Benedict Cumberbatch won't appear in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII

04.14.2014

Sorry Cumberbitches, but it looks like your favorite actor won't have a part in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, unless of course Benedict Cumberbatch is pulling a Khan on us. The Iris was live-tweeting Cumberbatch's Q&A at the Oz Comic Con in Sydney over the weekend, and he says he would've liked a role in J.J. Abrams film, but it's just not going to happen.

Although we don't know what changes were made to the script for the upcoming film, there's a chance the part Benedict Cumberbatch may have been up for no longer exists because of the rewrites. I joke Cumberbatch might be lying to us again, however I really don't think he will have a role in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. I'm a little disappointed, but it is what it is, and it's not like Benedict Cumberbatch isn't going to be able to find other awesome projects to work on.

During the Q&A Benedict Cumberbatch also said he'll never play Doctor Who, something many fans of the actor would love to see. Personally, I think Cumberbatch is too big for Dr. Who, and I'm glad he isn't interested in playing him.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII will be in theaters on December 18th, 2015.

Either the original screenplay called for Grand Admiral Thrawn and the rewrites tore him out (which would be a real shame), a competing offer from another big franchise scooped him up (you never know), or the rumors were all bollocks to begin with and now his schedule is just too tied up for it to work post-hoc.

I'll be honest - I'd prefer not to see another intense type character from him. I want to see absolute zanny and stupid. But that's just me.

First off, Cumberbatch is a fantastic actor - one of the best in the biz, but NO ONE IS TOO BIG FOR DOCTOR WHO. Its been around for 50 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No ONE MAN is better than 50 years of scifi!

Sorry, whovian rant.

Not such a bad thing

Like others have mentioned, Benedict Cumberbatch is in danger of becoming typecast. I'd like to see him branch out a bit more. Not that I'm expecting him to suddenly do a rom-com or hook up with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (although that would kick ass), but he is in danger of getting stuck in the same-old when it comes to roles.

As the article mentions, it's not like the guy's hurting for work.

Didn't he also say he wasn't playing Khan?

I'll wait and see if he's really not in this. I sure hope he is in some capacity.

I think it's for the better. When the rumour was first reported on, I mentioned that there might be the danger of Cumberbatch's character in a Star Wars film being merely "'John Harrison' with a lightsaber". Though that sounds awesome, I guess it's better that he not get typecast and pigeonholed. I think he could carry a film franchise as the hero, in a role different from Sherlock.
