Beyond the Wall: This Week on Game of Thrones (S3 Episode 9/ June 2, 2013)

Jun. 3, 2013by:

NOTE: Join us every MONDAY as we review the latest episode...

EPISODE 9: Rains of Castamere

THE PLOT : The long summer is at an end, winter truly is coming and with it the cold winds of war as five self proclaimed Kings claim dominance over Westeros, but there can be only one winner when you play the game of thrones.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode). One thing Martins not afraid to do with this series is take sharp turns, turns that end up bloody. None more so than the infamous Red Wedding. Having read the books Ive been dreading it all season, watching them give Robb extra things to do to build his character and thus, build the drama, made me wince every time. Tonights aside between Robb and Talisa, discussing the baby, is a perfect example of thismy entire body squirmed inside my head. As far as the scene itself goes, it was beautifully done, from the small nuances and looks between characters, to the brutality and tension that builds until the last man (and woman) falls. It was beyond emotional, a definite blindside to anyone unfamiliar with the books, but a damn fine piece of television.

Daenerys was around for a little, and though her screen time was short, the battle between Daario, Jorah, Grey Worm and the Yunkai guards was also well done. Grey worms battle prowess was especially impressive to behold. This show is famous for its tell rather than show tactics, but for the most part Im cool with that as we dont need to see every battle in its entirety. Why they bothered showing Sam and Gilly at all is beyond me. I laughed when she called him a wizard, but that was it. I also have no idea how that damn babys able to withstand the freezing cold. Incest must boost your immunities.

Arya and the Hound are a blast to watch. The Hounds definitely one of my favorite secondary characters to begin with, but Arya stands up to him like a champ. Threats (the promise of a sword through the eye), and pretty much calling him a bitch when it comes to fire. It was all gold. The look on her face when she realizes everythings gone to shit at the Twins is downright heartbreaking. And when they kill the direwolf, and you see his head under the cage door, its almost too hard to watch. I sincerely hope they dont do in the show, what they do in the book when it comes to the direwolf and Robbs bodiesI guess well find out next week.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 3's ninth episode is as emotionally crippling to watch as Ned Stark getting put to the sword. To my delight, we get some action on the Bran and Rickon frontFINALLY! Yes, it starts out as boring filler, but picks up when it crosses over in Jon Snows storyline. Jon makes his stand tonight and its marvellous watching him gut those fools, but even better is Bran letting loose on the warg front and mind controlling the direwolves to help a brother out. Yes, it would have been ten times cooler to have Jon actually realize they were there, take out all the wildlings, and score a much needed win for team Stark (got knows they could use it). No such luck. Jon takes off, and Brans group breaks up. Weve covered a lot of ground so far this season, and as much as Im pumped for the finale, Im equally sad for the year long wait.

SEX/NUDITY: : Edmure thinks hes getting some ass. Hes dead wrong.

VIOLENCE: The Red Wedding is a bloodbath of treachery and death. We get some fighting on the Daenerys front, and Jons alliance with the wildlings comes to a bloody end.

SHARPEST QUIP: Walder Frey has no shame, because he knows how the night will end. His dogging of Talisa is terrible, but entertaining. I can always see whats going on underneath a dress, been at this a long time. I bet when you take that dress off everything stays right where it is. Your king says he betrayed me for love, I say he betrayed me for firm tits and a tight fit.

MOST EPIC SCENE: The final bout with Robb and Catelyn as the Red Wedding comes to a close is a masterpiece. It doesnt get much more epic than that.

FINAL VERDICT :

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: House Stark just cant catch a break.

Ummmm...very few shows have ever left me sitting in the dark staring at credits at a loss for words...I have not read the books but I do hope the Starks get a win at SOME point, these L's are just stacking up.

In Stannis we must trust. True heir to the throne! Dear God this show gets me way too emotionally invested, and I love every second of it.

I never read the books, but since I was familiar with the song, Rains of Castamere, I put my hands in my face, knowing what was to come. Boy did they deliver

There has never been a scene that has ever left me as breathless as the Red Wedding did. I knew it was coming but the seeing it all was literally jaw-dropping. I'm going to be in such a funk for the next few days.

This show, easily, has the best acting I have ever seen on any television show. Seeing Cat beg for her son's life only to be toyed with was so emotionally draining that my heart almost couldn't bare watching any longer. I haven't read the book, but I knew what the Red Wedding was, but I forgot so when I saw last night's episode, I was taken completely off guard. My god, this show only continues to get better!

Most Unpredictable Show On Television.

I kept hearing mention on these site's of the red wedding. Having not read the books I was very curious about it and when it would happen. I thought it would have something to do with Melisandre, as she is referred to as the red woman often, boy was I dead wrong. Once this episode ended I knew exactly what everyone was talking about. I still can't believe it. I think this was a little more powerful than Ned's death, because Ned was on the executioners block when he was killed. I couldn't

I still can't believe it. I think this was a little more powerful than Ned's death, because Ned was on the executioners block when he was killed. I couldn't believe he was killed but there were only two outcomes for him and it turned out to be the one I didn't think would happen where this came out of nowhere. And with Ned's death you know all bets are off and anything can happen and this still left my jaw on the floor in disbelief. At this rate by the time this show ends we won't have any characters from the first season left.

Damn, I didn't think Robb would win but I def didn't see that shit coming. He was too nice and waaay too trusting though, the second he killed that Lord and half his troops went bye-bye, I knew things wouldn't end well for him. Awesome episode though!

I knew it was coming too, but nothing prepares you for it. It's been awhile since I read the books but I think Edmure gets it first in his bedchamber. We didn't need to see it, as Cat's look of realization when they bar the doors was enough of a wake up call. So much for being noble.

Edmure shows up in the book alive. Not a spoiler I hope. But the last you see of him is the bedding. No death scene.

Fantastic episode, and I too was impressed with Grey Worm's fighting style and hope to see more of the unsullied fighting. Robb's a fool. He's too trusting and too honorable in a game that demands otherwise. It was only a matter of time before he fell, Jaime Lannister was his only bargaining chip. Rough way to go though, I hope Frey gets his in the end.

I'm interested about Osha and Rickon going off to the Umbers. In the books they go their separate way from Bran but it was left unknown where until Martin gives a little breadcrumb to go off in A Dance with Dragons about where they may have ended up.

Yup...

How much smarter was the Robb Stark in the book? At least about the "bring the wife to the wedding" thing. Oh well, would have liked to see Greywind take a few of those jerks out before he went, though.

Robb was doing what he did in order to make amends; leaving their past transgressions behind them. Robb leaving his wife back at Riverrun would have gone against that idea, and could have been viewed as yet another slight. Robb was a different character in the books, there's no mistaking that, but it's not a 'better or worse' situation for me. I enjoy both interpretations, and believe that both work best for their respective mediums.

It is one thing to have spoilers for the current episode you are reviewing

But something else entirely to potentially ruin anything for future episodes. Now I know that something bad, sick or demeaning will happen to Rob and Grey Wind's bodies. Focus on the current episode, no need to bring in future potential plot points, you can do better!

more cheese with your whine? We just witnessed all those characters being killed and you're worried about what may or may not happen to some of the bodies next episode? Here's a hint: if you're rooting for a good guy, chances are: everything bad is going to happen if seasons 1-3 are any indication.

We're given these EXCELLENT reviews every week, and someone has to go mope around about "spoilers." I take it you don't watch the episode previews we get every week either? Cause those reveal a

I'm with ShonK on this one. I appreciate the review, but I do wish it hadn't included anything about what might happen in the next episode based on things that do happen in the books.

The disclaimer reads "The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode". It doesn't say anything about possibly spoiling pieces of future episodes. The problem can be easily solved if you just edit the disclaimer accordingly to better inform

Yea I understand your point but hard to say much of anything was spoiled by the comment of the potential mutilation of their bodies. No plot point is spoiled. What the author of the article speculates on has absolutely no relevance to the plot going forward. All you know is they did something to the bodies in the book. We don't know if this will make it onto the screen though as I said before it is quite irrelevant to the progression of the story. All it would be is a little additional

Anyway I wouldn't complain much about something like this or you might provoke a real jackass to drop a real spoiler. And trust me there are so so many things that a reader of the books to spoil for you that are far worse than what might happen to a couple of corpses.

Ummm, I don't see the issue. Hypothesizing about what could happen, without saying it, doesn't ruin anything. If that's your biggest gripe, you've got bigger problems I assure you.
