Benedict Cumberbatch in final talks to play Doctor Strange

10.27.2014

After months of back and forth, denials and rumors, we now have confirmation that Marvel has found their lead for DOCTOR STRANGE. Deadline is reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch is in final negotiations to play the Sorceror Supreme for director Scott Derrickson.

Despite playing coy back at San Diego Comic Con, Cumberbatch was one of the actors consistently on Marvel's shortlist that also included Jared Leto and Tom Hardy. Recently, Ryan Gosling met with the studio about DOCTOR STRANGE. Joaquin Phoenix was named as a finalist back during SDCC and those talks fell apart at the last minute. Cumberbatch apparently has final found a common ground for what is sure to be a long term contract.

Kevin Feige has long said that DOCTOR STRANGE is a top priority and with filming ready to roll next year, a lead needed to be in place. Rumors have been circulating that DOCTOR STRANGE will lead off the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which may see characters like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America take a backseat to new characters or reduced appearances on screen. If these final talks get final confirmation then Benedict Cumberbatch will become one of the biggest gets for Marvel in a while.

Cumberbatch has already put his stamp on J.J. Abrams' rebooted STAR TREK universe, can he do the same for Marvel? Fans seem to agree he is a good choice for the movie. We will all find out when DOCTOR STRANGE hits theaters on July 8, 2016.

Will be cool to see him play a fantasy hero - he has a slightly otherworldly look to him sometimes that could play in his favour here. Worst case scenario, he plays it like Sherlock with magic powers - still wouldn't be awful.
Look forward to seeing what they come up with for this.

Unpopular opinion it may be but I think he overacts and his constant growly mouth, intense stare acting will be a turn off for me.

Hmm, but his constant growly mouth and intense stare acting is a huge turn on for your mom... Bazinga! I actually got nothing... but you probably just don't like him because you haven't seen him in more than a tv show and star trek.

Go see Imitation Game. That movie has proven to a lot of Cumberbatch haters that he is an amazing actor, with a wide range and he could win an oscar for that role.

The funny this is, it's his growly mouth and intense stare that make him perfect for Doctor Strange.

How this story has any down votes at all is truly beyond me.

Ethan Hawke would have been my first pick, but even if this isn't my personal dream choice it is simply a very good call.

Mr. Cumberbatch, Your Franchise Awaits....

I always thought that if he was unavailable, that Jack Huston would be a great choice as well, but if this is a done deal, Marvel couldn't have made a better choice. Cumberbatch has the presence and acting chops to carry off the role, and this can be a multifaceted part, alternating between lighter and darker aspects of the character. He the right age to wear the experience and young enough to do the action sequences. Combine that with his Shakespearian chops, and I'd say this is a win win

He's also in talks to play Wolverine after Jackman, Indiana Jones in a Disney's reboot, Khan in Star Trek 3, Darth Vader in a future SW spinoff, Mothra in Godzilla 2, the lead in True Detective season 3, and some guy in the DC universe (a new green lantern maybe). OK, so this guy going to star in every fu.....n' thing!

This is great news!

I'm sure some of the other candidates could have done a fine job in the role, but Cumberbitch is perfect for this character. He is incredibly charismatic, and can play mysterious as well as authoritative better than most. Marvel needs someone of his talent especially if Robert Downy jr and Chris Evans don't have much left in the tank.

Not a good choice

Love Cumberbatch, but he has underwhelmed in all of his movies. I would have picked Ethan Hawke or Viggo Mortenson (not sure why his name wasn't thrown around more). Idris Elba as an inspired choice. Gosling or Keanu would have been interesting.

Not my first choice

Ironically, because he was a too obvious choice, too 'in the book', especially coming from Marvel...
HO, I like him and I think he will do fine as, I think, his 'over-acting' (as some-one did say quite accurately) will ad to the over-the-top way Doc Strange talks !
Anyway, anything is better than Phoenix (for THIS part !)

I like his acting, but not sure I'd like him for this part. Marvel's plan for getting someone to take the lead from RDJ, an actor who's recently played Sherlock Holmes, is to get the other guy known for playing Sherlock Holmes? I really liked the idea of Ethan Hawke, to bad that didn't happen.

Hell yeah!!!!

I've been rooting for him since day one. I still think it would have been cool to pick a wild card like Pedro Pascal, but I really like Benedict's acting, and think he could be the guy to anchor the franchise around. He's also young enough that he could be around for quite a long time (even if he only appears every two or three years).

If he'd had a better written part, I think his Kahn would have been trans-formative. As it was, I thought he did a great job with mediocre material

Yes!

Marvel was smart to go with Cumberbatch. He has proven that he will give himself to each and every role he takes on. When it comes to these Marvel characters, an actor is making a huge commitment for the future. You have to make sure you can count on the person that you cast. They had to be a little worried that Phoenix would have retired at some point to release a rap album or something. Anyway, I'm glad that BC will be taking this on b/c he has a way of keeping the tone serious while still

I'm sure he'll be fine, but I'm always excited for Marvel casting someone totally unexpected, like Chris Pratt for Star-Lord, Mark Ruffalo as the new Hulk, James Spader for Ultron, even Chris Hemsworth was kind of a surprising pick for Thor at the time. This just seems kinda by-the-books. Would have rather seen someone I would never have guessed!

The perfect choice for the character. So much better than Joaquin Phoenix, Ewan McGregor or Depp (for this part). People whining about it being too obvious or not edgy enough sound like spoiled children. So you got someone that is widely considered one of the world's better classically trained actors; someone that can bring multiple layers to what has always been a 2nd or even 3rd tier Marvel character and you're mad because it didn't surprise you enough? For some of us it's enough that Marvel

He'll be good in the role, but I have to say the choice seems a little un-inspired and the news is less than exciting. Cumberbatch's name is tossed around for everything these days, seems like Marvel just jumped on the band wagon and went after him too. Which is a shame because they've done a great job at getting really interesting actors/actresses for their roles.

Yes Please!

This is the best casting since RDJ as Iron Man. Cumberbatch has that Dr. Strange look, that voice and man can he act! (watch The Imitation Game, the guy better win some awards!)

He is a rare breed of actor. A chameleon that doesn't need to change shape or colors but still finds a way to blend into his characters and make them all different.

I'm saying that he "suddenly" became a "good" actor as soon as he popped up in 'Sherlock' despite the fact that he'd been giving the very same - terrible - (over-)acting performances on TV for years. Once he entered the geek ionosphere, he was suddenly a brilliant actor.

No. He never was. He never will be. His mother wasn't much of an actress in her time, either.

Talk about a no-brainer

Cumberbatch was a no-brainer for the role: he's a great actor, he does mysterious and powerful well (see SHERLOCK), and he's hotter than Hades these days.

If they were looking for someone to be the linchpin for the next Marvel phase (and compete with RDJ for screen charisma), he's an incredible choice.

Another great casting choice by Marvel. He's a brilliant actor who will whole heartedly own the character and make it his. He's a fine choice and actor to carry the torch from Downey's Stark and to really bring Marvel to the next level of cinematic greatness and success.

But in all honesty, I was really warming up to the idea of Keanu Reeves getting the role. Especially after seeing him in John Wick.

Marvel had me on pins and needles only to disappoint. This was the one actor who was wrong for this role. First DC with the disappointing Mamoa as Aquaman news and now this. My favorite movie genre being destroyed one after the other. Shame on Marvel for getting this one wrong
