Blomkamp's next

Oct. 23, 2009by:

After DISTRICT 9 went on to gross over $100 million, creating a new sci-fi franchise from an original concept, writer/director Neill Blomkamp had his choice of projects to work on next. Would it be a DISTRICT 10? A superhero movie? An adaptation of a once famous TV series? None of the above. Blomkamp has signed a deal to direct, get this, another original concept. Who is this guy and where is he getting all these original ideas from?!

Details on the project are being kept under wraps but Media Rights Capital has committed to finance the untitled sci-fi pic. Blomkamp will be given complete creative control over the film, which is expected to cost more than D-9's $30 million but otherwise modest by sci-fi standards. MRC will shop the project to distributors as production begins. At this point, Peter Jackson is not expected to be involved.

Said Blomkamp of the deal, "MRC is letting me make the film I want to make and that is by far the most important thing here. The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, that comes directly from me." He'll immediately begin writing the project and doing early FX tests. I should note that Blomkamp WILL do a sequel to DISTRICT 9 for Sony but this untitled project will be his next effort and D-10 will have to wait.

Awestruck

Blokamp made D-9 for only $30 million? That is one hell of an accomplishment. i walked out of the theater thinking that they spent at least a good $80 to $100M easy. Why won't they give this guy the reigns to the Halo movie?

Great News

Glad to see that Blomkamp's staying in the sci-fi genre and making another original film. D9 showed that he has a lot of talent, and I'm curious to see what he'll do next.

As for D10, I'm glad that Blomkamp is following the example of Nolan and others by doing something of his own and THEN moving on to the next installment in his franchise.

This is always the way to go when a fantastic director gets his breakout hit.. he'll make a solid sequel, but let him do what he wants first.. and then hit the sequel when he wants to.

It'll clearly make it better for everyone.

YAY!

Didn't love District 9 (though it was very good and I liked it a lot), but Blomkamp is obviously a very talented filmmaker and original concepts are waaay to scarce in HWood. Here's hoping that Copley continues to work with Blomkamp (cause that guy was the shit!).

And serious props to Blomkamp for not just making his next project District 10.

See, this is what I was wanting...

Blomkamp to do back when we formed the District 10 Thread in the forums. A sequel would have been interesting, but I was crossing my figures for another original sci-fi opus. I think I've really fallen in love with Blomkamp. If District 9 is any indication, this guy is a genius.

That's reassuring

I loved District 9, but was hoping he wouldn't follow it with a sequel that soon. I'm glad that he's branching out and showing that he does in fact have more than one original idea. What a guy.

A lot of people are upset with remakes and reboots, I'm tired of super-hero movies. This guy could be the best thing to happen the science fiction since George Lucas and James Cameron back in the '80s. And I love the man's short films, too.

Whether you like D9 or not. This is a nice change from all those friggin' remakes. I say we clone him!

Remake a non-remaker? What exactly are you trying to say, Approverman?! That's madness.

Nice story

It's good to see talented film makers making the movies they want to make, and how they want to make it.
