Ben Affleck doesn't want to be a gangster in first trailer for Live By Night

Ben Affleck Live By Night

If you told me a decade ago that I'd not only be looking forward to film starring Ben Affleck but that Affleck also directed said film, I'd probably scoff and go back to doing whatever the hell it was that I was doing a decade ago, which was likely...nothing. After GONE BABY GONE, THE TOWN and ARGO, Ben Affleck has more than earned my attention, both in regards to his work in front of and behind the camera. The first teaser trailer for LIVE BY NIGHT has been released and it looks as though it has the potential to be Ben Affleck's best work to date.

"Breaking the rules meant nothing, you had to be strong enough to make your own."

Looks great, sounds great and damn, what a cast; in addition to Ben Affleck, LIVE BY NIGHT includes the talents of Zoë Saldana, Sienna Miller, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Titus Welliver, Elle Fanning, Chris Messina and more. Wrap all that up in a Prohibition era gangster story and I'm quickly wishing we could skip ahead to January already.

An official synopsis for LIVE BY NIGHT:

By 1926, Prohibition in the United States had given rise to an endless network of underground distilleries, speakeasies, gangsters, and corrupt cops. Joe Coughlin, the youngest son of a prominent Boston police captain, defies his proper upbringing by climbing a ladder of organized crime that takes him from Boston to Ybor City, Florida, to Havana, Cuba, where he encounters a dangerous cast of characters who are all fighting for their piece of the American dream.

LIVE BY NIGHT is set for a January 13, 2017 release.

Seeing Affleck continuously direct and write great movies still blows me away on why he isn't writing and directing the DC movies he'll appear in. Aside from that, this looks really good, love vibe and feel from what he's showing us in this trailer.

First off, can't wait to see that SPLAT when the guy thrown off the roof hits the ground. Most movies would cut away from that, but it looks like Affleck's going to show the whole brutal affair. Other than that, the film looks great, both thematically and from a "period accurate" point of view. I never really thought about it, but from the trailer Affleck definitely has the "look" to pull off a 20's gangster. My only complaint would be that Affleck's Boston accent seems to fluctuate a lot, but

My only complaint would be that Affleck's Boston accent seems to fluctuate a lot, but who knows, that might be a part of the story; moving from the Boston slums to decadent Havana... All I know is, this is one I'm excited for! I can't believe the career turnaround this guy's had.

Also, I hope they take the time to talk about Affleck's relationship with Zoe Saldana. Don't get me wrong, interracial marriage is A-OK in my book, but in the 20's it was a big cultural no-no. This film seems to be pretty period accurate and back then, their relationship would have been a huge deal. Maybe it's explained in the book?

Usually a January release date isn't a good sign, but that was a good trailer and I like the talent in front and behind the camera. I've been looking forward to another prohibition era gangster film since Boardwalk Empire ended, and this will give me my fix.

This is getting a wide release in January. It is getting a release in a few theaters, in December, unlike Gangster Squad.

That looks neither generic or anything as bad as Gangster Squad.

Looks brilliant. Love the fact that Affleck has been able to resurrect his career in front of the camera AND behind the camera as well these past couple of years. I always thought he was talented and its great to see him finally getting the recognition he deserves.

I still think his best film is Argo (how he didn't win Best Director or was even nominated is tragic) even though The Town is my personal favorite of his directorial films and I'm glad to see him stretching out his skills more

And after three great films (hopefully four) after this one, I absolutely can't wait to see what he does with his own solo Batman film. Like I had written in my previous post, I really think he has the potential to make the best Batman film we have seen thus far with this terrific directorial and writing skills.

I agree with you but it would be better if he focused on movies like this. He seems to be tired of Batman already.

@thunderdome he's stalling the solo film, and he sounded irritated in some interviews. Maybe he doesn't care for it much anymore

Gotcha, I definitely saw an interview or two where he didn't seem as engaged but it seemed like he was more physically tired than anything. He's a great Batman and seems really enthusiastic at the Comic Cons but who knows. I'm sure he thought the film would get a better reception.
