Ben Stiller talks cast and setting for Zoolander 2

01.14.2011

ZOOLANDER is one of the only comedies I've ever seen that I actually thought would be ripe for an sequel, and how it's taken ten years for one to finally get developed is a great mystery to me.

But whatever the obstacle, the film is allegedly happening, and speaking to Empire, Ben Stiller was able to give a few details about the project which unfortunately doesn't yet have a start or release date.

"Where it’s at is we've completed the script, Justin Theroux and I, and handed it into the studio. “Now the studio has the script and we’re at that point where we’re waiting to see what they want to do. It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s basically Derek and Hansel ten years later – though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them. Will Ferrell is written into the script and he’s expressed interest in doing it. I think Mugatu is an integral part of the Zoolander story, so yes, he features in a big way.”

No word about the rumored role for Jonah Hill, but it's nice to hear that Ferrell's Mugatu has a big role in the film. If I had to guess, in the tradition of many other sequels, I predict he'll team up with Derek and Hansel to fight some greater threat this time around, which will likely be some evil European fashion mogul. You know, I could actually see Russell Brand in a movie like this. Just saying...

Extra Tidbit: Fun fact: I once donned women's leather pants and busted out my best Blue Steel to play Derek in a high school spirit week skit. Fortunately no pictures of the event exist.

Zoolander and Anchorman seem like the perfect comedies to have sequels. Let's hope Anchorman doesn't take until 2014/2015. I hope Katinka is back for Zoolander 2.

No surprise

Ben Stiller was in twenty-three movies after Zoolander and he's also done a lot of TV and wrote and directed Tropic Thunder.

Europe?

I'm still totally down with a Zoolander sequel, but it seems like most part twos that take place in Europe usually tend to suck...

sounds great! If it's as funny or better than the first I will be very happy, cause I think it's one of the funniest film he's done!

Drake Sather

Total bummer that he won't be around to contribute to this but I trust Stiller. Cannot waiting for this movie. The deleted scenes from the first one with Ferrell dressed as a little kid is insanely funny.

Zoolander was hilarious.

Great to see the sequel still running for the studios and not burning in development hell. When I was reading this synopsis i immediatley thought mugatu is deffinatley gonna be helping hansel and derek lol and then paul said the saem thing later in the article..crazy. anyway this sounds like it will be just as funny if not more funny than the first. i have faith in this project.

Damn Tassi, Brand is a GREAT fit for this. I know his kind of obnoxious brand of comedy isn't for everybody, but seriously he'd be a perfect fit for like a brash, European fashion mogul type villain. He already looks and talks the part, and hearing him and Stiller would actually be a great comedic pairing imo with their different styles.

Either way, I'm psyched for Zoolander 2.

Jonah Hill as the villain or a new designer or model would be hilarious! I believe it took this long to make because the co-writer w/ Stiller of the original died and Stiller said it didn't feel right to do a sequel w/out him.

I'd honestly love Russell Brand if he was some type of villain or the 'new' face of fashion. Either way, I'm just glad that Mugatu is going to play a big role.

I have to disagree with the poster below me, Russell Brand would be basically a perfect fit for this. Anyway, I'm definitely up for some more Zoolander, that movie is still funny today.

Zoolander

Please Please No Russel Brand, to me, he really is the unfunniest man who is considered funny. I am totally Hip to Zoolander 2 and I will see it in the theaters, but if Russel Brand is in it, I see him as a virus and I probably won't see it then.

I hated the man, I really did but after seeing him in forgetting Sarah Marshall I have to give him a chance in whatever he's in. His character turned out to be one of the best in that film.

Saying that though I can very much understand why people do dislike him. He just won me over in the film.

On that note, I think he'd fit quite well into this film.
