Blofeld may return in a James Bond movie thanks to a settled lawsuit

Nov. 15, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Have you noticed that it has been a long time since James Bond had a recurring nemesis? The most famous villain in the 007 franchise has always been Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the Nehru-jacketed bad guy played by multiple actors across several films. Back when Bond battled Blofeld and the evil organization known as SPECTRE, the movies took on a superhero quality as there was a constant face to go with the threats.

Well, for a long time Bond has faced different baddies in every film. Part of this was due to a 50 year lawsuit between MGM and Danjaq LLC due to legal custody of characters and plot elements in Ian Fleming's THUNDERBALL.

The dispute dates back to 1959 when McClory met with Ian Fleming, the author who created the famous 007 in a series of spy novels. McClory took credit for proposing to Fleming the idea of a Bond film set in the Bahamas. A writer was hired to create Thunderball, which later also became a Fleming novel.

Blofeld was one of those characters involved in the lawsuit which has now been settled. In return for undisclosed payments to the estate of writer Kevin McClory, MGM and Danjaq LLC now have the contested rights to characters and plot elements. This means Blofeld is back on the table.

In the Daniel Craig era films, QUANTUM has been the new group alluded to in both CASINO ROYALE and QUANTUM OF SOLACE. SKYFALL veered away from that subplot, but maybe the next Sam Mendes films can tackle Bond and MI6 going up against the supergroup headed by a man with a cat in his lap.

Great, now everyone can regurgitate their same, uninspired choices for Lex Luthor casting over & over for Blofeld....

I know there are many who will find it hard to take Blofeld seriously after Dr. Evil, but I wouldn't put it past the filmmakers handling the Bond series to reinvent the character in a compelling way.

I'd love to see a Blofeld-type villain in the future. Not necessarily the character from the older films, but just the idea that there is one major villain pulling the strings behind the other bad guys in each film. I was kind of disapoointed the Quantum idea wasn't continued in Skyfall, but just like Goldfinger (also the 3rd film in the series) was a one-off story not involving Spectre, I think they can get back into the idea of major criminal/terrorist organization that spans a few films.

I'm all for Bryan Cranston or Billy Zane! Just kidding, but seriously my first choice is Michael Fassbender. No need to retread every detail of the character. I could see Fassbender with a cat pulling off the role

Funny enough a lawsuit was involved that prevented them from showing his face and calling him by name in that movie. That lawsuit eventually led to Never Say Never

What about that secret society of Quantum? It seems to disappear from the movie.

just a thought...

I know he had to retire because of his medical condition, but can anyone else picture Bob Hoskins totally nailing this part?

it would be amazing to see if they could do the whole movie with a 100% character duplicate CGI Donald Pleasence doing Blofeld

Nice!

Ever since Casino Royal and QoS hinted at a larger organization I hoped they would build up a new SPECTRE. Could be a great concept if done right. Basically a handful of powerful men with an army at their full disposal. I have to imagine they would update Blofeld quite a bit, no cat, no gray suit, probably no scar. After the brilliant Dr. Evil parody there is no way they could go back to that. Now the question is who should play Blofeld? I feel that an old Bond would be perfect here. Doesn't

Doesn't matter who, Bronson, Dalton, hell get Sean Connery out of retirement and you've got yourself a packed theater!

The whole Kevin McClory tale is a pretty fascinating one if you're in to Bond movies and is, of course, why Never Say Never Again exists as Thunderball-esque remake produced by McClory. Skyfall seemed to be setting up a return to some of the classic Bond elements, so it would be cool to reintroduce Blofeld.

Blofeld?

personally I really do not care about the character Blofeld, but people are right, QUANTUM need to really be explored deeply... not just "somebody took the money out of my bank account"
the over arching villain could appear in multiple Craig films, but why cant it be somebody completely NEW? This could be possible if THEY STOPPED KILLING THE VILLAIN with each movie.
BATMAN learned this lession now it's time for James Bond to leave the big baddie back each movie and... yeah he needs a GOOD

I never realized Blofeld was in so many Bond films! I assumed it was just two.

Blofeld may be a opportunity to make him awesome. QUESTION!

Blofeld may be Bond's longest on-going villain, but Bond's greatest villain he is not. He's no, Goldfinger, Silva, Dr. No, or Renard.
I do see this another great chance for the new James Bond franchise to continue it's "so far" great blend of classic Bond elements with the new modern Bond.
I have a question for Bond fans. Watching "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (One of my top five Bond films), how was it Bond and Blofeld did not recognize each other when Bond first infiltrates Blofeld's

I have always wondered about that, One Idea that answers that is that when the James Bond actor changes, so does the guy playing the role of James Bond (thing the character of "Dread Pirate Roberts" in Princess Bride was handed from one guy to the next to the next to the next to always keep the character immortal) , therefore George Lazenby has no idea of what his predecessor (Sean Connery) has encountered before he took the persona of "James Bond" .... of course in the next installment, Sean

I think MI6 could, in theory, keep the persona of "James Bond" past the "prime years" of any good spy by having some other man take on the role of James Bond after his predecessor retires.
