Bioshock creator says they don't need to make a movie

I'm really starting to respect video game companies who are being courted to make their best-selling games into films. They've seen the way that many, many franchises have been tarnished by shit adaptations, and they don't want the same thing to happen to their creations.

First it was Ubisoft earning themselves an unprecedented level of control over the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie, and now it's Bioshock's Ken Levine saying they don't even need a movie at all.

"We got very close to having it get made – we had a deal in place and a director. But for us there’s no burning [desire] to have a movie made just to get it made. For us and for Take-Two, it’s really got to be something that will a) give the fans something that they want, and b) for those who don’t know BioShock, really introduce them to something that is consistent with the game, and is it going to be a good representation of the game. There are differences between games and movies, no doubt, but the movie has to draw from the same DNA in terms of the world and the story beats. But you know, we don’t have a need to get it made."

He's of course speaking of the BIOSHOCK film that was set to go with Gore Verbinski at the helm, but ended up sinking. It was the first video game film I was truly looking forward to, and I'm still a bit bummed it fell apart.

Do video games need to stop acting like having a movie adaptation is some huge and high honor for them? Can they just be satisfied with success in one genre? You don't hear many filmmakers complain that the video game adaptation of their movie was shit.

Extra Tidbit: Mark my words, this will still get made someday. In fact, almost ALL popular games will get movies some day. We're running out of superheroes.

Smart move on their part. Now if we could just get a quality Mass Effect movie going.

Good for Them

There is only one was to make a truly great Bioshock movie, and I do not think the studios would front that much money to do it right. I would just leave very important stuff out...

Good

The Bioshock series stands alone as a unique, memorable, and best of all, interactive story. I couldn't be happier with this decision. I'm sure it would have looked great but no direction could have completely captured the feel of the game without disappointing the fans and bewildering the general public.

i second that: "Good for them"

More people should have pride in creating something from scratch, and not giving it away so someone else who only sees a dollar sign, so they can destroy your hard work, and your credibility. I wish more writers, had this fortitude as these video game company's are showing. We would see less garbage adaptations, and sequels; Leaving nothing but more Quality

Good for them

The videogame industry has been on the rise for a long time now, slowly building itself into something that doesn't need to rely on movie adaptations to snag some extra attention and coin. I agree with Levine; Bioshock can stand on it's own perfectly fine.

All the really big video games now seem like mega-budget action movies to begin with. It would take a budget of $300 million to really make a Halo, Call of Duty, or God of War movie that matched the size and scope of those games.

And the Batman Arkham games deserve to be spoken of in the same breath as the Nolan and Tim Burton movies.

He's got a point. And even more if we see it from a commercial point of view. I think making a Bioshock game would cost less than a making a movie adaptation, and the profits are bigger.
