Batman V Superman moves release date to March and far from Captain America 3

Aug. 6, 2014by:

The release date of a film plays a huge factor in any film studio's marketing strategy and so it's customary to set a date way ahead of time; the cinematic equivalent to calling "dibs." Shuffling dates around isn't uncommon either, although in the case of May 6, 2016, that particular date saw the release of both BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and CAPTAIN AMERICA 3. Those are two VERY big films and neither DC nor Marvel looked as though they had any intention of backing down. Well, DC just flinched. BATMAN V SUPERMAN will now hit theaters almost two months earlier, on March 25, 2016. More importantly, it will be well out of the way of Marvel's first Avenger.

This brings the current DC release schedule to the following, as per Deadline:

  • BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE – 03/25/16
  • Untitled DC Film – 08/05/16
  • Untitled DC Film – 06/23/17
  • Untitled DC Film – 11/17/17
  • Untitled DC Film – 03/23/18
  • Untitled DC Film – 07/27/18
  • Untitled WB Event Film – 11/16/18
  • Untitled DC Film – 04/05/19
  • Untitled DC Film – 06/14/19
  • Untitled DC Film – 04/03/20
  • Untitled DC Film – 06/19/20
  • Untitled WB Event Film – 11/20/20

Currently slated for March 26 is BEVERLY HILLS COP 4, which doesn't appear to be any threat to DC's heroes. Perhaps more importantly is the following month of April, which is currently slated with releases like CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG, THE BEST MAN WEDDING and Frank Darabont's THE HUNTSMAN. If I was a betting man, I'd say none of those will do any damage to BATMAN V SUPERMAN's box office prowess. As far as fans are concerned, we don't have to wait as long, so it looks to be a win/win for everyone involved.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will now be released on March 25, 2016.

I kind of knew that DC would back down on that date. I'm happy about it because we get to see it earlier. It won't have any competition. And if if turns out to be good then it will make a killing, which DC needs. Badly.

This is really good news because we now get Batman v Superman almost 5 weeks early. March is definitely transforming itself into the new May. It's really turning into a great month for big movies. Warcraft, Batman v Superman, Fast and Furious 7, Insurgent, The Wolverine 2, The Transporter 4, Cinderella, and Chappie are all future March releases.

@KenMasters - Looking forward to Warcraft and the most recent FF movies have been great fun in my opinion. However much Man of Steel annoyed me, I'm at the very least insanely curiously to see how it plays out. Personally I think they may not have the right talent behind the camera but I have to at least give it a try. Yes, March is becoming a good month.

Biggest March opening ever, methinks

Although I'm not excited for this, I think it was a very smart move and I support the idea of a "big huge blockbuster" releasing in March. I think a movie can be a massive success at any time of the year, not just summer and [link]

Snyder is notorious for releasing films in March

I'm glad DC moved their release date, it's only common courtesy. What's more interesting to me is the other films DC intends on releasing.

Perfectly fine with me. It would have been dumb to have both franchises go up against one another only to spilt each other's profit.

Now once Batman vs Superman comes and goes, we'll have Captain America 3 to look forward to.

This could work.
I think the past years huge May releases have shown it's the films not the summer that attract audiences.
Now we can start speculating on what the heck they're going to release in August.

Green Lantern 2!

Either has to be a sequel or reimagining to Green Lantern, an origins Flash film, or a origins Wonder Woman film. It's not like it's going to be Man of Steel 2 or a Batman film (it would seem to soon in my opinion after Batman vs Superman....at least in my opinion).

Or perhaps it's the Shazam film with Dwayne Johnson.

Not sure, but this is what's annoying to me. Secure the release date before they know what they know what the hell they're making. It would have to be in preproduction at least. They're just lifting Marvel's business strategy without taking the time to do what Marvel did. I predict a chunk of these films will flop. Green Lantern already did.....no offense Soloist...

Great News

If i were DC i wouldn't be worried about beating out Cap at the box office, quite sure they would have done that.. Its more about Maximizing a return on your investment, instead of DC fans in one theatre, and Marvel in another.. They get all fan boys in the same screening.

On top of that we get it sooner then we were supposed to!!

I think it wouldve beat Cap anyway too. If for no other reason: Caps been out there a few times already. Batman & Superman have never been in a major movie before. Love or hate it, people will definitely see it either way

You can't go into a movie site that has turned into a 'comic book movie site' and say something like that. That's like going to a Twilight fan site and trying to explain why Twilight is a terrible story. These fanboys can't comprehend a world that exists outside of their dorky obsessions.

But you're right. The theaters are being over saturated with comic book movies, and the average Joe is getting tired of it. Already we are see this happen. What comic book movie this year has crossed

But you're right. The theaters are being over saturated with comic book movies, and the average Joe is getting tired of it. Already we are see this happen. What comic book movie this year has crossed $300million domestically? Batman did that over 20 years ago. Spider-Man & Iron Man both did it. Iron Man 3 did it but burned a lot of people. Man of Steel opened massively huge and should have crossed that mark, but failed to do so. This year nothing's come close. We are going to see interest drop even more in the coming years as more and more superhero films flood the market.

Guardians of the Galaxy dared to be different and it paid off, but it won't cross $300million either.
7:57PM on 08/06/2014
No, this has nothing to do with fanboys not being able to look beyond their own movies. It's just facts: comic book movies make up such a TINY percentage of movies that come out on a year to year basis, and it's ridiculous to try to claim that it's over-saturating the market or anything like that. I'd say dumb, Adam Sandler-type comedies are an "overload" in this industry. I'd say expensive, mindless, offensive blockbusters like Transformers is over-saturating the market.

But comic book/superhero movies? Not quite. As long as they keep making money, they'll continue to be made...just like any other type of movie. And despite some terrible movies (Amazing Spider-Man 2, for example) that lost revenue as a result of their low quality, there are no overt signs of any type of fatigue setting in.

There are far more comic book movies than Sandler-like comedies coming out.

Every year there are around 10 - 15 big event movies that overshadow everything in theaters. From endless trailers and TV commercials, to an over abundance of product tie ins, and just about every other form of marketing, these 10 - 15 films are shoved down our throat every year. In 2017, 8 of these films are Superhero films.

10-15 movies? Again, that's such a minuscule percentage of ALL the movies that come out each year. It just seems so odd to me to try to claim that such a handful of movies under the same category (which, by the way, aren't even the same genre, as Marvel's shown over and over again. That helps comic book movies feel fresh and new and different from each other) is over-saturating the market somehow.

And the only reason these movies feel "shoved down our throat" is because we pay attention to

And the only reason these movies feel "shoved down our throat" is because we pay attention to movies more than the general audience does. We seek out sites like Joblo that covers these movies so much, we seek out every bit of info from Comic-Con, we watch EVERY trailer and dissect every clip. Ask anyone, most people will say that they aren't exactly getting tired of these movies just yet, and that's reflected in how much money these movies continue to rake in.

I guess GOTG opening made them think again about going again CA3. Anyway, that's good news for both the movies. However, I have a feeling that they might not make enough money as a March release.

Smart move by WB/DC. Marvel proved in 2014 that you can still make a ton of money outside the standard summer blockbuster months (I know Guardians is still a "summer" movie, but August use to kind of be an action movie dump off month). Batman/Superman is an "event" film and will be marketed accordingly, so I don't see a spring release opposed to summer hurting their revenue one bit.

The weekends might be good but the weekdays will be lighter. So it might end up making less than a summer release. Marvel's also had an advantage of low bar of success - $250M. Expectations for BVS will be much higher ($400M +) and I am not sure if it can match or exceed expectations

Every single person hating this movie will be there opening night, some even on Thursday lol. That's just how it go's ya know? I find it hilarious that so many of the people on here get SO angry over this movie, genuinely pissed off at DC for not doing EXACTLY what Marvel did lol! "Too many characters for one movie!! This is gonna bomb!" (Where'd I hear that before), "just call it Justice League already!!" "Why can't they just do what Marvel did??!". Just foaming at the mouth dying to hate this

The difference is, Marvel took its time to develop all of its main superheros in their own films first. DC just wants to get to the money shot with out the forplay. Thats going to bite them in the ass.

Earlier the better! and on May 6th, I'll go see this in a theater that's still playing it for a second or third time, because Captain America is insufferable.

Filming in Detroit

Visited the set this afternoon at Sixth and Joseph. Got to see a Metropolis City Bus all smashed up. Also visited the LexCorp set in Pontiac a few weeks ago. I'm a lifelong Batman fan, and this looks to be the Batman film I've been waiting to see my whole life. Can't wait.
