Ben Affleck to direct solo Batman movie, plus other DCCU rumors

06.24.2015

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Zack Snyder Henry Cavill Ben Affleck Gal Gadot Banner

Remember when Ben Affleck was rumored to be up for THE JUSTICE LEAGUE directing gig, back when it was only going to be one film? That didn't pan out, obviously, but Affleck may still end up behind the camera for a DC comics movie.

Latino-Review has heard Ben Affleck is set to direct the planned solo Batman flick, from a script by BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE screenwriter and Affleck's ARGO scribe Chris Terrio, who is also writing the screenplays for both of Zack Snyder's THE JUSTICE LEAGUE movies. LR also says the project is aiming for a November 2018 release.

The site goes on to claim the full THE JUSTICE LEAGUE cast will be coming to this year's San Diego Comic-Con, which will include Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. That kind of gels with yesterday's report from Collider on how the reboot may focus on more than one Green Lantern, however there's no word from LR about Guy Gardner also possibly being in the mix.

SDCC 2015 is only a few weeks away, so if Latino-Review's scoop is true, DC and Warner Bros. must have already decided who is playing Hal Jordan and John Stewart, right? Well, LR also believes that Chris Pine is not in negotiations to play Wonder Woman's love interest Steve Trevor as previously reported, and is actually in the running to play Jordan. Pine was rumored to be up for the Hal Jordan role and, as the site puts it, WB is "Kahn-ing us J.J. Abrams style" with the Steve Trevor rumors. As for John Stewart, LR speculates that Tyrese Gibson may end up landing the role. Do you think there's any truth to these latest DCCU rumors?

DC's BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens on March 25, 2016.

Love or hate Affleck as an actor, or even as this Batman, but the man is a stellar director. In fact with this news DCCU has its best director slated for any of its movies. It would also get my interest in further Batman movies going full steam. I might get flack for this but I would love to actually see film adaptation of the Arkham games. But anything DKR on film will be in good hands with Affleck behind the camera.

Gibson has been campaigning for the role....

But he's a shit actor, so I hope the people putting this together aren't stupid enough to give it to him.

Would love too to hear some updates on Shazam. I fucking love the Big Red Cheese. As far as John Stewart goes, I'd give to role to Common before Tyrese.. Common has impressed the shit out of me on Hell On Wheels. Would love to see Guy Gardener in there. Always thought the dude that played Stiffler in American Pie would be perfect for the role. That character is kinda how I've always seen Guy. And please give us Batman one punching Guy. One of the funniest moments in Justice League

Well I think Affleck directing a solo Batman movie is a no-brainer. Safe to assume that was part of what got him the role in the first place. The guy has made a believer out of me over the last 10 years of his career and I think (even if the movie blows) this will as close to the comic book Batman as we have seen in live action. Also the idea of the DKR Batman on the big screen is just too much for this fan boy to not geekgasim at. Chris Pine as Hal Jordan? Perfect casting. Hope it's all

As a director, he'd be a good fit

the guy can direct an action sequence, and he hasn't directed a bad movie yet (having the ARGO scriptwriter is a bonus). But I can imagine juggling a physically demanding role like Batman, plus directing, would be a hell of a strain.

Totally down with Affleck directing a solo Batman film. The man can direct, as we saw with Argo. I'm curious to see what WB/DC will showcase at this year's SDCC.

This all sounds great and that it could be true, but then you read it's from Latino Review so probably 85% of it is bullshit. Here's the truth of it all - WB/DC will showcase all the superheroes currently cast and will make an announcement about Green Lantern. Most likely nothing about who is being cast, just some title cards and that Hal and John will both be featured in the movie.

Sounds great. Somehow I have hope the solo Batman film would be as entertaining and intense as Argo. If it can be somewhat along that line, I'm happy.

It would only make sense for Affleck to direct himself in his own solo Batman movie. And after directing three great films, I can't wait to see what he would bring to a comic book character like Batman and to a city setting like Gotham.

As for Pine finally being cast as Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern, that would be fantastic. The guy has the right look, dramatic chops, and charisma to pull the roll off effortlessly. So I do hope after all of these rumors, he finally lands the role.

The only negative is Tyrese possibly landing the John Stewart role. The guy is annoying as hell and there are much better, versatile actors for the role.

I actually really like the idea of Affleck directing Batman. He's had one of the most successful transitions from actor to director, and he really does put his heart into the films he makes. It also means we will likely get a shift from the Snyder-tone of this universe, with less reliance on CGI. Affleck tends to bring a fresh, grounded perspective to his films, where you really feel like you are the experiencing the storyline with the characters.
