Behold the breathtaking trailer for Alejandro G. Inarritu's The Revenant

07.17.2015

If you thought BIRDMAN was something special, you haven't seen anything yet. THE REVENANT is directed and co-written by Academy Award® winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu and stars the astounding Leonardo DiCaprio alongside Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter. Filmed using only natural light over eight months, this is the project that forced Hardy to drop out of David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD. Now, we get a chance to see what the movie is all about.

Our own Editor-in-Chief Paul Shirey got a first look at the movie a couple of months ago and this new trailer goes a long way to cement his take on the film. Here's a quick synopsis for the movie.

Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.

The requisite talk will now commence that this could finally be the movie that earns Leonardo DiCaprio an Academy Award. All involved here are of the highest order of talent and, once again, Inarritu has done something very different than what you would expect from most directors working today. Could we see back to back Best Picture wins from him? Regardless, THE REVENANT is a must see this Christmas.

THE REVENANT hits theaters on December 25th.

Definitely see the Terrence Malick influences

This looks absolutely gorgeous. I can definitely see this being a Leo vs Hardy Best Actor competition, but that really excites me.

Wait, Brett Ratner produced this?! Maybe his calling is that of a producer instead of director? This looks amazing.

Looks amazing. The cinematography alone looks to be a character itself. Regardless if Leo wins an Oscar for this he remains one of the finest actors of any generation and one of my favorites, and this looks to be one of his crowning achievements.

Incredible trailer

The promise that was made that the cinematography, which will probably get an oscar, giving more of a realistic feeling to the movie is 100% true. It looks so raw and authentic to the time. I am there day 1!

Tom Hardy and Leo look great and the cinematography is breathtaking! There are some beautiful shots in there. This must have been a tremendous pain in the ass to make, hehe.

Just.. Wow...

If the movie is anything like this trailer it should be supurb and spectacular. I was at the edge of my seat that whole trailer. "Breathtaking" is truly an understatement. Who makes the trailers anyway? I always wondered that. Sometimes trailers can be better than the movies. On a side note... Dear Oscar Gods, Please let Leo win an Academy Award finally. Thank you. (He probably still won't win. Lol I wonder what he must have done in his younger years to piss off the Academy.

Remake

This looks like a direct remake of the Richard Harris and John Huston movie "Man in the Wilderness" from 1971. Hollywood continues to run dry on new Ideas. It's a great story but at least mention it's a remake and let's watch it before we go awarding Oscars.

Is it a remake if both movies are based on the same real life story of Hugh Glass?

Is it really a remake though if both films derived from a true event? They aren't "remaking" Man in the Wilderness.... they are perhaps "retelling" the story of Hugh Glass, although the protagonist in Man in the Wilderness is not even named Hugh Glass. Just a thought. Nevertheless, looks like an interesting film and will check it out

Hugh Glass, Mountain Man

I remember learning about Hugh Glass when I was in the 6th grade. I always thought this story would make an amazing film. I'm so excited about this. If you haven't read the book you should.

Terrence Malick goes to war.

Been eagerly following this one for a while, and now I... realize I had no idea what was coming. I hadn't really taken the time to actually think about what the movie would be, because you know, you generally just expect a movie. But this is like Terrence Malick bathed in bloody mud, grabbed an axe, and went to war with himself, and I love it. DiCaprio's wild in a way I've never seen him before. I've no idea who any of those other people are or why they're raiding each other and hunting each

Point is: so goddamn cool. Surprisingly so, too.

I dug it

I enjoyed the trailer, love Hardy and Leo, great aesthetic to the film, can't wait for the movie. Not much to the trailer really except a bunch of random shots, but hell if they aren't glorious looking!

Awesome

Ironic that Leo's biggest competition for the Oscar is probably going to be his own co-star, Tom Hardy.

Hard to tell from that quick clip. Possibly CGI... I mean, the last bear working for tv and film was Bart and he died in 2000.

Gorgeously done but you can tell by the sheen of the fur that something is amiss; and that is CG (commonly and erroneously referred to as CGI). I imagine it's not easy to find a stuntman willing to get mauled by a bear for the sake of art.

Unlike some other things, CG robots and animals look nearly imperceptibly real, e.g. Transformers, Chappie, Life of Pi and Rise/Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

CG and CGI are the exact same thing. Computer Generated Imagery = CGI = what that bear is.

FYI Plenty of stunt men (and even actors) have wrestled with bears for film.

This is my most anticipated of the year. That's bold talk in a year that includes a Tarantino film, another Bond movie, and a return to Star Wars. But you can't deny the ambition of a project like this. And I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be a career-best for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Hell. Yeah.

I've been telling my friends about this film since the start of production... Now here's the proof of its glory. Star Wars aside, this has to be up there for most anticipated film of the year. Can't wait.
