Beyond the Wall: This Week on Game of Thrones (S3 Episode 3 / April 14, 2013)

Apr. 15, 2013by: J.A. Hamilton

NOTE: Join us every MONDAY as we review the latest episode...

EPISODE 3: Walk of Punishment

THE PLOT : The long summer is at an end, winter truly is coming and with it the cold winds of war as five self proclaimed Kings claim dominance over Westeros, but there can be only one winner when you play the game of thrones.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode). Nothing like starting off the episode with a funeral. The great thing about this series being that since so many people die, a good bit of humor is allowed. The arrow thing is hilarious, simply because so many shows and movies use that flaming arrow tactic and nobody ever misses. Ever. Ive shot a bow before, its hard enough when there isnt wind blowing or a movie target to hit. Rob really tears his uncle a new ass and I loved it, it was also cool seeing The Blackfish. They mention the mountain and it made me wonder, its been awhile since I read this book and I cant for the life of me remember what happens to him. All I do know is that Im cringing at the thought of the Red Wedding.

We dont see much of Tyrion tonight, but hes not exactly overjoyed to be taking Littlefingers position as coin master. I dont blame him. What could be more boring, time consuming and aggravating than chasing gold that isnt yours. He and Bronn are always a fun duo that put a smile on my face, and their gift to Pod is almost as funny as them wanting pointers on how to score free tumbles with the ladies. Mance and Jon get to the Fist of the First men and we get another fun white walker body part design made out of horses. Mance sends Jon and Tormund Giantsbane with a group to the wall, which should be interesting to say the least. Jons playing the game, but sooner or later hell be put to the test. I dont remember all the details, but I remember its good (not that it matters about the details anyway as this show does tend to go its own way to some extent).

Aryas not around for long. They lose Hotpie (if you call that a loss) and head off with the Brotherhood to god knows where. The bit with the Hound looked like it was about to get cool, but they didnt let her talk to him (banging his head against the top of the coach door was good though). Crasters still the oober douchebag we remember, and you can tell no ones impressed that they have to drop in on him againCraster least of all. And Gilly gives birth to a baby boy in front of Sam so you know thats gonna stir up some shit. And then theres Theon, who manages to keep breathing. As hes saved from an ass-raping my fiance yells, Oh man, thats the one person I wanted to see raped. I laughed. Couldnt have said it better myself.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 3's third episode heats up the spoon and gets ready for the needle. The two most important pieces tonight are Dannywho decides to pay a dragon for all the unsullied (Say What Girl?). That dude selling them has quite the mouth on him, I cant wait for Missandei to properly translate now that shes free. That whole line of crosses thing was used in the season finale of SPARTACUS the other night, and it looked just as painful tonight. Last but certainly not least, we have Jamie and Brienne. I loved how Brienne started making fun of Jamie for a changeunbelievably funny. But what happens to them later isnt so amusing. This is where Jamie starts to grow a conscience and become a good guy (in my eyes at least). He saves Brienne from being gang raped, but Jamie Lannister doesnt know when to back off and it costs him a hand (I hated that part of the novel). Awesome ending to an awesome episode. Is it Sunday yet?

SEX/NUDITY: Theon almost gets it in the bum, and Podrick gets a lesson in spear-handling from three beautiful ladies.

VIOLENCE: Horse lovers may not be too happy with the white walkers, and its a rough night for slaves nailed to crosses.

SHARPEST QUIP: There are two, one funny and one epic. Hotpie is babbling about not being anyone important like a lady of Winterhell. Arya: You mean Winterfell. Hotpie: You sure? Arya: Im sure. And then Jorah and Ser Barristan are talking about Rhaegar Targaryen. Jorah: Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, and Rhaegar died.

MOST EPIC SCENE: The great Jamie Lannister has a crisis of conscience and saves Brienne of Tarth from rape and death. Again, Jamies one of my favorites and this is the first step on his road to redemption. Truly epic.

FINAL VERDICT :

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: The relationship between Stannis and Melisandre is looking a little tense.

Ending Song?

I heard the ending was ruined by a random song. The last few lines of dialogue were cut off. i havent seen the episode yet and was curious if anyone else has any comments. I've read the books so i'm not too worried about spoilers.

I didn't get that either, it felt very out of place.

I wouldn't say it ruined it, but it was definitely unexpected. I think it was a version of the song the Winterfell guys were singing in the episode while walking through the woods.

Odd episode,

but in a good way! There was a lot of funny scenes, much more so than usual. Jaime is really growing on me, I am starting to like him. The ending song was the weirdest part. When it played me and my friend looked at each other confused.

Agreed, I thought that came out of nowhere. Didn't really mind it, just wasn't expecting it.

Broad Strokes!

Haven't seen ep3 yet but I have to say if you have not read the books DON'T until the series is over. Its hard not to be disappointed especially as the plot lines get so intricate at how broad they are going with the details. I will not post any spoilers but lets just say the term broad strokes was invented for things like this. Yes this or that event may still happen in some way in some time in the thread but its done by a completely different character in a completely different way, etc.

The real shame I feel is that they are weakening some of the characters with this especially Arya and Sam, they have so much more to them in the books. Oh well here is hoping they can flesh them out a bit and put in more of the plot with the extra seasons.

Don't know what you're talking about. Sure they've eliminated some of the characters from the book and in doing so have had to use other characters to serve their purpose. But in the grand scheme of things they've kept the show pretty loyal to the book. I don't care if a "one-off" character takes the place of another "one-off" characters. And as far as the main characters go, they've only eliminated a lot of the superfluous subplots to allow the main plot lines to progress without

Do you think they could honestly introduce every single character of that book and include every single plot line? People in general would be so confused and tune out of the show. Give your head a shake, don't be such a debbie downer champ.

I love Spartacus too! Hate to see it go, but it was a fucking blast while it lasted.

Jamie's turn from evil was always one of my favorite highlights of the books as far as character arcs go. My skin started to crawl when he said bring the partridge and cleaver. Something told me he wasn't cleaving the bird.

Would have been better if Jamie's screams echoed mid-way through the final credits before settling to a complete silence rather than throwing in a rock version to The Bear and the Maiden Fair. I'm sorry but this isn't True Blood.

Great episode though. Things are definitely picking up.

Love the summation! And I also second what your girlfriend said about Theon. I'm sure he's not done suffering. And, Mr. Rapist, bad choice of words to use with a guy who has just shot you with an Arrow.

On another note, because I'm a nitpicking shit-head, Robb tears his uncle Edmure a new ass, not his cousin. :)

Great episode and good points. There's still some jumping going on, but all in all I can't complain. Good call on the Red Wedding, that's going to be interesting.

Another great episode! To me, this was an episode where they set shit up again, making the next episode even better. Also, I nearly puked when Jamie pulls away and his hand is still, motionless, on the lump of wood. Genuinely freaked me out.

Well done. I'm eager to see how things play out on the wall, with Craster and how Jon Snow fits into it all. I wish Ghost had followed him to Mance's camp, he could use the backup.
