Beetlejuice sequel rises from the dead

09.06.2011

Warner Bros. has just signed a first look feature producing deal with David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith. That may not mean anything to you, but the end result is likely this: We're getting another BEETLEJUICE movie.

The Deadline article is scant on details, but is adamant that one of two new projects the duo is working on will in fact be another BEETLEJUICE film. The word is that this will not be a "remake" but a " reboot by advancing the storyline of the original" or in other words, a "sequel." And here I've always thought a reboot was closer to a remake than a sequel.

A BEETLEJUICE sequel has been rumored since its release in 1988, but no one ever really thought that would ever happen. But here in 2011, Hollywood has been out of ideas for a while now, and it's time to sequelize everything mildly successful that never got the treatment.

Do you want to see another BEETLEJUICE movie? Would or should Michael Keaton return?

Extra Tidbit: Will Tim Burton return and try to shoehorn Johnny Depp in?

Beetlejuice is my childhood favorite movie. I still have my VERY old VERY used VHS copy and some of Beetlejuice toys. And I also still think Keaton could play the Chost with the Most about as well as he did 23 years ago.

But that's just it. It's been 23 years and I don't know what they can do at this point to "advance the story." Adam went and got fat, so if Adam and Barbara show up it won't make sense. They're ghosts, they don't get fat. Lydia's over forty now. The only way I can think of

If only we could get Sylvia Sidney back as Juno. She was awesome.

i love the idea

unlike most i love the idea of a sequel/ reboot as we saw it kinda works, look at first class, it was a great movie, if burton returned i think it would be sweet especially given that the only sequel of his owrk i know him for was batman returns which actually i think was very under rated. the complaint of too dark is rediculous because batman is supposed to be a dark character.
either way bring it on!

As long as they don't go with that Beetlejuice: Hawaii Vacation plot they originally had back in the day and Burton and Keaton are in, respecting the material, then I'm in.

Knowing this day and age, the front runners for a role like this are probably going to be Seth Rogen, Zach Galifiankais, Danny McBride or some other repulsive fat gross typecasted comedy slob for the lowbrow crowd.

So unless it's Keaton, I seriously hope this dies.

Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Demention

is ripe for a remake/reboot/sequel with a different cast... c'mon cant you see John Lithgow after seeing him in Rise of the Apes???? Crazy people! if you're out of ideas.... remake Buckaroo Banzai.... as for Beetlejuice... um, ok sure why not... it can come out the same weekend as Ghostbusters III does. I'm ok with that...

I love Buckaroo Banzai, but I don't think you can give that a remake/reboot/sequel and stay true to all of its cult glory.

I would be only down if Keaton AND Burton came back. But I would also be fine if this sequel never gets made. BUT another part of me wishes this happens because Keaton is brilliant as Beetlejuice and the fact that he needs more work.

hmm

Michael Keaton has said that he loves the character and would love to play Beetlejuice again. I can't imagine the film having any sort of integrity without him returning. And I can imagine Burton fucking it up, but can also see it being awesome(that's just me wishing he'd go back to that same atmosphere and set design and such as the original)

No way it comes close...

Burton won't sign on, Jones won't be asked anywhere near it after his kiddie porn charges, Otho passed away last year, Ghosts aren't supposed to age so Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin aren't in, Catherine O'Hara, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder would be the only imaginable returning cast...which makes it a Bad Idea.

Advancing the Storyline = If it's a whole new cast with Keaton I'd be onboard.

Although I'm against this idea...

You could do the film without Burton. You could maybe even do it without Keaton. But you cannot do it without the classic Danny Elfman main theme.

A reboot by advancing the storyline of the original...I could swear there is a movie out there similar to that idea.

Oh yeah, I remember...Alice in Wonderland!

reboot, remake, sequel, whats the difference nowadays, every movie i loved when i was younger is getting that treatment so no shock here, i don't see neither Burton nor Keaton returning to do this.

Dont make a sequel!

It NEEDS TO HAVE MICHAEL KEATON AND TIM BURTON!!! but I know how hollywood is these days, they will probably hire two young writers who know almost nothing about Beetlejuice and turn the movie into something compeltely different and hire different actors that dont fit the part.
Hopefully the will do the right thing and make it a sequel and hire Michael Keaton!

There's no need for a sequel, the original movie stands alone. That being said, if they managed to get both Burton and Keaton back, I'd be curious to see the result. Not holding my breath, though.

It'd be great if Keaton would return. Hate to see another actor play the role. But how are they gonna explain why Beetlejuice looks so much older. Ghosts don't age do they?

The benefit of playing a dead guy like Beetlejuice is the more haggered you look, the better it is for the character.

ok listen....

as far as this rumor is goes, personally, if keaton and burton are not back, don't even bother. especially when both these two could really get back to their roots as to why they were awesome to begin with! especially burton. and sure, put depp in there somewhere. make him the villian or something.

But I'm not optimistic that they'll get it right. Especially with how Burton is as a director these days.

I can't really add more then just echo what's already been said. If Keaton is involved, I'm in. But, the term "reboot" suggests he won't so, it would depend on who is the new Beetlejuice and who's involved behind the camera as to how psyched I get for this.

Yes, out of curiosity

The original was so good, that it would be a crime to not even try to make a sequel. No offense to Michael Keaton, but at his age could he pull off the undead Beetlejuice again with the same vivacity? I think probably so, but personally I don't think it would be a huge stretch to see Johnny Depp in the part. Though he hasn't exactly been at his most eccentric with his recent roles, either, so it's up to Tim Burton to make sure he and whoever his cast are bring it just like they did the first

No Beetlejuice without Keaton

We've suffered enough with studios screwing up everything that was once good. Hopefully Burton is involved and prevents the studio from recasting.

For me a big part of the appeal of Beetlejuice is the cheesy B movie efx, and old school Tim Burton production design. Sadly this will probably end up a CG filled crap-a-thon like Burtons recent movies. It would be cool if like in the cartoon it mostly takes place in the netherworld though, and Keaton has to return, he IS Beetlejuice.

I don't know...

That was my favorite movie when I was between 8 and 12 years old. I wore that VHS tape down until it was unwatchable.

I just don't know if this could be any good. It'd be nice to see the character again, but everything about that movie really came together so nicely. It wasn't just the Beetlejuice character.

Also: "Nice fucking model!" *kicks tree* HONK HONK!!!

Low-budget please

Beetlejuice appeal relies on its low-budget imaginative special effects and the charm of the original cast. With none of those involved I predict a total failure. Bring back Keaton & Burton with a 40 million dollars budget and we´re talking.

We've come for yer daughter, Chuck.

The animated series proved that it isn't all that hard to write entertaining Beetlejuice material. And Michael Keaton certainly doesn't have anything bigger on his plate. I say go for it.
