Bardem off Wall Street

07.23.2009

Oliver Stone was looking for someone who could out-evil Gordon Gekko in the WALL STREET sequel, but that financial demon will NOT be Javier Bardem.

According to Forbes, the simmering Spaniard won't be providing his chilling delivery to the project due to scheduling difficulties and other offers. Bardem was being sought to play a villainous hedge fund manager (which amusingly implies there are some who are not villains).

Shia LaBeouf is still on the sequel (tentatively titled MONEY NEVER SLEEPS) as a young trader who seeks revenge advice from his fiancee's dad: Michael Douglas' infamous remorseless greed-lover, now released from prison for his past plunders.

A replacement bad guy has not been announced yet. Bardem is apparently instead making the Julia Roberts romance EAT, PRAY, LOVE, which seems significantly less interesting. Meanwhile, the real-life monetary meltdown is apparently still stuck in the second act. Wonder how it'll end...

I have your answer

Bardem had a HUGE body of work before NCFOM, and is continuing to show range. Just because he plays a serial killer to delight people in one film, means he's going to change his career on a dime to please fan boys who are waiting for him to be the next bad guy in Batman 3, or some nonsense like that. You think you can offer better - go make a bid to be his agent.

i have a question...

what the hell is up with Bardem? After his amazing role in No Country For Old Men, he has apparently decided to do a bunch of crappy romantic and romantic comedy movies that offer nothing.

Seriously, what the hell, Javier?

Well, I was looking forward to Bardem essentially filling the shoes of Terence Stamp's part, in what sounded like an idea that might actually work, but eh, maybe it's for the best.

Perfect opportunity

to cast Jonathan Frakes as the bad guy. That, or Terry Crews. Not even sure why they would waste time with Bardem - Horatio Sanz is another great choice.

...

i think Ben Foster would have been a better choice then Shia. i also think Gerard Butler would be an interesting replacement for Bardem.
