Berg talks Hancock 2

08.19.2009

You remember HANCOCK right? The summer blockbuster that made hundreds of millions of dollars that nobody really thought twice about afterwards? Well, since anything that is profitable deserves a sequel, Peter Berg talked to Sci-fi Wire about a possible second go-round, where he says there will most likely be a “third god” thrown into the equation.

But when can we actually expect another film? TBD, says Berg. "They like to fast-track it, but Will's busy, I'm pretty busy…We're excited to do one, but we want the script to be right and the movie to be right. We don't feel a burning imperative to go right back into it." Yeah, I don’t really feel a burning imperative for you to go right back into it either.

HANCOCK is one half of an excellent movie that failed when for unknown reasons, it started to take itself really seriously. Mythos? Gods? Shut up, we just wanted Will Smith as an asshole superhero, how hard is that? If they realize their mistake with the first film, and fix it for the second, I’d be all for it, but otherwise, I couldn’t really care less.

Extra Tidbit: They only exist in pairs! And they can’t be near each other! But they’re in love! And they’re angels! Or aliens! What the hell happened halfway through writing that script?

The first one was like 2 different movies slapped together. Once I got over the shock of the transition the 2nd half wasn't really all that bad.

script

I read the original script... THAT was brilliant. And it didn't have an ounce of buttered up popcorn. Studios fucked it up. It was intended to be a dark and gritty film noir type flick. Deep stuff. I'm pretty sure its still online somewhere if any yous guys fancies a gander.

Am I the only person out there who thought the movie was brilliant? PERIOD? With possibly only a slight miscasting of Jason Bateman (who did fine but was WAY out of his league with Smith and Theron)?

Sequel premise?

I say they throw in the recent economic downswing in this next one...maybe introduce the "gods" and their attempts to assimilate back into everyday society as members of the working middle-class. Hancock 2: Hanjobs

Charlize Theron's character really fucked up the rest of what looked like an original film that toyed with the superhero genre. Like most of you I also think the biggest sin of the movie was taking itself too seriously. A sequel with a bad guy on it will end up a bad imitation of Superman II.

It was like the script was written by two different people who weren't paying attention to what the other was doing. The first half of Hancock was decent, but when it got into Charlize Theron's character, it got really stupid. The idea started out interesting but then turned lame.

I agree Hancock 2 would be terrible unless will smith returned to being an asshole and just stayed like that the whole movie.

Berg should do The Rundown 2!

I always thought that movie should of been a franchise

I like the idea of a prequel instead. But I know the answer: They're Angeliens!

It shouldn't be a sequel, it should be a prequel. Where did they come from, how did they get here, what is Hancock's real name and are they aliens or angels?

The best thing Berg everr did was the opening scene of the Rundown...

Do a whole movie like that!

part of me would rather Berg get around to finally making Lone Survivor, but then I remember he sucks and I hope he never touches it. go right ahead, Peter, make a sequel to a shitty movie, there's nothing to f$%k up there.

Sounds good.

I've always liked Superman 2 for the reason they brought more Supermen to stir up trouble and cause mayhem. I liked Hancock, but his could end up an example of the sequel being (no pun intended) superior.

I can live without a sequel to a very subpar movie that is best left forgotten.
