Benedict Cumberbatch promises that Earth will fall on this poster for Star Trek Into Darkness

Apr. 8, 2013by: Niki Stephens

How would you like to start your morning with a new poster from STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS? Don't mind if I do.

Benedict Cumberbatch is the star of this particular poster, as if that's any surprise. Cumberbatch is obviously the centerpiece of the film as he so easily steals the show in the trailers we've seen thus far. It's that voice, that presence...everything! When it comes to the Khan vs. Mitchell debate, I think it's close enough that we should probably just wait until the plot unfolds in the flick. I've already given my reasons why I think he's one or the other, and there's not much more I can elaborate on.

I'm digging the poster with the accompanying tagline: "Earth will fall." Nice and menacing, just like Cumberbatch. I know the ladies will enjoy this one as well. Check it out below.

Synopsis: When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

?

I ask only because I'm interested in understanding: Why are people so pissed at this Star Trek franchise?

I thought the first one was great, but I will admit I am not a Trek purist. I was too young to get into the original though I liked Next Generation a lot in middle and high school.

A lot of people (like myself) are not a fan of the way Abrams dumbed down Trek for a more mainstream audience. Star Trek is a popular name among pop culture but the show isn't as much. It is more based on if this technology was realistic and the consequences of it, rather than just big explosions. The original series is a philosophical show with some fights here and there but it had a greater message to it. Abrams has taken that away strictly for money.

Because Trekkies - much like the followers of any underground phenomenon - can't stand when the thing they follow becomes popular. It's "I liked it BEFORE it was cool" syndrome.

Yeah just like people get pissed off when transformers is ruined and teenage mutant ninja turtles is ruined, except assholes dont make fun of people who dont like transformers, but they do for trek. if someone says the new jj trek sucks, they are thumbs downed and told they are trekkies who cant handle it. when bay destroys TMNT and everyone bitches about it, everyone just agrees. thus the circle of bullshit continues.

Got it. It is sort of a purist/casual fan dichotomy. Nothing wrong with that. As I said, I liked the reboot a lot. I thought it did a tremendous job of rebooting the characters for a modern audience. But if one of the criticisms is that the film sort of rushed from one action sequence to another without the larger philisophical context that defined the shows, then I can see the validity in that. My only rebuttal would be that it was the 1st film, and as such was responsible for telling a story

My only rebuttal would be that it was the 1st film, and as such was responsible for telling a story while trying to cram in a boatload of introductory exposition. Perhaps in the future the films will move towards a point of view more in keeping with the die-hard fans' perspective.

Actually think of it like this, the movie as a just a regular movie isnt too bad! but as a representation of what trek is supposed to be - it sucks the big one. for me, there are enough of these regular action/scivi movies that we dont need to ruin trek to make one. trek is about exploring humanity, our place in the galaxy while providing social commentary and ocasional action etc. the romulans wouldve never acted the way bana's character did - he was more like a klingon - if you say that to

JJ's star trek is the same as Adam West Batman (in terms of how is kind of related, but not really).

I guess its true that super-geniouses can easily become super-villains.

He will be the best villain in a movie since Ledger in Dark Knight. He's going to steal every scene that he is in.
