Bill Paxton to join Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for four-episode arc

01.13.2014

Well drop your linen and start your grinnin'!

Looks like the legendary Bill Paxton will be lending his "swagger" to Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a four-episode arc as Agent John Garrett, a former colleague of Agent Coulson's who will assist the team in their mission endeavors. "We wanted to bring in a rough-and-tumble former cohort of Agent Coulson with a little bit of attitude and cigar-smoking swagger," says writer/producer Jed Whedon. "When Garrett got his promotion to Level 7, he refused to sit behind a desk and doesn't like the formalities of S.H.I.E.L.D. He's going to help Coulson solve some mysteries and is not afraid to rig an explosive or two."

Paxton's Garrett will "work alongside agents Ward (Brett Dalton) and May (Ming-Na Wen)" and "comes into the fold in a very surprising way.  He is the type who wants to stay out in the field no matter how high-level he gets," says executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen.

Comic fans will know Garrett, created by Frank Miller (SIN CITY) and artist Bill Sienkiewicz, from his appearance in the Elektra: Assassin mini-series where he was injured in an explosion and rebuilt by ExTechOp, eventually allying himself with the crimson-garbed assassin to fight the ninja clan known as The Hand. Could this mean that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be tying in those roots or is it a sign that they're folding in more of the characters from the comics to punch up the series? Fans have been fuming for more comic-related characters, so perhaps this is a step in the right direction. I mean, shit, it's Bill Paxton. I may be tuning in for those episodes...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on Tuesdays at 8 pm. We'll see more cinematic renderings of the agency when CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER hits on April 4, 2014.

I've stuck with the series...because I think it'll come good - this casting and the fact that the series' finale is supposed to tie in with the Winter Soldier is an indication that my belief is justified!

Well, it's a comice based character played by a talented actor

It's a shame you can't say the same about the same about the main cast.

Considering the way the original character looks I would have opted to go with someone like Tom Selleck but we will have to see how much of an upgrade or downgrade this is for this series.

Agents of SHIELD could be grittier than it is. How bad-ass does the TV show seem compared to the PG-13 showhouse adventures? The character John Garrett could easily change the show's tone somewhat. However, a potential viewer has to wonder. Will Marvel Maniacs get the ultra-violent, ultra-cynical Garrett tales that we know? These resemble Miller's Sin City, Dark Knight, Hard-Boiled, and Daredevil. These Garrett tales include disturbing cyberpunk, pornographic, and subversive images. Or, will

Or, will ABC water-down the character? Will we get the name but not the game of Garrett? Will Garrett become like the other SHIELD agents on the show who could be like 24 but are more like The A-Team?
I shall read reviews before watching any Bill Paxton or Stan Lee episodes. I am unconvinced that ABC and Disney have heard the fans. The network and company have not likely adjusted the show's tone, imagery, and plot. They have unlikely made the show more adult, such as a Frank Miller comic is to a standard comic.

"I think this show's a couple of cans short of a six-pack."

Paxton is awesome so they have my attention, Garrett is also a total badass so its nice to see our fellow get a juicy part. With that said i think we need more to change the tide for this show, hopefully they have more aces up their sleeves.

This is getting god-damned rediculous

I'm all good for Paxton (How do I get out of this chicken shit outfit?)
But this character is kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel of the MU. He could definitely play an MU character that's not so obscure.
Hey, I know! Let's use the AFLAC duck to play Howard!

The show as a show isn't all that bad, but as a show about SHIELD (with the word Marvel in the title) it really falls short. If you compare with Arrow (which has introduced a ton of DC characters) then AOS just seems like some regular show about spies. Anyway, they need to step their game - there is still hope.

Absolutely. It's a bore compared to Arrow. I love Paxton, but there's nothing gripping about S.H.E.I.L.D. for me.

After struggling to watch the first couple episodes of this season, my mentality then became "Game over man, GAME OVER!"

It is truly an awful show, nothing short of firing Jed and Co., a complete recast and having Joss step in is going to save it. I think anyway.

Garrett is an Elektra related character and Elektra is, in turn, a Daredevil related character. This is the first indication that Marvel is going to tie in the Daredevil / Luke Cage / Iron Fist / Jessica Drew series with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
