Batman v Superman costume designer reveals some secret costume details

08.18.2015

Getting to create a superhero costume for film, especially one as iconic as the Superman or Batman suit, is the great hope of many a costume designer, so BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE costume designer Michael Wilkinson must be living the dream. Wilkinson not only re-imagined Superman's suit for the new film, but also had the great pleasure of designing new suits for Batman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman.

Michael Wilkinson spoke with People's Choice and offered up some new details on how he's approached putting a fresh spin on two of the most iconic super-suits in the history of film:

We tweaked the Superman suit only slightly from our suit from Man of Steel. We streamlined plus sharpened the details of the costume a little to suit the more earthly (less alien) context of this film. The batsuit is a complete 180 degree turn from the previous film incarnations — our Batman’s power comes from his incredible physical strength and fighting skills, not from armor. The director Zack Snyder wanted him to look as much like the comic book version as possible — to be respectful to the original source. As for the Wonder Woman suit, well she has never been seen in a film before, so there was nothing to compare it to! There is of course the costume from the TV show. Zack wanted our character to be a fierce and intimidating warrior — gritty, battle-scarred and immortal.

Wilkinson, who collaborated with BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE director Zack Snyder every step of the way, spoke of the large amount of research he undertook in the effort to bring a new and original way of portraying both the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel.

To get ready to design the costumes for Batman v Superman, I really did my homework. I immersed myself in the long histories of these iconic characters — Superman [Henry Cavill], Batman [Ben Affleck], and Wonder Woman [Gal Gadot]— I studied how they have been portrayed over the last 75 years on film, on TV, in comic books, graphic novels and video games. I studied what they mean to people, what they stand for, why they are important. I started an exhaustive search for new materials and technologies — original ways of portraying these characters that would be unlike anything audiences have seen before. I wanted the costumes to help make the characters inspirational and relevant to modern audiences.

When BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE is finally released, there will be several small details that the audience likely won't even be aware of, including "kryptonian script subliminally included in the details of the suit" and "ancient Greek script on Wonder Woman’s weapons." Michael Wilkinson mentioned that his favourite detail of the batsuit were the "brass knuckles on the gloves." At least he didn't say anything about subliminal bat-nipples.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens on March 25, 2016.

Please offer your definition of the word 'secret'.
Also I'm getting really sick of 'secret' appearing in countless TV titles, web articles and newspaper headlines. It's the cliched word of the last two years and hugely over used!

Wonder Woman looks like she is filming a damn Iphone game commercial...

I don't see her as powerful and intimidating. She looks like she is afraid to get her hair wet and her outfit dirty. It just reminds me of those horrible Kate Upton commercials. It just comes off as fake and a poor choice for the role.

This movie should have come out yesterday already, been hearing so much about it, that it's hard to believe it's still 7 months away. Especially after such a disappointing summer season, where is a time machine when you need one?

This guy has done his homework, which I find encouraging. The suits for both Supes and Bat look perfect IMO. Like others have said, the mix of modern and classic is spot on. I don't want the pure "original look" of these characters. Like the decades worth of comic book interpretations of these characters, the suits have to evolve with time, and I think Snyder has tapped into that.

lol wrong, we already noticed it in the trailer when Lois touches the S emblem and you can see the kryptonian writing within it.

All of the costumes so far have been spot on and badass (especially Batman). Can't wait to see what this universe's Flash, and Green Lantern will look like.

While the reception to this movie as a whole is somewhat mixed, one thing that can't be faulted IMO is the costume design. To me I loved the Superman costume, it modernized it a little but stayed true to the vision for the character. The Batman one is fucking flawless for me. It is the perfect cross between Jim Lee's costume and Frank Miller Dark Knight Returns where that bat symbol came from. And despite the fact that I HATE Gadot as WW, I do love the costume. Who designed the new Bat symbol is what I'm wondering. It's the worst looking bat symbol I've seen. Just go with the iconic one from the Burton movies, against the yellow background. I know it's just a small detail, but it still bugs me.
Also, it's funny he mentions this batman's strength doesn't come from armor, when the trailer shows him in a medal suit. I get what he means, but it was just a little funny.

His metal armour looks near identical to the comic for the Dark Knight Returns when Batman is in fact older, bigger and better shape to make up for being older and slower. The armour gives him strength to take on Superman, so it makes sense. His everyday Batman costume is, from what I gather, more standard armour but not Nolanverse style body armour.
As for the Bat symbol, I loved the first 2 Burton films, but nothing says "stealth" like a yellow reflective light on your chest. It's dated and

It actually makes sense because this Batman have less armor and more muscle, so the huge bat symbol also works as a plate shield for oncoming bullets. Criminals tend to fixate on the symbol and shoot at that direction, ignoring other parts of the body that are less protected.

Batman imo is perfect. This is the best live action bat suit for me. For superman they need to brighten it up. it was too dark in man of steel and same thing here.
