Bob Hoskins might regret Super Mario Bros just a little bit

06.21.2011by:

There comes a time in an actor's career when he admits that certain project choices may not have been so good.

Yesterday, Logan also known as Wallcrawler to the MFC folk, posted a link to a curious game of 27 questions with Bob Hoskins. The questions seemed fun enough, hell, I figured out that we both want a Dodo as a pet. However there's one thing that Hoskins made completely clear-- the man does not like the fact that he was in SUPER MARIO BROS.

Below is the excerpt:

What is the worst job you've done?

Super Mario Brothers.

What has been your biggest disappointment?

Super Mario Brothers.

If you could edit your past, what would you change?

I wouldn't do Super Mario Brothers.

I don't hate SUPER MARIO BROS. In fact, I have fond memories of seeing it with my Dad. Although, I'm pretty sure my Dad might regret the film as well and he wasn't even in it. It's cheesy as shit but seeing those Goombas make me smile like no other.

NEVER DO THINGS FOR YOUR KIDS

There was a section in Empire where they ask people about the movies and stuff they've been in and they asked him who directed Super Mario Brothers and he said:

"Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton. I will remember those names until the day I die."

He's also pretty incredulous on the behind the scenes features.

"I played hamlet....now I play a man who jumps..."

I always love that bouncing shoes and the small bomb. Roxette's Almost Unreal track was a good track too.

I actually liked it. Saw it in theatres too. I think he'd be more disappointed with Hook, but maybe that's just me.

I loved that movie as a kid. In fact I had the movie poster on my door when I was 5. It was my first movie poster.

Can anybody tell me WHY Luigi doesn't have a moustache? Is it because Leguizamo can't grow one? Nah, I've seen him sporting one before... then why...?

LOL

I had the soundtrack on cassette when I was a boy, I loved that flick. And I completly understand why he's embarrased by it.

Do yourself a favour and watch Mona Lisa and The Long Good Friday - not to mention The Wall and Brasil. WFRR was great - but nowhere near his best!!

Yes and No

It is a piece of shit, however, it's MY piece of shit, you know? I grew up loving that movie. It's a fun throwback to when Hollywood didn't take video game or comic adaptations seriously. Hoskins gives a good performances- tons of fun stuff in the movie- it's just cheesy like gouda.

I remember loving the movie as a kid, but I was 7 when it came out so that's probably why. It's also probably why I'll never be able to out right hate it. Even back then though, I remember being annoyed by Koopa not being a dinosaur, having Daisy instead of Peach, and Yoshi looking so damn weird. I'm sure I could find a lot more wrong with it if I re-watch it again now. It's been awhile.

Hard talking Brooklyn-accent Mario is my favorite version of the character. Bob Hoskins was the voice and personality of Mario long before the high-pitched, cactus-up-the-ass Mario most of the world knows today.

Yeah but

he was also in Son of the Mask. And he says Super Mario B's was worse? He's done some great work though. Seriously, watch The Long Good Friday and Mona Lisa. What a great character actor.

i thought the premise was a unique take on the SMB lore. dinosaurs didn't die out, they were put in a parallel universe of earth where they thrived and kept evolving.

This is kind of old, or at least I think it is. I remember seeing it some time before (or maybe it just felt that way). I remember loving the film as a kid and then growing up and feeling more like it was a throw away film. It's still pretty terrible, but as far as early 90's cheese goes, it's entertaining enough. Still, I kind of wish the movie hadn't tried to make everything seem so grounded and logical. And by this I mean compared to the games.
