EPISODE 5: Kissed by Fire

THE PLOT : The long summer is at an end, winter truly is coming and with it the cold winds of war as five self proclaimed Kings claim dominance over Westeros, but there can be only one winner when you play the game of thrones.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode). One of the great things about this show is being visually connected/introduced to these characters as they pop up. Sure, you might not remember everyones name, like Baric Dondarrion for example, but youd think of him as the guy with the patch. Reading the books is quite different. Case in point, I dont even remember the fight between him and the Hound, and I sure as hell didnt remember him being brought back to life. Cool as hell fight though, the flaming sword was an especially nice touch. Its heartbreaking seeing Arya ask about bringing her father back to life. If she were smart, shes be hitting the priest up for some sword lessons to pass the time. I know I would.

I spoke too soon when I said they werent showing enough of Jamie and Briennes developing friendship. I was thinking of the bath scene that happened tonight, where Jamie tells her the hard truth about what happened during the war with the Mad King. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau continues to impress and show a great deal of range when given the spotlight. The speech last season where he snaps his cousins neck was phenomenal, and now this, tonight. Way to bring this character to life, brother. He puts his entire soul into Jamie Lannister and I for one thank him for it (oh, and as for the hand operation, DUDE, take the damn milk of the poppy). Tyrion and Granny Tyrell have a fun conversation about the cost of weddings and war. I dont think Ive ever seen Tyrion at a loss for words, or outplayed by them. Grannys got some major game.

We havent really seen much of Stannis and Melisandre, but tonight we get a peek at Stannis home life and wellI can see why the man spends so much time at sea. First red flag: Stannis: Baby, I was unfaithful and stuff Selyse: Its cool, I wept tears of joy when I heard the news. FYI, dont try that shit at home fellas as I somehow doubt itll have the same effect. Red flag 2: This crazy bitch took a page out of The Governors playbook and decided it was a good idea to keep her dead babies in mason jars filled with waterby the fireplace in the living room. And you locked Davos up? Speaking of Davos, I love the Onion Knight, he was one of my favorite second tier characters in the books. Its downright adorable that Stannis daughter is trying to teach the guy how to read. I dont remember if he keeps the kid locked away from the world or not, but it feels that way, which is sad.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 3's fifth episode is yet another plot thickener, which isnt a bad thing I assure you. Jon Snow didnt shine quite as bright tonight as Id hoped (or as the trailer implied. Bastards), but he did get his cherry popped so all in all it was a good night for him. Daenerys keeps getting more and more respect from her Unsullied (the Grey Worm bit was moving), but its a little disturbing to hear Sir Barristan talk about what might have to happen when they get home. And poor Robb. That mofo couldnt catch a break with both hands. The Sansa plot is brewing nicely, and the final scene with Tywin putting Tyrion and Cercei (her especially) in their place was marvellous. Hes definitely the guy you love to hate. Another great episode. But damn, are we half-done already?

SEX/NUDITY: : Jon and Ygritte get it on in a cave. And for the ladies, we got some dude on dude action between Loras and the guy sent by Littlefinger to spy on him. Good times.

VIOLENCE: The Hound nearly cleaves Berric Dandarrion in half, and Robb beheads one of his lords for treason (much like Ned did in season one) after he kills the Lannister kids they were holding hostage.

SHARPEST QUIP: Jon Snow makes me proud when standing up to the Mances Warg when he calls him a liar. Jon: What happens to your eagle after I kill you? Does he drift away like a kite with his strings cut, or does he just flop dead to the ground.

MOST EPIC SCENE: As a diehard Jamie Lannister fan, I have to go with the hot tub speech.

FINAL VERDICT :

Poor Sansa, that kid has no idea how many people are conspiring with her, for her and against her.

Tidbit: I'm sure they sacked the city they left, but that food wouldn't have lasted them very long. Maybe they eat sand. That would be convenient at least. Awesome episode.

Show's fantastic.

Am I the only one liking the casting of Jon Snow less & less...?

I know what you mean, I've been waiting for him to blow up, but that day just keeps not happening. And it's a shame too, he's one of the best characters in the books.

There isn't a dull storyline at all this season, which makes sense as we're midway through the books so that alone would imply we're nearing or at a climax of sorts. Robb can't catch a break, but he's also a bit of an idiot. I get he's trying to be "noble" but so was his dad and look where that got him. I couldn't help but think he could've thrown that guy in the dungeon until after the war, like they told him to, and THEN execute him when he was no longer needed. Nope, guess that's too

Nope, guess that's too sneaky for poor ol Robb.

Awesome episode

I agree Jaime's soul bearing scene was pretty epic. Having read the books, I was waiting for it and it didn't disappoint. There is only one thing I am waiting for now: The Red Wedding.

Oh no. RW is the one thing I'm dreading this season. While it will make for great television, it will break my heart.

TIDBIT: Didn't they sack Astapor before they left for Yunkai? I was under the impression they took provisions before their trip.

tidbit: Well there was a lot of BBQ slaver meat last week.

Phenomenal episode. Arya's storyline alone would be the best show on TV. Particularly interesting to me was what we're finding out about how the world views (and will view) Danaerys. To her Dothraki followers she's the 'mother of dragons'...a spiritual prophet of sorts. To Jorah Mormont she's a cause to believe in (perhaps more.) To the Unsullied she's the great emancipator...Abe Lincoln with fire-breathing pets. But the subtext

To the Unsullied she's the great emancipator...Abe Lincoln with fire-breathing pets. But the subtext of Jamie's thing about why he's the 'Kingslayer' tells us that the people of Westeros may not give her such a chance to prove her benevolence. When she appears...she'll be the last descendant of the Mad King, a member of this family that for generations ruled, often brutally, only because of the monsters who were loyal to them. Something that might cause the Starks, Lannisters, Barratheons to set aside all their BS and resist. So while she seems unstoppable in Essos right now, I gotta think she might be biting off more than she can chew if she wants the Iron Throne.

It took some time but they are really getting the character development going now. I like the others cannot believe the season is half over already. I like that Rob is developing a new stratedgy to take on the Lannisters, next week is going to be interesting.

A round of applause goes to this episode, and especially to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who plays Jamie Lannister magnificently. Its a damn shame we're already half way through, but this season has been incredibly well done so far.

I've been looking forward to The Lightning Lord and The Hound's Trial since I finished SoS between season 1 and 2, I was not disappointed. I like how the show reminds us that they can do action with the best while still be all about character development and plot. How this show does not win ALL the emmy's while shows like Big Bang Theory (while a different category, sure) somehow dominate.
