Ben Affleck says he was "reluctant" to don the cowl for Zack Snyder's Batman vs Superman

10.25.2013

Ben Affleck was recently interviewed by 411 Mania, and the actor talked to the site about how thrilling it is the Red Sox are back in the World Series:

Obviously its very exciting. Its so strange to be in a world where the sox have a chance win their third world series in ten-

Wait, who gives a damn about baseball? Tell us about the Bat, Ben! Seriously though, Affleck had a conversation with the site about playing Batman and he said at first he wasn't sure about taking the part in Zack Snyder's film.

Initially I was reluctant as I felt I didn't fit the traditional mold but once Zack showed me the concept, and that it would be both different from the great movies that Chris and Christian made but still in keeping with tradition I was excited. Doing something different and new is always tricky and part of the thrill and the risk is that initially it confounds expectations. The truth is, it's the movie and the execution of it is what all the actors depend on and I believe in Zack's vision.

Back in September Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara said Ben Affleck's Batman will be "tired, and kind of weary and seasoned." The site asked Affleck if he felt the same way about this version of Batman, and if he had anything else to say about the character.

Yes, Kevin described it aptly. I don't want to go further because I want to be able to capitalize on what is new about this iteration by having it be a surprise to the audience.

411 Mania also asked Ben Affleck which actor was his favorite Batman, but didn't give a real answer, and instead responded with, "It has been done very well many times before." Aw, c'mon Affleck. You can tell us.

That's it for Batman related comments from Affleck, but he did share a list of several television series he really enjoys watching, and apparently he's a big fan of Game of Thrones. Can someone please make a parody video of Ben Affleck reacting to the Red Wedding? Pretty please?

Game of Thrones is my current obsession (dying for its return). Homeland is terrific. Downton Abbey is great. I read Damon Lindeloff's pilot and know some people on the show. Its going to be amazing. There is an abundance of riches right now.

I'm not going to lie: I love me some Ben Affleck. Even during the dark years of GIGLI and Jennifer Lopez I had a soft spot for him because of his appearances on SNL, and his work with Kevin Smith. I really enjoyed Christian Bale's take on Batman, but I'm ready for someone new, and I'm pumped to see how the character will be portrayed in the upcoming film.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17th, 2015.

I think the difference here is Affleck won't be required to carry the movie entirely. This isn't a solo Batman film, honestly it feels more like the MOS 2 feat. Batman. Then eventually if JLA ever becomes a reality he'll be part of an ensemble. If he were starting a new Batman franchise, then yeah that would probably be a disaster.

I hate how everything about this movie has to do with Batman. It's supposed to and should be a SUPERMAN movie plain and simple. That's my fundamental problem with this film, not Affleck. And Snyder is the other problem, so extra tidbit = NO!

As long as Batman is in a Superman movie, it will be a Batman movie, he's just the much more interesting and better character, always has been.

I don't have a problem with Affleck's acting ability. I have a problem with him being too popular. Casting someone so well-known eliminates the suspension of disbelief. It would be like casting Tom Cruise as Dr. Strange or Superman. He's a great actor and one of my favorites, but there's no way I would see anyone else but Cruise and not the character. I just think more unknown actors are better for these roles.

If only he was writing and directing it too, might actually have a chance at not being a pile of crap.

Over the years he has been so unbearably bad in nearly everything that drinking games were based on him. I simply can't take him serious in anything. His voice alone will be funny as hell to hear as Batman. I might torrent this film to have a good laugh, but nothing will get me in the theaters to see a Ben Affleck movie.

I have compete faith in Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck. I'm excited to see how they as a team take on Batman, and as long as people can acknowledge that they're trying to establish a new take on the character and not build/mimick anything from Nolan, I think people will be able to judge it for what it is.

Still not buying it.

You can spin this tale a million different ways, it doesn't change the fact that Affleck was given Batman because he's Warner's golden goose. All this talk about him being a "perfect fit" for this unique version of the role is a load of nonsense. There are a dozen other guys from Anson Mount to Richard Armitage who could have played the role way better, the only difference being they can't win the studio Oscars every other year, and Affleck can. I'll say this again with the hopes of being

I'll say this again with the hopes of being proven wrong: Ben Affleck is a mediocre actor who can't pull off anything close to Batman. Give him a role within his comfort zone and he's great. Otherwise, he's just Ben Affleck in a Batman suit.

You say Warner's went with a guy who can win them oscars over guys who can't like that's a bad thing. Your argument only strenghthens Affleck being the right guy for the job. They went with the smart choice and he can do batman. It doesn't take an Oscar worthy performance to play batman anyway.

You are wrong Leslie. The last Batman was an Oscar winner and look at how popular that series is. In fact, there was quite a few people who have Oscars in the last Batman movie. That's what's so great about the Nolan series. They took the material seriously. They should have went with an unknown and created a whole new world that felt like the Nolanverse. Not taking a staple of mediocre movies and propping him up like he's Jesus. It takes more than to just put on a cape and cowl.

@evil eric: Couldn't have said it better myself!

@LeslieVernon: Winning Oscars for movies you directed doesn't automatically make you a suitable candidate for a role like Batman. This is a character who has influenced thousands of other pop-culture works and characters because of how deep and rich the character's history is. Ben Affleck just doesn't cut it.

Very excited. Love the 'Ffleck. VIsually, aurally, and acting-wise, Man of Steel was great. The script needed about three more passes though, and I hope they take some of the massive internet criticism to heart. Plot and, more importantly, characterization needed a lot of work.
EIther way, Superman/Batman is going to probably be the highest grossing movie of all time, and it'll probably be at least a little bit entertaining, even by accident.

I am a huge Affleck fan and I like the casting. He is a great actor/film maker.
But there is a huge split in opinion on casting for DC heroes. Look at Marvel. There was great rejoicing with the announcement of Spader as Ultron. The casting for the Marvel films has been great. Andrew Garffield as Spidey. Hemsworth as Thor. Johansson as Black Widow. Evans as Cap, RDJ as Iron-Man, Hiddleston as Loki, Jackman as Wolverine. Overall the casting for the Marvel heroes has gone remarkably well

Clooney, Kilmer, Keaton, West, Bale, Affleck, there's always a pretty vocal fan base that doesn't approve when it is announced.
Guarantee when Batman Vs Superman comes out it will be a hit at the box office.

I love DC Heroes, but the last couple of movies haven't really resonated for me. I hope that the next one is better but it's tough to get excited with what I know so far. I think an older Batman has more potential to be boring to me than exciting. Hope they can prove me wrong.

If The Town and Argo hadn't been released before this I would have been pissed with this casting, but they both brought something to the table from Ben I haven't seen before. So, I'm optimistic for this but not overly so.

All I got to say is that the man was nominated for the "Worst actor of the Decade" razzie award. He was nominated for 9 other razzies, won a few, and looks to be nominated again this year for Runner, Runner.

And this also confirms my initial concerns. Affleck never auditioned, he was handed the role. This is WB reverting to its old ways with Batman.

I never thought of him as a Batman...but then whoever envisage Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney and Bale getting the roles prior to when they did and how many thought they could pull it off after knowing? Hell...how many of us knew who Conroy (the best Batman) was? I used to watch Tour of Duty...apparently he was in season 1 or something...I'm still not sure who he was playing. I used to have an issue with anyone voicing Batman after Conroy but the most it ever stuck out was when William Baldwin

I used to have an issue with anyone voicing Batman after Conroy but the most it ever stuck out was when William Baldwin voiced him in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths but by the movie’s end...Batman was so epic in that...I just accepted the voice and didn't have a problem with it. As for the live action stars...we can argue all night long who did it best (I'll go for Bale as he got both sides spot on) but none did it badly (some just had the misfortune of being in movies that sucked). Affleck's Matt Murdock was fine...the movie just wasn't great. Who believed Chris Evans could pull off an intense Steve Rogers who we'd feel so sorry for (all about those deleted Avengers' clips) after playing (and playing it well) Johnny Storm who needed a lesson in humility and responsibility? So there's really no reason to be worried about Affleck's selection. Though should Affleck suck, by all means, whine till your heart's content ;o)

I was totally campaigning for Christian Bale before he was cast, and I saw a lot of other people doing it as well. Not that I think it made a difference. It just made the fact he got cast even cooler.

As far as voicing the character, if it can't be Conroy, I really liked Bruce Greenwood

Bale was a fan favorite long before his name was even attached to Batman. Keaton, Clooney, and Bale were all at the start of their careers when they were cast. Affleck has been a celebrity actor for 20 years. He is not going to suddenly be good. Also, Affleck's Matt Murdock was hilariously bad. Perhaps one of the worst superhero performances I have ever seen.

Bob Loblaw - Fair enough on the Bale casting. I don't remember following the casting news for Batman Begins for some reason. As for "Affleck's Matt Murdock was hilariously bad", I guess we'll agree to disagree there - his performance wasn't the problem for me - the film just wasn't very good.

I believe in ya Ben!!

I think because of how Daredevil turned out, he is really going to give this his all. He'll want to knock it out of the park just to be able to show us he can do it. He knows how much the character means to a lot of us and he is a HUGE Batman fan himself. Plus anyone would be nervous about taking on the role after Bale. I just hope I can get to see some of the filming here. Plan to take a day or two off work just to go downtown for it. Hope I see a batsuit!

I can see why he was reluctant...all the vitriol on the internet proved him right (as well as rendering the clip from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back hilariously prescient). I have full faith that I will eventually be convinced by Affleck's portrayal of Batman and I'm eagerly awaiting some indication of what the Batsuit and the Batmobile (please let there be a Batmobile in this film) will look like. I must admit though that while watching Escape Plan, I found myself really wanting to see Jim

I must admit though that while watching Escape Plan, I found myself really wanting to see Jim Caviezel as Batman, even though he was a villain in that film (and a terrific one, I might add). Maybe it's because he looks a good deal like Christian Bale and so I subconsciously think he'd be a good Batman.

What Lindelof-written pilot is Affleck referring to? Is it The Leftovers for HBO?

The best answer an actor can give I think for who's your favorite Batman and to get a positive rise out of the fanboy crowd is KEVIN CONROY. Not that it is necessarily correct, I just think it is the unexpected answer that fanboys would appreciate hearing.
