Bats 3 rumors again

09.08.2008

The Riddler Just when I thought I was out…they pull me back in! The DARK KNIGHT sequel rumors, that is. This particular rumor, however, is a rehash of an old rumor (wow, we're already rehasing rumors?!) but coming from a source who's theoretically in the know.

A while back, a rumor set the internets aflame claiming that Johnny Depp was up for the role of The Riddler and Phillip Seymour Hoffman was looking to become Penguin in director Chris Nolan's theoretical sequel. Today, Michael Caine, who plays noble father figure/butler Alfred to Christian Bale's brooding Batman told MTV's Splash Page "I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle. Are they really thinking along those lines? In short, NO. In all likelihood, this was an executive making a little joke about the rumor. There's not even the thought of a script yet. Plus, why would they rehash villains from the previous Batman films (the Joker was a must given his iconic nature in the Batman mythos but the others aren't). Let's just take a breather until at least Nolan signs on for a sequel, please.

Once Earle gained knowledge of Barrera's presence. He began to plot Victor's demise. After a lab accident left Nora at death's door. Victor resorted to cryogenic freeze and induced his serum for it's properties of cellular fission. Upon reading Richard Earle's fraudulent status report and Victor's refusal to reveal his work. Thomas Wayne ordered Fries to hand over his research or shut down his project. In desperation he embezzled millions to continue his work privately. After being unable to crack Victor's security access. The lab was shut down electronically which produced catastrophic results. Lucius discovered the true madness of it all. As the unseen project he had worked on revealed itself to the light of day. Victor forced his friend out of the lab. Leaving Lucius trapped behind locked doors, helpless from saving his mentor from certain death. Victor fought to stop a containment breach before it reached critical mass. As liquid nitrogen flooded the room and Victor's body grew stiff. In a last educated guess to grant him some mobility and save Nora. He plunged the serum into his heart. An effort which would prove too little, too late. After he awoke in a morgue and mourned the finality of it all. He began planning humanity's domination.
Now, nearly 40 years after the largest scandal in the history of Wayne Enterprise. A man whom was presumed to be dead returns to exact his revenge. With the promise of great wealth, Richard Earle travels to the heart of Antarctica with a series of nuclear launch codes. He is to meet a man known only as Mr. Zero. He is greeted by a being with an ageless face, he could never forget, and a badly deteriorated body. So much so, Victor has replaced his decaying organs, bones and flesh with cybernetics of his design. As promised their exchange will go unfettered. However, Freeze never said he would fly Earle home. As Gotham is met by a less than warm homecoming. Batman goes on the hunt for the villain dubbed as Mr. Freeze. Meanwhile, Dick Grayson promising never to dawn the shadow of Nightwing again. Defiantly he takes on a new persona as Robin. Changing the name of the game, Robin takes it upon himself to free the world's top scientific minds from Freeze's bidding. Only to be ambushed by Brutale and his men. Trained assassins who will prove themselves to be more than just deadly. Fries engages a bitter sweet union with Fox to unveil Bruce Wayne's alter ego and take control of his company's satellites. As Freeze is unaware Nora lays within arms length of him. Lucius Fox makes a final plea to save Victor from his demons. Batman and Robin race against the clock to topple his four decades of meticulous planning. Plans which will melt the polar ice caps and leave the ocean's Great Conveyor Belt in its tracks. Mr. Freeze vows that his Earth will be a new age of reason. As half of the planet is covered in ice and the other bows down to his logic or dies in opposition. The Dark Knight faces his deadliest foe yet. An enemy that is bigger than Batman, bigger than Gotham, with the fate of the world laying in his remorseless grasp.

NEWS OF BATMAN: SHADOW OF THE NIGHT
Batman 3 Synopsis: Jervis Tetch (Mad Hatter) is a neuroscientist who pursues his theories despite genetic sanctions. He creates a synthetic organism by combining his nano technology with human stem cells. Then he gambles to reverse his autistic patient (Riddler) Edward Nigma's mental degradation and prove himself right. He is caught, fired and shunned by the scientific community, but not before discovering the key to mind control. He has the misfortune of testing a subject by the name of (Catwoman) Selina Kyle. She is reclusive secretary suffering from split personality disorder. A home body who's only companionship lies in her cats. Batman is confronted by a new foe named (Dick Grayson) Nightwing. A revenge driven vigilante who's sole declaration is to do to criminals what the Dark Knight will not. Which is kill those who commit atrocities on the people of Gotham like his family. A series of mysterious deaths are approximated within sightings of Nightwing. However, once he announces responsibility for murders Batman had Commissioner Gordon blame him for to preserve Harvey Dent's good name. Batman begins to question the validity of Nightwing's claims to being a murderous vigilante. Batman hunts down Nightwing in an effort to persuade him from becoming what he hates most. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne is seduced by Wayne Enterprise's newest addition Selina Kyle. Selina's alter ego becomes her psyche's dominant personality due to Jervis' attempt to control her. After unforeseen side effects on Selina's neural pathways send her adrenal glands into overdrive and her conscious mind to fall victim to Tetch. Catwoman emerges with unbridled strength, agility and an overconfident sexual appetite. As Tetch uses a cognitive transmitter to impose his will. He plagues the citizens of Gotham, as Mad Hatter, with an organism which gives him reign over their consciousness. The Dark Knight is engulfed at every turn with attempts to end his life by the citizens he swore to protect. Their very eyes act as cameras and their bodies act as weapons to prevent Batman's attempts to stop him. Under the guidance of Lucius Fox, Batman infects himself with Tetch's organism to establish a telepathic link. Bruce Wayne pits himself against Mad Hatter in a battle of mind vs madness. He is greeted by a world from which he wished he had come from. Then in an instant he is confronted by a nightmarish existence from which he can not escape. While he tries to convince Selina Kyle that she is the key to stopping Mad Hatter. Lucius Fox succumbs to Tetch's control and Batman is left trapped in his own head. This leaves a psychotic Catwoman as one of the Dark Knight's only hopes of waking up to the real world again. As a blood thirsty vigilante, who blames Batman for not stopping the man responsible for his family's death, is left to choose his fate.

BATMAN 3 & 4 REVEALED / NY COMIC CON NEWS 1 of 3

I went to the New York Comic-con this year. I found a lot of people talking about the Dark Knight of course. As well as the future story lines for the next 2 films. Several patrons were saying the film is suppose to deal with the introduction of (?Guy Pierce?) Dick Grayson. I heard word that his character was to be spun in the 3rd film directly into the Nightwing character. A vigilante which will later become Robin in the 4th. Several patrons were saying the film is suppose to deal with the introduction of (?Guy Pierce?) Dick Grayson. I heard word that his character was to be spun in the 3rd film directly into the Nightwing character. A vigilante which will later become Robin in the 4th. Selina Kyle / Catwoman (?Angelina Jolie? / ?Keira Knightley?) is supposedly going to be in the next film. As well as ?Johnny Depp? portraying Jervis Tetch / Mad Hatter. There was talk about (?Elijah Wood?) the Riddler's appearance would be small in the 3rd installment. If the franchise makes it to a 5th movie. There is word he will play one of the villians. Aaron Eckhart has been quoted as saying Two Face is dead. Even so, there was mention he would be returning as a budding Harvey Dent. Who begins his career as a public defender. He defends the client who killed Dick Grayson's family. There was also talk that Christopher Nolan has written the predominant story for the 3rd film. Though the screenplay maybe in re-writes now. I have been reading there maybe no further involvement on his part in future Batman films. So the future for the series is up in the air. Despite speculation there would be a Joker and Two Face reunion. I did not hear anything of the kind at Comic-Con. Where it was said Jonathan Nolan has been writing the story for the 4th film with ?Razor Sharpe?. Who I heard will be starring as (Victor Fries) Mr. Freeze. ?Natalie Portman? is speculated to star as Nora Fries. ?Joey Ansah? is said to possibly play Guillermo (Brutale) Barrera. Richard Earle (Rutger Hauer) was mentioned to return in the 4th film as well. It was tossed around that ?Chiwetel Ejiofor? is to play a young Lucius Fox and ?Wentworth Miller? would play a young Richard Earle. Linus Roache (Bruce Wayne's Father / Thomas Wayne) is said to appear in the 4th film too. I did not hear anything on whether David Goyer has any ties to the writing of the next 2 films. Also, is there any truth that Jonathan will be taking up the series in his brother's absence? Are Goyer and Christopher Nolan truly leaving The Dark Knight series to pursue other projects of interest? I hope not. It would be a damn shame if they did. If so, I hope if Jonathan does assume his brother's duties. He is at least half as good as his brother if not as good. If so, I see no reason to fret about whether or not the next films will be good. Because they will be destined to be great.

i honestly don't see nolan directing a third film. i think with the trauma that heath left behind, he probably would want to just leave the batman series (in his hands) at an end. if depp plays the riddler, i'm killing myself.

i would like to see Daniel Day Lewis play a villain, like maybe Black Mask or Jason Statham as Deadshot. I believe that if Crhis Nolan comes back, no matter what villain or actor he picks, I'm sure it will be good. On a side note, After the disaster that was "Batman and Robin", Joel Schumacher was champing at the bit to direct another Batfilm so he could redeem the franchise. He said in an interview that he would have gone darker with it. I say, "yeah, whatever."

I'll bet anything to anyone that Nolan won't direct a Batman movie with the Riddler in it.

If he comes back for a sequel it won't be "The Dark Knight 2" but something totally different.

W/Out Nolan, don't do it..

As much as I'd love to see another Batman w/ this cast & crew, it'll be hard to not make it sucky. It's the third film curse.

And if Nolan doesn't want to direct, than fucking forget it. But WB being greedy, they'll get Ratner to direct it if they have to.

Okay, as far as the villians--I agree Riddler should be totally different--no more crack-headed cackling. He should be the perfect match to Batman. Then we could see more of Bats' detective skills. I'm sure they would make it darker.

hoffman is the perfect choice for penguin, johnny depp, not so much. Paul Bettany would make the perfect riddler. perfect. i've heard the rumors of stiller playing him, and i don't like that. it makes me think of jim carrey's "comedic" version of him. i want to see the dark side of the riddler. his obsession with batman, etc. as long as i dont see the same thing twice i am satisfied... i trust nolan... his two batman films in my eyes are the best superhero movies made... period

Because of Heath Ledger's death, having The Joker return to this franchise would be a horrible mistake. There was closure, for the most part, to the character, and I say leave him locked away. Don't destroy it by recasting him. Unless they can somehow use unseen footage or alternate angles of the scene where he is dangling upside down and then use a stand in for distant shots or shots with him having his back to the camera and create a death scene for him or something...don't bring him back and

actually having the Joker back in some capacity makes the most sense. why? b/c TDK established the primise that Batman's whole purpose is intertwined with the Joker's existance. They play off of each other. If Bats is supposed to be in hiding he would need his other half (The Joker) to facilitate him coming back

im all for rehashing these characters... because those are great villains and in this new Batman world, giving these characters a real world, sociopathic take... would be bad ass!

Real scoop

Bale, Nolan & Caine have all verbally agreed to a third film. As per a Warner-insider: The Joker role will show up as a (Ledgers) cackle/giggle behind a steel/cell door in Arkham. The ONLY serious consideration for the Riddler role so far has been Ben Stiller. Penguin is still a maybe. Man-Bat has also been thrown around. I'll keep ya all posted.

I can wait patiently for Nolan to rest and collect his barings but the wait of having decide to give confirmation for 3 is killer. I can wait three or four years for the next one, I just want to sit peacefully knowing he's in. That being said, old characters should e rehashed because they have yet to be represented perfectly like Joker and Two-Face have been. I want the Riddler because Nolan could do wonders with this psychological villain, I'd like Catwoman so that the Bruce/Selina story can

PSH would be great, but Bob is better suited. I think since 1 had new villains and 2 had old villains, he should mix it up with 1 new villain and 1 old one for the next. I mean come on Chris don't give us the beginning, the middle and not the end! Help me out here!

Just a reminder.....

Take a quick look at the reaction Heath was getting before anything was filmed. Im one to say if Nolan sees it, then its gotta be gold.

[link]

Just read, come back, and re-think this. Does this franchise really NEED to get the names they are (possibly) looking at? Hell at this point if Bob Hoskins gets cast as the Penguin I would be there at midnight. And theres plenty more where that link came from.

Oh, please, ARVINDH

I want to punch you in the nuts for stating that leaving The Joker out of the next Batman film would negate all of his efforts from TDK. That's just a really dumb thing to say. We still have a Batman who is hunted and falsely accused of murder because of The Joker's proxy creation of Two-Face. So for your statement to truly have any kind of rationale, it would be better to say that Two-Face should be back in the next film. So, no, The Joker does NOT need to be in the next film to validate his

I'm with writer19. If that guy pictured above played the riddler, that would possibly be the coolest thing ever. Maybe Nolan himself will see this picture, instantly sign on for a third movie, and make it his personal mission in life to track down whoever the hell that guy is and cast him. Of course, in the movie, he'd have to be sporting a Budweiser at all times.

Anway, I could see Johnny Depp playing the Riddler. I don't see how anybody couldn't, the guy seems to be capable of whatever

With Jackieboy

C'mon people! Johnny Depp is a great actor, but he can't play everything! He would not work as the Riddler, he's just not right for it.

But I liked Jackieboy's suggestion of Guy Pierce. I actually thought of that myself. I can picture him in a mask and bowler hat, no problem.

And there's no way Nolan would go for the Penguin.

All this Batman 3 news is starting to piss me off. Nolan doesn't even know if he wants to make a third movie, so how in the hell would there be all this casting news?

This is all bullshit. Especially Hoffman playing the Penguin, I could never see that character in Nolan's Bat-universe.

Johnny Depp for The Riddler would be awesome, I'm not so sure about Hoffman. Not that he can't play Cobblepot, but seeing the Penguin in Nolan's Gotham just doesn't jive well in my opinion. Still, in all respect to Heath Ledger, I'm hoping to see The Joker again. A cameo at least. CGI, unused footage, or dare I say, a recast. Leaving The Joker out of Batman 3 would deem his efforts in TDK worthless. There has to be an aftershock. IF The Joker were to be recast, I'd still pick Depp to fill in

Has anyone ever considered Guy Pierce for
the role of the Riddler? Knowing him and
Nolan's history, that would be pretty interesting.
Plus a cameo of Crispin Glover as the Joker in
the shadows of Arkham...
But, Philip Seymour would make a hell of a penguin.

I'm tired of hearing that unsubstantiated shit over and over.

LUIS GUZMAN IS CATWOMAN!

That's a casting rumour I'd get a fuckin' kick out of.

riddler scares me

When I was a kid and reading Batman comics I was always intrigued the most by the Riddler. He creeped me out a lot. He seemed very coldly calculating about his homicidal ways since it was always a battle of intelligence, knowledge and wits with Batman and killing people was how he played his "game". Gave me chills as a kid...still does. And Hoffman would be a "killer" idea if they run with making the penguin more of an arms dealer, supplying the baddies of Gotham with weaponry which I heard was

Riddler, Penguin or possibly Hush would make a great choice for a follow up. And Depp or DDL or any great actor in the riddler role definitely gives me a bat boner...can't wait!

I don't see why everyone thinks the penguin is such a silly character. These are the same people who say Nolan can do no wrong btw,but then they get iffy about the penguin like Nolan would all of a sudden turn into Joel Schumacher if he used that character. Take the basic premise of the penguin(overweight, large nose, loves birds) then turn him into an Al Capone type gangster who is here to fill the vacuum created by the criminal underworld being left in shambles. Also, no Johnny depp for

Also, no Johnny depp for the riddler, too obvious. Anyone think Billy Crudup could pull it off?

Serious?

I can deal with PSH as the Penguin, but i despise Depp with a passion, i'd rather sniff a dirty diaper with wet dog food in it, then watch him in a movie. But like O-Dog said, why are they bringing back villains from previous Batmans? CLAYFACE!!! CLAYFACE!!! CLAYFACE!!!!

I didn't like TDK, but ill check out another one...for free.

Penguin

I would like to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the penguin, especially if he wears that fresh, fur-collared coat that the penguin wore in the Dark Victory storyline.

If this was true I'm sure the two actors would knock it out of the park but I'm expecting Nolan, if he returns, to do some out of context casting, like casting an actor who hasn't played a villian before.

As far as The Penguin, like Balboa said, Nolan most likely won't include him, he's too wacky. I also heard that WB wants a strong female lead for the sequel and you know what that means. I would be down for an off kilter-casted Riddler/ Catwoman combo. They're really gonna need to step it

They're really gonna need to step it up after Heath and you have to think about Shakespearean type actors so how about Day-Lewis as The Riddler and Kate Winslet for Catwoman? I had heard that Nolan wanted Day-Lewis (or Viggo) for Ra's Al in BEGINS, this could be their chance to work together and I think it could be huge.

i think its time to put bats 3 rumors to rest. I loved the dark knight just as much as the nerdiest fanboy, and i'd love to see where this crew is taking the story of batman. it was a great success, both critically & financially.

but this cast & crew had a huge loss in heath ledger, and no one is even certain of the emotional toll it has taken on them, not to mention the stuntman who perished. it'd probably be best (and more humane) if we, as responsible, mature fans give them the time they

also, we have to keep in mind, the only thing that has been confirmed by the crew is that nolan intended to bring the joker back for the third installment, which cant happen. a nice breather is well deserved.

Great idea. Johnny Depp would make a great Riddler. I thought Christopher Nolan said absolutely no to The Penguin though.
