Beatle movie brawl

03.20.2007by:

A storm is a-brewin' over at Revolution Studios over the upcoming Beatles-based musical ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. Director Julie Taymor (FRIDA) submitted her cut of the film to the studio but it wasn't universally loved. Revolution head Joe Roth (himself a director of such cinema classics as CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS) decided to recut the film himself without telling Taymor and test the film with audiences. This understandably pissed off Taymor (who won awards for her work directing "The Lion King" on Broadway) and the director is considering taking her name off the project altogether. Taymor released a statement saying, "My creative team and I are extremely happy about our cut and the response to it." Roth retorted with, "This process is not anything out of the ordinary. Her reaction through her representatives might be...No one is uncomfortable in this process, other than Julie." Doesn't sound like this is getting resolved easily anytime soon. The film, which features renditions of over 35 Beatles songs and stars Evan Rachel Wood, was originally scheduled for release last September.

So...

...this thing was originally conceived as a direct to DVD or TV-movie of the week, right?

Because frankly, I don't think anyone cares.

the trailer was neat

the trailer wasnt bad, I would probably see it on DVD and the Beatles have a lot of fans, disappointing to see a hack cut the movie up, calling himself a filmmaker and not even telling the original team that did the real work. Wouldn't you be pissed if your hard work went to waste when some talentless idiot takes your stuff and screws with it?

Since Taymor is a gifted director I am quite pissed that a well-known bureaucratic hack whose previous forays into directing have resulted in some of the worst movies in recent memory has decided he would do a better job editing the movie.

I'm not that hip to the whole Beatles' songs musical thing, but Taymor is a visual artist. My neck hairs still stand on end when I remember her acid-trip adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus.

And I take issue with "cricker" for dismissing this

And I take issue with "cricker" for dismissing this movie on the grounds it stars Evan Rachel Wood. She's one of the few young actresses who doesn't look destined for a short career followed by appearances on "The Surreal Life" (Lindsey Lohan, I'm talking to you).

Oh, damn.....

This is unfortunate news. I was really looking forward to this one. One of the best trailers I've seen in quite a while, ans with Taymor Directing I thought also maybe one of the best movies i'd probably see this year. And who the fuck doesn't love the Beatles?

The fact that this is a common practice in the industry, says a lot about the industry. It's no surprise though as Hollywood is probably the most renowned and recognized breeding ground of assholes, next to Texas.

Son of a bitch..

Wow, thanks again Hollywood for managing to fuck up anything original that comes around. The movie, based on the trailer at least, looked as if it was going to be absolutely amazing visually and a real trip to watch and listen to. I'm pissed now.
