Black Hole remake

Dec. 1, 2009by: Dave Davis

A childhood memory I can clearly recall is sneaking out of the inert STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE to see Disney's THE BLACK HOLE. As a kid obsessed with STAR WARS, it was infinitely more enjoyable than Kirk's tedium, simply because it had laser gunfights and meteors and a red robot with whirling blades.

Somone at Disney also remembers THE BLACK HOLE, but only for being a property in their catalog that hasn't been remade yet. Problem solved!

A "reinvention" of the 1979 sci-fi flick is in the works, coming from Joseph Kosinski and Sean Bailey (director and producer of TRON: LEGACY) and writer Travis Beacham (CLASH OF THE TITANS). Their update will feature more science about black holes, and less Ernest Borgnine.

The original followed the members of deep space exploration vessel Palomino, who encounter a black hole and a huge spacecraft suspended above it -- the long-lost Cygnus. On board the vessel, they discover the mad doctor Hans Reinhardt and an army of robots, and learn the mystery behind the Cygnus and its crew.

Extra Tidbit: Wonder if the remake's ending will be as loopy?

Love this movie

Maximilian Schell, Robert Forester, Anthony Perkins, Roddy MacDowall, Slim Pickens, and Academy Award Winning Actor Ernest Borgnine. You can't catch lightning in a bottle twice, but it'll be interesting to see them try. The ending freaked me the hell out as a kid, but everything before it was awesome!

As much as I do enjoy the original, it hasn't exactly aged gracefully, and those are the sorts of movies that should be remade, so this is kind of ok by me.

I, for one, can't wait for Tron: Legacy.

A remake would be/could be great, although you could argue Event Horizon already did this. The visual effects of the original are (mostly) still very stylish and creepy. They need to get the ending right this time though!

whaaaatever

I loooved the series when I was a wee lad. But from mental pictures, it was dated before it even came out. Loved the robots! I doubt a remake'll step on any toes.

Hmmmmm...a matter of time.

I am not sure about this. I love the original and have it on DVD! It was the only time Disney was ahead of ILM in terms of effects allegedly.

Just wonder how long before they remake Condorman?!

WOW Condorman. that brings back memories!

I remember this movie being trippy and cool! I hope they keep that same feel! I remember Condorman too! I loved that film, and wished they had made a sequel. A remake of that could be cool as well if done right!

WOAH I haven't seen this in years!

I think the last time I saw this, VHS was still the primary medium. This is one of those exceptions where a remake is very welcome. This movie was CRAZY kooky when I saw it as a kid, but it's definitely dated, so a decent modern update is ok by me.

I remember seeing the original and being blown away by seeing the huge meteor coming towards the people running across the walkway and outside the cutesy robots it was one of my favorite movies as a kid.unfortuantly they'll probably put The Rock in a role since he seems to be Disney's bitch as of late.

Sweetness!!!

Given all the remakes right now and me being a sci-fi junky to begin with I say "go for it"! The obvious reason being the SFX can make this awesome and also I'm a sucker for a small band of people who must overcome incredible odds in the deep realms of space. See, like I said....a sucker!

.....and one more thing!

....yeah I would hope they would keep the Kubrickesque ending. Hell it'll probably lead to a sequel though.

The Black Hole Mall

How about a intergalactic terrorist shopping center? Black Holes are stable; crooks could do business for millions of years.

I saw this as a kid, and then earlier this year. This was a really, really crappy movie. It should stay dead and buried.

I'm in the same boat. I remember loving it way back when it first came out. But rewatching it, it's really clunky.
