Behold the new full trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Jul. 28, 2014by: Alex Maidy

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES has a lot to live up to since RETURN OF THE KING was the third installment of THE LORD OF THE RINGS and that film won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. While THE HOBBIT films have not been quite Best Picture worthy, I have no doubt that Peter Jackson plans to make this film the defining link between J.R.R. Tolkien's works on the big screen.

After waiting a year since THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, we now have our first full look at the trailer for THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES and it showcases not just the immediate continuation of Smaug's attack on Lake-town but the titular battle that will change the destinies for all characters involved. Jackson may have relied more heavily on CGI for this trilogy, but the guy certainly still knows how to choreograph and film a massive war sequence.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbos frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Whether THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES will bring this trilogy to a satisfactory close remains to be seen. I just hope that the final hour of the film is not full of a dozen fake-out endings like he did with RETURN OF THE KING. THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES opens in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on December 17th 2014.

Have they still not killed that fucking dragon yet? Come on, man, even that 'Dragonslayer' ponce managed to kill the most awesome dragon ever in less than 2 hours.

Wow. @451-1138 said it best. I feel the exact same way and it's such a shame because the LOTR trilogy is truly amazing. I'll see this regardless, but I know I'll feel uneasy about it the same I felt about the last two. Not horrible per se, but a big disappointment this new trilogy turned out to be.

Honestly, I just want to see if Gandolph and Legolas survive, things were looking pretty grim for them at the end of the last one! The suspense is killing me...

Actually, they both die. The Gandalf and Legolas who you see later on in 'The Lord of the Rings' are clones from an alternative Middle-Earth that made huge scientific advances.

Not dying to see this but I'll definitely be going, just watching the dragon roast an entire village of poor people will be worth the ticket price alone.

Why does this do nothing for me. It should move me. I don't understand what's missing from these movies. Perhaps because they've done a poor job of making me really care about any of the characters. Even Bilbo is just annoying to me.

CGI fest

How come these movies look so terrible when the LOTR trilogy looked 10 times better a decade ago?! Everything about them is wrong; the make up, the sets, the lighting, the bad green screens, the colour saturation... even some of the costumes are awful like most of the Dwarves' ridiculous designs and their fake beards. How come Gimli was so cool? I still can't get over Thorin's silly casting as a young sexy Dwarf that looks more like Aragorn that Gimli although he's supposed to be the oldest of

Anyways, it all stinks big overproduced CGI and absolutely NOTHING feels real and tangible. These films will not pass the test of time...

Shut up and take my money!

Yes, THE HOBBIT trilogy has its flaws but I think this movie is going to bring everything together in a satisfying way. I got chills when the Elven Army saluted Bard. Actually, I got chills through most of this trailer.

Great choice of music

I love that song and it fits well into the dreary atmosphere of the trailer.

The Hobbit trilogy may not be in the same league as The Lord of the Rings, but I still seriously enjoy them. Looking forward to finishing another journey to Middle Earth.
