Benedict Cumberbatch hints at what Smaug's introduction will look like in The Hobbit

Between SHERLOCK and STAR TREK 2, it is easy to forget that Benedict Cumberbatch is also going to be in THE HOBBIT films. With THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY opening in just a few months, the questions are beginning to flow as to when Cumberbatch will make his first appearance as Smaug the dragon.

Cumberbatch was asked that question recently and he shared the following hint: "I think my eye might open at the end of the first film and then you'll get the rest of me in the second."

That seems close to how Gollum was introduced in THE LORD OF THE RINGS via a quick glimpse followed by the full reveal in THE TWO TOWERS. But, will this be altered at all by the addition of the third HOBBIT film? My impression was that Peter Jackson would be adding material after THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN, but it never occurred to me that he may re-edit the other films as well.

For now, we can expect to catch that glimpse at the end of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY when it opens on December 14th and the full reveal in December 2013.

Sherlock Smaug

Bilbo and co. don't reach Smaug until the final chapters. This could mean that the the first two films would be basically the contents of the book, with the third one coming from the appendices and bridging The Hobbit and Lotr. I kind of like the idea of that, keeping the story just as it was. And then going back in the third film to show what went on behind the scenes.
Of course that first glimpse of Smaug could pop up when stories about him are being told, way before they reach him.

Warning: Potential Spoilers

Didn't realize Benedict was Smaug. Now even more excited about it. What I estimate this means is that we'll either get Smaug at the end of the second movie and they will save the five army war for the entire third or we will get both Smaug and the war in the third film. Either way, I am very much looking forward to this new trilogy, though I do think three movies is a bit excessive.

I think we may be thinking about this in the wrong way. I am not sure they are going to be really changing what they already shot that much. But adding in more story to complete a third movie. And are we still sure that the order will be the same. Maybe the There and Back Again story line will finish up the trilogy, or end in the last movie with a bit of tie in between Hobbit and LOTR. Never expect PJ to do the obvious thing.
