Bale chases Depp

Christian Bale? Johnny Depp?? In the same movie?! Somewhere our dear JoBlo is having heart palpitations. It is indeed true with Christian Bale signing on to co-star with Johnny Depp in the upcoming crime drama PUBLIC ENEMIES. While I wish it were a biopic on hip-hop pioneers Chuck D, Flavor Flav and Terminator X (with Bale starring as Flav), that’s sadly not the case. Michael Mann is directing the film based on the book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34” by Brian Burrough (Mann adapted the script himself). In the film Depp will star as John Dillinger with Bale playing Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent who led the manhunt that tracked down the former Public Enemy #1. Does Bale like bringing bad guys to justice or what? With this, 3:10 TO YUMA and the BATMAN series, the guy certainly likes his justice. Depp had been looking to film SHANTARAM after SWEENEY TODD but that film was one of the first strike causalities. Mann had been working on EDWIN A. SALT, a film he felt needed drastic rewrites and decided to move onto ENEMIES with Depp. Bale will take some time off from his grueling DARK KNIGHT shoot and begin work on ENEMIES in March.
