Ayer's Last Man

03.10.2009
David Ayer (HARSH TIMES) has signed on to write and direct LAST MAN for 20th Century Fox. In the movie, a hardened captain assigned to protect an outpost on a distant planet, must rally a selection of young American solders against an alien race. Ayer will commence work on the project once he is finished working on DEEP SEA COWBOYS, a thriller about a salvage crew trying to save a sinking Japanese cargo ship.

Maybe it's just me but this sounds a little like AVATAR, which would be pretty much the last thing you wanted to imitate. Early projections have the first weekend gross somewhere between sixty and seventy trillion dollars. More people will see that movie than have seen trees. If I'm wrong and it's totally different, then I'm all for it though. Ayer is cool in my book.
Extra Tidbit: Ayer's favorite movie is APOCALYPSE NOW.

Hmm. Ayer is known for his gritty, urban, drama/action flicks so I'm not sure about him writing AND directing an Alien action movie OR directing a drama/action about saving a sinking boat. Don't get me wrong, the premise for BOTH of these seem cool, but I'm not sold on Ayer.

On the flip side though, it is nice to see him doing projects outside of his normal material. I give the man credit for expanding his horizons. I wish him all the luck with both projects and hopefully the turn out great.

I read the article Deep Sea Cowboys is based on. Should be cool, but the title is stupid. It should be called Cougar Ace - the name of the sinking ship.

I see AVATAR being a big movie, but not a BIG movie, I'm sure it'll gross a ton, but I don't see it getting close to Dark Knight or Titanic status. Maybe 300 million, but I think that's a stretch...
