Beauty and the Beast remake to feature first openly gay Disney character

03.01.2017

You read that right! Seems that Disney will have its first gay character (at least on screen) debuting in the live-action remake of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. And, of course it will be Gaston's (Luke Evans) toady, LeFou (Josh Gad). Here's director Bill Condon (TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN PARTS 1 & 2) talking about the decision:

LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston...He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realising that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.

Hmmm. Not sure having LeFou (whose name in French literally means "Crazy Guy") is the best candidate for "first openly gay Disney character", but it is nice to have some LGBT recognition in the House of Mouse, regardless. And maybe it will be tasteful, as Condon himself is openly gay (alongside stars Luke Evans and Ian McKellen). So I'm hoping for the best, even as I expect the worse (especially considering LeFou is also kind of a shit-heel in the cartoon). We'll see.

And, yes, it also seems a bold claim to make when Timon and Pumba exist. As well, this news is hot-on-heels of the Disney Channel featuring a same-sex kiss on one of its kid's cartoons, which is cool. Maybe this will open the door to a gay princess? One can only hope.

Either way, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST will hit theaters March 17th, 2017.

Extra Tidbit: Josh Gad was also the voice of that annoying snowman Olaf in FROZEN. In case you forgot.

Oops

I'm sure they mean well, but their first gay character being a goofy sidekick whose name means Crazy Guy will most likely bring a mixed response, even within the gay community. I don't think Disney thought this through, unless they made major changes to the character.

When I first heard this I thought what about Lumiere? Even before I knew what gay was I was sure he was some raging queen (and also my favorite character). It makes sense that Le Fou has some unrequited feelings toward Gaston, and if the movie keeps the ending intact, tragic as well.

Next thing you know, they probably gonna say some of their Princesses are bisexual. Come on, it's a cartoon for frak sake!

Because that's what I want to take a kid to see.......

Children, are the fine line between being "gay" and 'being "creepy AF".
"I ain't fraid of no ghosts."

I really don't give a shit about positive or negative portrayal of LGBT characters as long as it's realistic. Asshole gay people exist, but let's make that a character instead of a caricature.

If it isn't a positive portrayal of a gay character, why bother?

It's a shame that the best an openly gay director can contribute is an obnoxious toady character. Will he have a lisp too? I hope this doesn't play as offensive as it sounds.

Oh For Fucks Sake!

Look this should be irrelevant. Sexual identity is such a complicated messy thing it's not really even appropriate to graple with it in a kids film. Frankly It's not something I would want my hypothetical children until they are old enough to process it. But don't let that stop you from shoving it down audiences throates Diney. I'm sure middle America will love it!

Why?
"Frankly It's not something I would want my hypothetical children until they are old enough to teach adults how to process it. But don't let that stop you from teaching audiences Diney. I'm sure middle America will love it!"
Fixed.
Here's 2 stories for you:
a) Kid sees gay couple kiss: (Sadly how too many adults see it)
Kid -

a) Kid sees gay couple kiss: (Sadly how too many adults see it)
Kid - Mommy/daddy, why are they kissing?
Parent - How dare they do that in front of children. Now I have to explain what gay means to my children and they are not ready for this burden

b) Kid sees gay couple kiss (how it SHOULD go)
Kid - Mommy/daddy, why are they kissing?
Parent - Because they love each other
Kid - Oh...what's for lunch?

Kids don't care. Only adults think it's a "complicated messy thing".
Granted, I don't see why they are doing it here either, but It also doesn't bother me that they are. Whatever. It's a movie.

Sure.
... because it is vital to the storyline, and it will play a major role in the events of the movie. We have to know that he's gay.
Groundbreaking.

So the first openly gay Disney character will be the assistant villain who is in love with the main villain. And his name is "crazy guy">
Nope nothing potentially offensive there.
Actually I'm convinced most of the live action Jungle Book characters may have been gay. Seems like except for the wolves they all lived far away from any females of any species. ;)

I didn't say either of those things, and neither have some others. Don't throw everyone in the same boat. Those kinds of sweeping generalizations are called stereotyping.

Isn't gad openly gay in every role he plays?

His voice is just so grating, I figured it got that way from guzzling semen...

Makes sense

Looking back at the original, it seemed like the character had an odd obsession with Gaston.
