Barrowman wants CapAm

07.29.2009

Now that Chris Hemsworth has been cast in THOR, the only real missing piece of Marvel’s AVENGERS puzzle is red, white and blue all over. CAPTAIN AMERICA is slated for a summer 2011 release, but almost nothing about the project is for certain at this point.

It’s probably for that reason that “Torchwood” star John Barrowman saw Comic Con as good a time as any to toss his hat into the ring. Addressing the crowd at the “Torchwood” panel Barrowman said, "You know what I want to play? Captain America.” But over the cheers of his fans he added, “So it won’t happen.” That’s the spirit!

I just finished watching Barrowman perform adequately in the “Torchwood: Children of Earth” miniseries on the BBC, and though I suppose he’s a decent enough actor and could look the part with a blonde dye job, I don’t see him in the role, and I don’t think “Torchwood” has enough petition-signing fans to get him the part. I mean, if “Firefly” nuts couldn’t get Nathan Fillion GREEN LANTERN…

However, I do agree with the idea that the Cap’n should NOT be a premium A-list face a-la-Pitt or DiCaprio as has been suggested previously. Hemsworth as Thor was a good call (though Skarsgard was clearly better) while conversely, I think Ryan Reynolds is the wrong pick for Green Lantern.

Extra Tidbit: If not Barrowman, then who? Hell, I could almost see LANTERN reject Bradley Cooper in the stars and stripes.

Skarsgard!!!!!

I want Skarsgard as Cap. I know, I know, that tiny bit of jingoistic asshole in me demands that Steve Rogers be played by an American, but I was sold on Skarsgard as Captain America after just the first two episodes of Generation Kill.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again

Sam Worthington for an more mature Cap, or Jensen Ackles for a younger Cap. Both have the square jaw and the acting chops to make it a decent role.

I don't know why I didn't think of it before but yeah, Sam Worthington as the Cap really does fit!

Choosing Barrowman would almost make up for the loss of Fillion or Skarsgard which both would have been perfect.

NPH for Ant Man!!

Apollo?

what BSG's Jamie Bamber? Great actor, not too well known, young, good looking, in shape...I'd say his Apollo would translate to a good Steve Rogers/Cap. What do you guys think?

I always thought Adam Baldwin would be a good pick for Capt, not an A-lister but also not a no-name actor.

I've been saying this for a while now...

Basically, I want Paul Walker for Cap Am. If he wants to be taken seriously, why not a period piece...and comic book movie to add in the extra fun. He's an excellent actor (Watch Running Scared and tell me otherwise) and he's young enough to handle a franchise. On that note...although Fast n Furious was good...let it die...PLEASE?!

After watching The Spirit back in Feb. I am pulling for Gabriel Macht. He's got what it takes, and he's from the USA. I've been debating this for awhile now, and was get set for Brad Pitt, but after seeing The Spirit, I'm for Gabriel.

I'm the last guy you'd find waving around a flag chanting "AMERICUH", but I too think Captain America should be played by an American. I don't know who, though. There are so few actually good American actors that fit the part..

Michael Pitt!?

WTF? I think there's sufficient typecasting from him playing psychos and murderers to prevent that casting disaster.

He actually doesn't look as old as he is at all. I still don't think I'd like this just because it'd pull him away from Torchwood. The new mini-series kicked ass.

'Children of Earth' was great. It was quite daring too. But Barrowman may have the handsome look (and man he has a great sense of humor), he doesn't strike me as CA. Though truth be told, I find CA to be quite boring, so perhaps it's best he decided not to do it.

@big bri

I'm not gunning for Skarsgard for this role - but he's great in True Blood, and Generation Kill (definitely NOT a prettyboy in the latter). The reason why you aren't familiar with his work is that most of his resume is in foreign work until recently.

I agree that 23 is probably too young, unless they find somebody superlative with enough gravitas to pull it off.

Sorry for the double post earlier. Really embarassing. In reply to Project 86: Cap might be 23 in the comic but casting an actor that young in the movie would be a disaster.

Not feeling it and why is everyone always bringing up Alexander Skarsgard for every superhero role. What has he done that is so great? Cap needs to be played by an actor with gravity and toughness and this pretty boy aint it.

Hmmm...

I don't know anything about Barrowman, so I won't judge him from the pretty-boy photo on this page. He could work as well as anyone, I reckon. I'm a big fan of the character, so I hope this film goes well, but I think the story and look of the film will be the real tough part, at least as much as the casting. Cap's a tough hero to translate into real-life without making him campy. I agree that Cap should be played by a relative unknown, or at least someone off the A-list. Oh, and side note:

Terrible, *terrible* actor, they really should stop inserting him into 'Doctor Who' via Supermarionation.

Here's My Cast

I've said it before, but I really think Josh Duhamel would be perfect. Of course when I first brought this up he was a little younger, but he's pretty dang youthful looking for being in his mid thirties. He's also a pretty awesome actor who's had some decent esposure through "Las Vegas" and "Transformers" and is poised for a breakout role.

My Cast (Sorry it's in one giant block, can't seem to space it out):
JOSH DUHAMEL as Steve Rogers/Captain America, PAUL BETTANY as Johann Schmidt/Red

Thomas Jane or Aaron Eckhart. Though both have already been involved with other comic book movies. They're still the two best choices... Eckhart possibly more so.

Doesn't matter that they already did comic book films. Looks at Reynolds. He did Blade Trinity, Wolverine, and is now doing Green Lantern.

VIGGO!!!!!!

There is only one choice: VIGGO MORTENSEN.

Is there any reason why he wouldn't be awesome? No. He's worked with Joe Johnston a few times before (Hidalgo, The Perfect Murder) and he's provide a brilliant foil presence to RDJ's Tony Stark.
Please, somebody, tell me if I ere.

No!! No! No! No!

I said it before and I'll say it again: Goddamn McConaughey! I honestly feel that the man would nail it on all fronts!! Plus, he's of the same age range of Downey Jr and Norton (who hopefully shows up again) and that leaves the younger, more reckless Thor (fuck Ant-Man). This dude isn't even American!! We need the all American boy!! And what's the big deal with Cooper as an action hero? Why does everyone want to see him as the comic book guy?
