Blessed to play Odin?

06.02.2009

It is being reported that British actor Brian Blessed has been cast as Odin in Kenneth Branagh's THOR. If it is true, then it is inspired. Blessed has previously played Caesar Augustus in I CLAUDIUS has appeared in several of Branagh's productions, including HAMLET and AS YOU LIKE IT. As we know, he joins Chris Hemsworth (STAR TREK) as Thor and Tom Hiddlestone as Loki. Samuel L. Jackson will also probably be involved in some capacity as Nick Fury.

I know that the schmoes are way too cool to make some "blessed casting" type pun so I'm not even gonna check back and see if any of you do it. Because you won't. I know you won't. Please don't.
Extra Tidbit: Blessed is a childhood friend of Patrick Stewart's.

We're certainly all entitled to our opinions, but what makes any of this casting unfavorable? Is it that there are no "stars" as of yet? If so, I think that's a bit absurd. I'm sure you can list numerous times when unknown casting has gone south, but it can't be taken on anything other than a case by case basis.

I'm very confident with the casting thus far, and no, it's not entirely blind. We have paid casting producers and our brilliant director Branagh looking for the best actors to

I'm very confident with the casting thus far, and no, it's not entirely blind. We have paid casting producers and our brilliant director Branagh looking for the best actors to fill these iconic roles to bring us a truly faithful and groundbreaking story and film. That they haven't resorted to big names could point to one thing: that the crew is not looking for any one or two people to carry the project simply by their previous work. They're putting faith in the talent of these few individuals and the strength of the story/script to make the film work.

Then again, perhaps I'm misreading these "not thrilled" comments. Sure, if you don't know who these people are then there's not much ground on which to judge their performances. But you have to admit there's another agenda at play here, that Thor's production team is really looking to infuse these characters and the story with true life, avoiding any distracting A-listers.

I'm honestly not familiar with Blessed, I mean I recognized the name but that's about it. However, most of you guys sound pretty stoked about this news, and if Brannagh thinks he's the man for the job, I'm behind him 100%.

I'm surprised we haven't heard a confirmation/denial about that Clifton Collins Jr. rumor though.

To Deja Vu

First, I think this is brilliant casting. Second, Deja Vu, as proven by TDK and IM, for these movies to be great and entertaining, etc., they do not need to be hard R, and I have little doubt that in order to be told properly that this one needs to be. By saying that you want it to be a hard R I feel you are disrepecting those movies (and other very good PG-13 films), as if saying that it can not be good unless it is otherwise, which is dumb, to say the least. Respect what they have already

Respect what they have already done, and don't be a baby when it is PG-13, because I'm already betting money that it will be.

Perfect choice ! He has the looks and is a flawless actor.

And if his voice is perfect as well (project86), deep like Barry White; this makes him spot-on.

Nice! im very happy with every cast announcement so far, and with each one makes me more excited for this film. Kenneth Branagh seems to know what hes doing and that makes me even more happy. This movie is in good hands me thinks!
