Batman V Superman on track for $350M global opening weekend plus new TV spot

03.22.2016

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Zack Snyder Ben Affleck Henry Cavill Gal Gadot Banner

The final box office tracking numbers are in for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and the movie is eyeing a worldwide opening weekend of $350 million, with $150 million of that coming from U.S. theaters. If the MAN OF STEEL follow-up does hit those numbers, it would make it the second-best pre-summer and Easter debut ever behind FURIOUS 7's $397.7 million.

A recent report claimed that BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE needs to gross at least $800 million in order to just break even, so it would be off to a decent start if it does earn close to half of that in its first weekend.

But even if the film does end up underperforming slightly or doesn't reach the domestic box office heights of say, Marvel's THE AVENGERS ($623 million) or Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT ($534 million), it's not like Warner Bros. is just going to give up on the DCEU. And although it will be very interesting to see how much it will make in its sophomore outing, I have a feeling that the studio is going to have a big hit on their hands. In other BATMAN V SUPERMAN news, below you'll find the latest TV spot for the soon-to-be-released movie, which features some previously unseen footage.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will hit theaters this Friday.

I don't have much faith in this movie, but to each their own. I didn't like Man of Steel, but I know it certainly has its fans. That being said, if Transformers Age of Extinction can be the lowest domestic grossing Transformers film at $245 million, yet be the highest international grossing one out of the bunch at $858 mill (seriously, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?!), then Batman v Superman should be ok....

Jesus the trolls can't even hold their wad. Some reviews just coming in and they're dying to hate. What has the world come to?

Yup, it's about what I thought it would be

IGN gave it a 6.8. It's pretty bad when a video game website gives a bad review to a comic book movie. I predict the DC fanboys will be silent from here on out.

Wow.....first reviews are in.....

And they are AWFUL!!! Currently at 14% on RT, and other than one reviewer saying it's better than MoS, they seem to agree on the problems with the plot, the tone, and the pacing. DC, maybe it's time you rethought this whole Zack Snyder thing.....

Is the global opening weekend a thing now? If so, is it really far to compare BvS to any movie since it is opening simultaneously in more major countries than any other movie?

No it hasn't. This is the first movie to be released in China same day as domestic release. And China is a massive chunk of the international market.

I doubt I will see this in theaters it just doesn't have a big enough draw for me. But I have to say if this was just a Batman movie I would be there in a heart beat. This new Superman really does nothing for me but the new take on Batman looks great, too bad they have to spoil it with Supes and Twigder Woman.

I call bullshit that this movie needs to make 800 million to break even. That doesn't make any sense

From a former movie exec (player): This movie cost about $500 million to produce and distribute. It needs to make triple that for Zack Snyder to get a new house, quintuple that if Superman wants a second story added to the Fortress of Solitude (FOS). For Batman to get a spoiler on the Batmobile it would need to open in China with at least seventy three billion yuan. You see? Movie math isn't that difficult.

It makes complete sense. It cost $400 million to make and promote. It needs to make back $400 million (plus money they don't report) to break even. The studio gets slightly over 1/2 of the box office gross.

Hence $800 million.

The studios only recoup HALF the box office receipts, the other half goes to the theatres. So if a movie has a budget of 400 million (including marketing costs) it needs to make at least 800 million to break even. Now a lot of marketing costs are recouped from product placements and selling the image to various advertisers. Recouping foreign box office receipts are a whole different story in that its more like a 60/40 split, 40% going to the studios. In china its even worse where the figure

If it doesnt hit that mark, it will need to be a critical hit, as well as pass atleast 800 million to even slightly justify the exanding universe they're interested in creatin.

I posted thid below too. The studios get more than half the ticket sales. The first week, the theater only gets 10% or so of the amount the movie makes per theater. Thats why concession stand prices are so high. The theater has to make money. If it relied on tickets sales, most of them would be out of busniess. of course, the longer the movie is in theaters, the percentage goes up and the more money the theater makes. I could be wrong but i'm pretty sure this is how it works

Your numbers are dated, blsny. The theaters long ago had those figures changed. Now it's closer to a 50% split (depending on where it's being released) and it doesn't change based on how long it's been in the theaters.

We had this discussion when Pacific Rim was struggling to break even. I even had to produce releases from theaters and movie studios backing up the claim. People were freaking out about it not wanting to believe the facts.

Even though the wait and delayed push since Man of Steel has been unbearable to say the least, it looks like it's going to pay off in a grand way for DC and I really hope it does and shatters every expectation because the film looks absolutely epic I'm ever way and aspect and looks like a real, great, dedicated team effort from all involved.

I already have tickets for three showings this weekend (Thursday through Saturday) and I know for a fact I will be seeing it multiple times again after

That break even amount threw me. Really? I just read the article, and it says "With a production cost of at least $250 million and added global marketing costs easily topping $150 million, the movie would have to gross $800 million to recoup its investment, if it were reliant just on box office". Sure, I'm thick and only scored average marks in Maths and English but if I'm reading that right, doesn't 250+150 = 400? Do these people arrive at an estimate and than just double it to be on the

Yeh, may be...just a touch.

Sounds like a good start. I think people are finally allowing themselves to be excited for this. I know I am, I've been cautious about letting my excitement getting out of control. Hopefully this afternoon when the review embargo is lifted we hear more good news. My ticket is bought no matter what but I know that some people will wait to make a final decision depending on the reviews.

Love him or hate him I believe Zack Snyder really is the man for this job. I watched the "maximum movie mode" of Watchmen last night and the amount of passion he and his crew have for their projects is truly inspiring. Chris Terrio is a deserved Oscar winning writer which really solidifies my faith in BVS as a final product. Thursday night 6pm IMAX 3D. Can't wait.
