Bill Nye & Netflix are teaming up to save the world

09.01.2016

Imagine seeing the silhouette of a man walking out from a plume of smoke with a determined stride, the lapels of his suit blowing in the wind. Then his face emerges, with his steely-eyed determination and magnificent bowtie sending the world a message: I am here to save you all. That man is Bill Nye, and he is here to do just that with his new Netflix show, BILL NYE SAVES THE WORLD.

That’s right, news is The Science Guy is returning to TV with a new Netflix show that will debut in the spring of 2017 (via Collider).  But gone will be the childish whims of this famous 90’s show, BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY, and in its place a talk show that will focus on fighting anti-scientific rhetoric with cold hard facts, experimentation and guest interviews. Basically, Nye is going to bring down the house with his science. Here are his words on the matter:

“Since the start of the Science Guy show, I’ve been on a mission to change the world by getting people everywhere excited about the fundamental ideas in science. Today, I’m excited to be working with Netflix on a new show, where we’ll discuss the complex scientific issues facing us today, with episodes on vaccinations, genetically modified foods and climate change. With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little.”

This show is coming during what some may call a modern scientific enlightenment. Videos are constantly popping up online of people playing around with DIY science experiments, citizens everywhere are fighting to get politicians to pass climate change legislation, and scientists like Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson are practically rock stars. Much like with Tyson’s COSMOS in 2014, Nye’s show looks to educate the modern audience about science. At the very least, Nye's pressence, intellect and charm will make for an immensely entertaining series that will hopefully inspire the future generation of scientists. Welcome back, Mr. Nye, it's time to suit up.

This guy wasn't my thing growing up, I learned science from class, reading, ect., but I understand that lots of people remember him fondly. Every time I hear about him now though he seems to be pushing politically charged science topics, or blaming religion for people not learning science. I wonder if he has the following to make a show a success.

While I look forward to his show, because I grew up watching his previous one, it's sad that it's needed in this day and age. You'd think we'd come so far as a race to not doubt empirical facts, yet here we are.

Science is rarely a study of empirical facts, it's about expanding knowledge through the use of theorizing based on available data; we alter those theories whenever the data proves the theory wrong. Too many people presume facts from science when the reality is more tenuous, it's really just where we are with our understanding today. That's why science is so exciting.

I do agree with your first point. In the advancement of Science and what we know about the World around us, it can sometimes change significantly since Bill's last show.

While his last show was directed more towards kids. I hope this one is a little more adult themed, discussing Space-time, animal/plant species and evolution, because clearly from the comment below, some people need to be educated.

Sad to hear that you think that scientific facts are "left wing propaganda". "Tide comes in, tide goes out. Can't explain it."

People like you should be allowed to opt out of life-saving surgery so that you can be free to pray to whichever idol you trust more than science. You should have to live as if you're Amish.
