Just like Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ant Man, I love how different, and offbeat Doctor Strange was compared to the rest of the MCU films at this point. With not really knowing too much about Doctor Strange, it was fun to see this as an origins film and to see his backstory as arrogant surgeon to sorcerer supreme. And the film had some of the best visual sequences and action scenes

And the film had some of the best visual sequences and action scenes (especially the ending fight) that Marvel has had so far in any of their films. It'll be really interesting to see how Strange's powers progress stronger going forward for Infinity Wars.

Loved the film, story, visuals, and cast. Cumberbatch, Tilda, and McAdams were all excellent in their roles as Stephen (even though his voice rememinded me of Hugh Laurie's from House MD), the Acient One, and Christine. Everyone had great chemistry with one another and really showed with how much the film was and turned out to be. Definitely one of Marvel's better films based on the pure creativeness behind it alone.

since we're on the topic of letdown movies.....

how about Star Wars episode 7?............. not a good movie at all, not by any means. just more of the same much like fast n furious or another transformers. nobody can make an arguement that star wars ep7 was better than BvS or Suicide Squad.

pretty accurate list

I'd say the movies mentioned are fair bait. some were just such huge letdowns but not necessarily terrible movies. BvS was a huge letdown but I've watched it a few times. lets be honest batman vs superman i don't know if thast how the justice league is formed in the comics and they're going by the source material but is a dumb concept in my opinion. the villian doomsday was dumb. the jury is still out on jesse eisenberg's lex luthor. All the divergent movies are terrible. the kevin spacey cat

I can think of a ton much much worse movies that came out this year but i think where the writer went wrong was this wasn't a list of the worst movies of the year, just ones that were the biggest letdowns. can't fault julia roberts for doing mothers day. I read somewhere she made something like 3 million for 4 days work. i'd do it and a lot worse for that kind of money

1/10 - 9 LIVES; ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS*; MOTHER'S DAY.
3/10 - ALLEGIANT; GODS OF EGYPT; THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR; INDEPENDENCE DAY 2.
5/10 - BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE; CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON 2; ZOOLANDER NO. 2.
6/10 - BATMAN V SUPERMAN.

*While it's bad, I'm not sure if it belongs in that group. There's a book sequel (which this is based on), so it made sense to make a movie sequel (even though the 2010 one was technically already a sequel).

I wouldn't really consider BvS an awful movie but it was a let down. Which is ironic because I think it gave us the best on screen Batman yet (Bale is still my favorite Bruce). I also though Brothers Grimsby was hilarious. It was what it set out to be and was much better that Cohens last effort with Dictator. The unwanted sequels is right on. I guess I can see why they made an Alice sequel with all the money the first one made, but I feel like the reason the first made so much was because it
