In 1992, Harvey Keitel starred in a movie called BAD LIEUTENANT. Now in 2009, it’s being remade with Nic Cage and Val Kilmer carrying the title BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS.
Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure/displeasure of seeing the original film. What I do know is that Keitel is a badass and hard to replicate, especially with Nic Cage. Now, don’t get me wrong, Cage is a fine actor when given the right material but something happened to how I thought of him after SNAKE EYES. It’s also being directed by Werner Herzog, who helmed RESCUE DAWN with Christian Bale.
I just don’t know if this will be well received by the masses. The only relevant popular actors in this are Cage (if you still buy that) and Eva Mendes. Honestly, it more or less seems like a Blockbuster exclusive movie. Trust me, I used to work there and it held a lot of Val Kilmer B films.
